Echidna in the world of witches is young, when she passed away in the real world she was already much older, as Beatrice herself said, her body swap magic had been a failure and Roswaal only managed to perfect the magic when he understood that it needed to be the body of a son/daughter, which is how he stayed alive all this time. At least that's what I interpreted as her appearance being different in the real world and in the world of witches.

Just to inform you that in the novel, Subaru did have numerous brief encounters with Satella during season 1. This was never shown in the anime, but Subaru would always forget he had encountered her. Just like how when Subaru forgot about his first encounter with Echidna. Also the vail that Satella wears doesn't exist either. The vail is there because Subaru mentality is projecting this vail. Subaru isn't accepted Satella and at the end of the 3rd tea part Subaru was finally able to see her face, because he was able to accepted her in that moment
Some things that weren't thoroughly explained in the anime: - Subaru has indeed now a contract with Beatrice. But sending the Great Rabbit to the shadow realm cost Beatrice almost all of her mana she saved up for the last 400 years. Further, Subaru can only pass low amounts of mana to Beatrice, just enough for her to survive, so they won't be able to cast such a strong spell again. Also, since Subaru's gate is broken, he needs Beatrice to absorb his excess mana, otherwise he will die. So they are in a codependent relationship now. - 13:23 Roswaal explains, that for transcribing your soul you need to have a suitable vessel. So each generation, Roswaal fathered new children and forced his soul unto them, basically killing them. - 29:48 Roswaal actually in his own twisted way wanted to help Subaru. He knew that trying to save everyone will be far more hurtful for Subaru, so he wanted him to reject that path by forcing him to sacrifice people. - 30:06 "If I lost anyone, I would not hesitate to reduce everything to ashes". That translation is not correct, it should rather be "If you lost anyone, I would not hesitate to reduce everything to ashes". What Roswaal actually means, if someone, who Subaru chose to protect, dies, Roswaal would kill the rest, basically forcing Subaru now on the path to save everyone, since that was what Subaru chose. - Another thing not explained: Roswaal only hired Elsa, so Meili was hired by someone else. Also, Elsa and Meili are part of an assassination organization. Their boss is someone they call "Mama" and they are both very scared of her.
Betty is letting Subaru control her own mana channel his own will through her. In the web novel we get to hear Emilia's inner thoughts and she was shocked that Beatrice was allowing Subaru to essentially control her very lifeforce

Subaru has multiple magical abilities. Return by Death, which we mostly understand how it works. His Yin affinity, which means he could cast magic of the Yin type, Shamac and the like. Of couse, that was before his gate broke, which means he lost the capacity for his magic to come out of his body by itself. His Spiritual affinity, which gives him the capacity to interact with spirits at an impressive level for a novice. This one meant that he could serve as vessel for Petelgeuse and that he could've been a very good spirit user, like Julius, if he hadn't made a contract with Beatrice which limits him a lot but gives him back the ability to cast certain YIN spells through her. The Authority of Sloth, Invisible providence, is an invisible arm that can extend like one or 2 meters from his chest. He can only summon one, for very little time and makes him sick everytime he uses it. It has one benefit compared to Petelgeuse, but we've yet to see it in the Anime. The Miasma, a by product of having an authority, is the "Aura" like thing that you mentioned. It attracts Mabeasts, including the three great ones (that we know of) and some people identify it as being related to the Witch cult, but it's most likely residue of the Authorities. It has other effects that we've yet to see in the anime Inmunity to Gluttony's erasure, being that if someone is erased by the Gluttony Name eating, he is not affected by it. There is more to it that we've yet to see too.

