These lectures are so amazing. I'm kind of in love with him. I think watching these will be my Christmas tradition every year. These were made before I was born, but I've already learned so much from him! I wish I would have gotten to see them as a kid. My fundamentalist parents would have never allowed it tho. Thank you so much Dr. Sagan the impact you made on humanity will never be forgotten💚
I am a simple person, I see Carl Sagan, I watch the video. But this one, I am going to watch with my 7 year old daughter next. Thank you Professor Sagan and thank you The Royal Institute.
I watched all six lectures about a month ago and I am so glad to see them again now but in higher resolution! Thank you Royal Institution for this gift :))
He's so brilliant, I should already know all of this stuff but he's such a good lecturer and so as I watch I find myself relearning things I've forgotten. I so love the way he takes these highly scientific concepts and even profound questions at the edges of science of the time and communicates them in a way that lay people and even children can get something out of it!
Carl Sagan is an extremely influential figure to me in his role as a philosopher, science fiction writer, and a science communicator. I've never gotten to hear him speak beyond The Pale Blue Dot recording, so this has been a wonderful treat. Thank you so much for posting these lectures. He really has a way of speaking and presenting information that is understandable to anyone, yet gets you to see things in a whole new light. I hope he didn't feel too frazzled by the end, he did great. The top hat was a nice touch not soon too be forgotten ❤
Something a lot of people might not realise now is just how technologically advanced these lectures were. A lot of the stuff he's doing with portable video mixers and computers (especially in the first lecture - less so in this one, where he's using more physical models) wouldn't become commonplace until well into the following decade. Basically, he was using VR while everyone else was barely competent at PowerPoint 1.0.
50:22 it is also astonishing to realise just how dramatically technology has effected our teaching/learning tools since these nonetheless excellent lectures were delivered.
I am of the age to remember Carl Sagan. He had an exceptional way of explaining science, especially to children, and I wonder how many of the audience went into science because they were inspired by Carl. With children in mind, why on earth would you put his lectures behind a pay wall ? I find this extremely disappointing.
Hi there, we are making all the lectures public, one per day, as we agree they should be shared with everyone. The paywall is just a preview for our TH-cam members, who are helping to support our charitable work by subscribing.
3:19 - Hey, look, an American using the long scale (i.e., most Americans would call thousands of millions "billions"), although by 1977 the UK had sort of adopted the American short scale anyway (before 1974, "billion" always meant one million million in the UK, as it still does in most other countries). I guess the short scale makes is 1000 times easier to become a "billionaire". 😉 Edit - And of course he even explains it (at 13:42). It's Carl Sagan, after all.
🟦🔴🟦 THANKS TO THE CARL SAGAN FOR DEMONSTRATING THE IDEA OF EVOLUTION BY ASTONISHING SIMPLE MODELS TO THE AUDIENCE IN HIS CHRISTMAS LECTURE ORGANISED BY ROYAL INSTITUTION . I APPRECIATE EACH AND EVERY CHRISTMAS LECTURE DELIVERED BY ANY PASSIONATE SCIETIST IN THE SAME SENSE AS MICHAEL FARADAY DID IN HIS FRIDAY LECTURES . 🟦🔴🟦
Thank you Royal Institution, for sharing these lectures and in such an excellent video quality.
Indeed, also thanks for sharing them at all !
Some people were just born to be brilliant and inspire people to be inspired by the universe --- Carl Sagan was one of those people
Couldn't agree more
These Lectures are outstanding.

Thank you Prof Carl Sagan ❤
Straight to the point facts no emotions no jokes no embellishing.
He was a treasure indeed…!
Thanks sir
His speeches and lectures still actual today, 40 years later. A man that was able to see into the future. Absolute legend.
Pull neck sweaters were important in 1977… and Carl was the master of them….his lecture style was sublime.

What an amazing presentation! Honestly I can't wait for the results of the expeditions of 1979 and 1981!
I never know what day it is, so I set an alarm on my smartphone, and as soon as we reach those dates it'll beep.

Excellent lessons
To make a rabbit from scratch you must first invent the Universe...
And to make a universe from scratch, you must first invent lettuce.
Er... no, wait... that's not quite how it went, is it?
I don't trust this guy, he sounds like Agent Smith from the Matrix. Just kidding. - A total legend.

This is why im voting for rfk jr.
That rabbit stuff in the beginning is the most cringe I've ever seen Sagan be.