15:10 Tomb Echidna's face reveal is a big mystery but there's several hints dropped. It all has to do with how the novels describe the characters features. This being a similar trend with the intentional similarities between Emilia and Minvera being described as having "cute" faces. This Echidna, the Echidna from the Sanctuary is described as having a "Beautiful" face, while the Echidna in the trial is described as having a "cute" face. That's the distinction the anime is trying to show. For whatever reason the trial Echidna looks like a younger, cuter Echidna than the one from the Sanctuary. There's more, Hector the Devil (Mistranslation of warlock) of Melancholy said when meeting Sanctuary Echidna that she "used to be cuter". Basically the implication is that the Echidna Roswaal knew and the Echidna met in the trials are not the same Echidna. If that doesn't make sense it's a good reminder that Echidna was pursuing immortality. Soul replication, soul transcription, and intended to use the Ryuzu clones as vessels but failed due to not being compatible. Compatibility being the issue Roswaal solved later with his own method. So really there's no telling how many versions of Echidna are out there as a result of her experiments and pursuit of immortality.
This is a great moment to mention some trivia and probably forgotten facts. Remember how in their first meeting Beatrice drained Subaru of his mana? That's basically how their contract works. Beatrice due to her unique creation by Echidna is kind of dysfunctional compared to other spirits because she cannot drain mana from the atmosphere and can only draw mana from other people. This is implied to be intended because the purpose of her creation was to be as true to a human child as possible, this means being truly dependent on others for survival. (Beatrice was able to draw mana from the inhabitants of the mansion through her forbidden library. That's how she's lived these past 400 years.) Well because Subaru's gate is collapsed his mana has no way of escaping his body anymore so Beatrice is acting like a pseudo-gate for Subaru by draining mana from him. So with Beatrice acting as Subaru's gate they are truly casting this magic together as two dysfunctional beings made functional together. If you remember from season 1, Julius said that Subaru has a high spirit affinity and would make for a great spirit arts user. So not only does Subaru have a high enough spirit affinity to impress Julius, a renowned spirit knight, but also Beatrice and Subaru share the same magical type affinity of Yin Magic. In fact their synergy together is so perfect there's the implication that Echidna in her schemes may have created Beatrice precisely for Subaru. A cute Beatrice side story that shows her perspective of Subaru's arrival at the mansion in arc 2 shows that when Beatrice healed Subaru's wounds from the bowel hunter she noticed her compatibility with him was off the charts. So of course Betty being Betty she got angry that this random stranger was so compatible and she subsequently punished him with that infinite hallway prank that we see when Subaru first wakes up in the anime. Subaru finding her correct door immediately only made her more mad because that too was a product of their insane compatibility. This is how Subaru was able to sense Beatrice's door. I just really love that the anime as been very subtlety hinting at and building up to this contract between them for a really long time.
To explain what exactly Roswaal is... the bodies are different, but the "person" inside of that body is the same Roswaal. Whenever it was time, Roswaal spirit would take over the next generation of body, and his life would continue. Roswaal ended up being the embodiment of Echidna's grand experiments. And, in fact, that's what the middle initial in Roswaal's name means. The original Roswaal was Roswaal Mathers; the first "copy" was Roswaal A. Mathers; the Roswaal we know is Roswaal L. Mathers. Which means that this Roswaal is the 12th copy of Roswaal Mathers.
15:10 This is supposed to show that the Echidna that Emilia and Subaru had been talking to isn't the same as the Echidna that Roswaal and Betty grew up with. She looks different because she is effectively a different person. However, they are in fact both the Witch of Greed. I don't think it's been explained in the light novel yet, so while we can make theories, most of us are just as confused as you are!

My simple theory is that the dream Echidna is just her soul without any human emotions and the coffin one is her actually body. Meaning, the one Subaru saw is her raw self and the one Ros/Betty remember is her real (and probably nicer) self.

Just to clarify the spell system in the show, the strength of spells starts from the original incantation and increases by adding El , Ul , or Al . For example, fire magic starts with Goa, then goes to El Goa, Ul Goa, and finally, Al Goa. So if you hear some spell start with Al like the Al Shamac Betty just used you can expect to see some crazy OP spell.
funny how shamac is the weakest spell because you can swoosh your sword through it and the smoke is gone, while al shamac is the strongest magic that even roswaal can't do it because of the mana cost. one al shamac, cost 400 years of collecting everyone's mana in roswaal's mansion.
I don't think Puck gave Emilia any false info, but rather, just failed to tell her the truth. Emilia filled in the blanks with her own imagination. In the web novel, Subaru considers asking Ram for help since Puck's been such a failure.
Not even Puck, he just dodged the topic and never taught her about the birds and the bees. It was Annerose who read it from a fairy tale or something like that. So Puck is guilty for letting the misunderstanding go this far and not correcting it despite having a lot of time
OH CRAP I ALMOST FORGOT TO MENTION THIS remember when emilia went insane and roswaal killed garfiel and ram and the rabbits ate roswaal and munched on subaru? we see him coming back to the already insane emilia, just before he dies and the loop resets, we see emilia kissing subaru, that was coz she knew he was gonna die but she still wanted a part of him, SHE WANTED TO GET PREGNANT WITH SUBARU'S DYING BODY ( by kissing since thats how she thought babies were made)
remember watchin this episode expecting something to happen and a big cliffhanger, so glad that didn't happen and we got a happy ending. Hopefully we'll get Rem back next season because I miss hearing her voice.
24th of march, there will be an official stage for Re:Zero, were they will reveal more concret informations about S3. What we know for sure, is that Arc 5 and 6 (S3 poster) will be adapted, this will mean at least 3 cours. Leaks have it, that we're around ~40 episodes. Which makes sense in my head as i've read those 2 arcs and i know how big they are. Rumors have it, S3 might release for fall this year. Which i'm very hesitant to believe, they will let us know for sure on the 24th of march. Season 2 (arc 4) was to establish the past, resolve the main characters pasts and establish the emilia faction, the only one that was yet to be completely established amongst the 5. Now the story will go really into motion, and that it will. Nobody is ready for S3.
echidna's face in the trials was a face when she was younger, this is echidna's face when she was older, before she died. its the same person just different ages. echidna in the trials was more of a brat. the old echidna is more like a mom, thats why we never saw her face in the roswaal/ hector flashbacks

Season 1 also had a happy ending it's just later on in the director's cut they added the cliffhanger, otherwise at least in the anime RZ seasons always end on a happy note after all that suffering.

What Roswaal said at the end just between Subaru's knighting basically meant "Sacrifice ANYONE and I will eradicate the rest so you have no choice but to reset" Subaru said he wanted to do it his way and Ros intends to hold him to that, even if it means going that far and burning in hellfire for it. By the way, it's broadly speculated that the seal on Ros, the one Subaru would've received had he lost, could potentially carry between resets since it brands the soul, not the body. We still have no confirmation whether RBD reverses time or just jumps into alternate timeline, so it's 50-50
beatrice is now contracted to subaru, just like how puck was with emilia. but subaru's mana is much lesser so shes gonna be nerfed. the only reason betty could use that super overpowered spell on the white rabbits is bcoz she's been collecting mana from whoever was in roswaal's mansion for the past 400 years. that magic is something even roswaal cant use. thats how absolutly broken it is. every spell in re zero has levels, take shamac for example... theres shamac, el shamac, ul shamac and Al shamac. the prefex denotes how strong the spell is. subaru could only use the basic shamac. betty used the highest level of shadow magic al shamac, which literally sends you to a different dimension as we see with the rabbits
She uses it at the end of arc 7/beginning of arc 8. He does definitely generate more mana as time goes on so she isn’t that nerfed as we thought. It was like 2 years time though. But compared to 400, it’s a lot better.
Genuinely the best most hype reveal trailer for a new season, it starts so ominous and something feels really off, then we get to see a bunch of returning characters all with no spoilers and nothing ruined. And not fully showing the new enemies either, and with an absolutely AMAZING song god i hope it plays again in season 3, i cannnot wait for more of the Re Zero soundtrack its one of the best of all time
Season 2’s ending was great, it felt more like a series finale rather than a season finale with how everything pretty much resolved itself with a little bow on top minus the Rem thing. I definitely felt a little empty on the inside for a bit once it was over. That being said, something I recommend doing and this is purely optional is that there is actually more to the ending that the anime didnt include and its pretty important. While possible, I dont think it will be addressed in season 3 so its probably better to know this now. There is a video called “How rezero season 2 really ends”. It probably would have been a crazy cliffhanger for season 2 if it was included but its up to you if you wanna check it out.

Al Shamak: a terrifying spell that send the target to a different, secluded dimension, from which they cant escape, where the concept of time doesnt exist. trapped forever in an empty hell. the same spell that open the barrier within worlds to pull subaru inside re zero world. if you compare s1 ep 1 and s2 ep 25 puttin gboth at 0x25 speed you can see that the effect of satella hands popping up and beatrice spell here is one and the same.
Shamak has three levels of power which can be used by people who have affinity of dark magic which is rare in itself First stage of shamak spews smoke rendering your target senses astray Second level of shamak, "El shamak" forces the target to loose control of its body Third stage of shamak, "Ul shamak" transports mind of the target to a different dimension/space Last and strongest stage of shamak, "Al Shamak" send both mind and body to a different dimension/space(used by betty here to send them bunnies off forever somewhere no one can reach) The keywords here are El Ul and Al which are used in other magic spells which change how the spell works if they can caste the spell at their level, for example rem uses Huma at its highest form Al huma which summons a huge crystal of ice during battle between the whale
AL Shamac is the ultimate form of the spell, whereas a normal Shamac isolates people from sense anything, Al Shamac sends them to an alternate dimension completely detached from the world. Think of Distortion World from pokemon where Giratina resides. Also yeah, now that Subaru is contracted to spirit, he is able to use mana from the spirit in order to use spells. Anyone feel free to correct me if I explained too simply to the point it's inaccurate, I lack the time to proper detail how the system actually works.

So Subaru is actually casting magic here using Betty as a medium. 8:48 No, the only reason the library could be accessed was cause Betty using Door Crossing to connect the isolated space of the library to Roswaal's manor, she didn't do that with the isolated space she sealed the Great Rabbit inside of it. So the only way to free the rabbit would be if someone who has the skill to undo Al Shamac decides to come around and break it for whatever reason (assuming that's even possible, I don't actually know). 12:50 It has ALWAYS been the original Roswaal, that's what he meant when he said they haven't spoken enough, every Roswaal shown been him but because interactions between them have been so minimal since Echidna's death Betty never actually realized that. Remember the first flashback showing Roswaal entering the library and how he was there looking for info, one of the things he was reading about was something regarding transferring the soul (or as he mentions in this conversation, soul transcription). Roswaal has been passing his soul down along his lineage to achieve a form of pseudo-immortality, that's also why every Roswaal has the whole clown theme going on, it's not a requirement to be the head of the clan, it's just that's Roswaal's style so he goes right back to it after taking over a new host. 15:00 It's Echidna, every time we've seen her face before now it has been in the trial/castle of dreams, the reveal here is that the real life Echidna and trials/dream Echidna look slightly different (as real life Echidna is physically in her 20s while trials/dream Echidna is "physically" in her late teens). Make of that what you will, as I'm anime only so I have no clue what that's suppose to signify myself.

Subaru IS doing something, he can't use his own broken gate to cast but Spirit art users can use the Mana of beings they are contracted to. He's not just moral support he's casting magic. And both him and Betty have an affinity for Yang type magic so he's good at using it.
The teaser at the end was a brilliant idea. You've finally reached the end of Re;Zero, at least for now. The reason why you're confused about Subaru's powers is because you didn't remember some events of season 1 and now season 2 when he fought Garf. If you go back to their fight you'll notice when Subaru is rushing towards Garf something makes a breaking sound, that was Subaru's gate. When Subaru first discovered that he has Yin affinity, Puck taught him Shamac, and then he exausted himself because he used all of his gate mana. At the mabeasts arc (when he discovers that the tiny dog was the one who cursed him), he over exausts his gate once again, but this time it was much worse and if not for Betty he would have died, both from the curses and his exausted gate, thus leading to Subaru seek a healer's help, which is Felis. Subaru was supposed to have been healed by Felis if not because of the White Wale subjugation, so Subaru had been with his gate damaged this whole time, and Felis warned him that he shouldn't use it or else he would intensify the damage. For now, Subaru's gate is broken and you'll find out the consequences of that in season 3. The contract between Betty and Subaru will also be further explained. The concept of Od, Mana, and Gate is better explained in the light novels, so if you're now waiting for season 3 to come or even when season 3 ends, you should definitely buy and read the LNs or the webnovel. Echidna left her in the library (to keep her safe from some threat) then died, then Roswal showed up as a shell of a man (because Echidna died) and began studying her wisdom fanatically looking for options to form a plan to save her, and there he found the soul transfer wisdom (which Echidna tried to use to put herself into a Ryuzu as told to us by Tea Ryuzu) and he used it to put his soul into his own children basically so that he could continue living and thats how he survived through these 400 years. But he never told Beatrice what he was doing and just kept on the charade that every generation was a new Roswal, so she never knew. Basically Roswal went out for milk for 400 years and just came back to her. "Welcome Home". And yeah Roswal being the soul of his ancestor who was a man Echidna saved because she saw kinship in him transplanted through time, Ryuzu being a spirit created from the original Ryuzu's being which was a child Echidna adopted basically, and Beatrice being the spirit child left behind who never understood her mother's wishes and actions; they all were the most important people around Echidna but have all survived through the centuries, fractured and broken as they are now, but can easily relate to each other. Shits rough.

This episode is a really nice capstone to the season. The whole pregnancy thing was because Emilia basically grew up getting her education from an over-doting Puck. In the novels there's an interesting extra scene that was skipped here (probably because it won't be relevant until much later) where we discover that Shima has been possessed by Echidna (Hence the voice in the last episode!) and leaves the sanctuary taking the name "Omega". 44:25 Bro fell for the Archbishop of Lust before the series even dropped lol All aboard the s3 hype train! Essentially you could gather from there what it was... Soul transference and preservation... The topic echidna was investigating... Rosewall has been transferring his own soul into his children generation through generation, essentially sacrificing his only child every time to be one just an empty new vessel to be his new body in order to extend his life and find the way to reunite with echidna some day... Bring her back since she is not 100% gone as we know... But to everyone around he acted like he was a different roswaal...

Basically the reason Echidna in the grave and the Echidna Subaru met look different is because the Echidna Subaru met is 18, while the Echidna in the grave is much older, in her late 20s.

The First Roswaal was Roswaal A. Mathers, this Roswaal is Roswaal L. Mathers. Each new host goes down alphabetically. He's killed 11 of his own decedents and stolen their bodies. This is why he asks if Beatrice considered him a inhuman monster. On the flip side Roswaal is fully aware of how despicable and evil his actions are.
The first season actually had a happy ending as well. It was only in the Director's Cut that they added the cliffhanger, to tease Season 2. I really like Re:Zero's way of doing season endings and I hope it continues. Like, we know something fucked up is on the horizon, but we can enjoy the happy moment until that comes.

Echidna was always chasing immortality, but wasn't able to succeed before she died. The echidna in the graveyard is probably different because she's not a fully realized duplicate. Echidna faced difficulties adapting her own soul for the process she created. So when the echidna in the trials doesn't like Emilia, those are most likely the trial echidna's own feelings rather than the original echidna. The wild thing is thinking about the trial echidna and original echidna existing at the same time before she died.
With regard to the false consequence of the kiss consider back to how Emilia let Subaru kiss her... makes that moment much more meaningful when you think what Emilia thought that meant.
Can we all stop for a moment and think about the fact that Emilia believed that babies are made by kissing, and still allowed Subaru to kiss her? She was fully ready to have his child.

It's easier for viewers (and manga / LN readers) to comprehend a new world if it is even partially based on something they are already familiar with, and only explain things that might be new or unfamiliar.
So if you don't understand the contract between subaru and Betty it's just like Emilia and puck. Betty is also a spirit so she can make contract just like puck and the reason why subaru can use of of Betty's powers is because of the contract
If you can't get sound panels, you can still get better sound quality if you just put more stuff on the walls and filling out the room more. Season 1 ended nicely as well, if you don't count that final line souring it up that was only in the directors cut. I love how this show is really good at both the really downer desperation moments AND giving us the really nice reward when the characters overcome their challenges and win. It's just so rewarding when both are done so well. We don't know when S3 is coming out. Current speculation is we're getting an announcement for that in late March at some kinda con. The team behind Re:Zero is currently airing a 3-core season with no breaks, so many think that will delay S3. Most seem to think S3 will start between Fall this year, to summer next year.
ps: the echidna we saw here is the original one, but the one suaru talked to is a copy of her, specifically, an artificial spirit with part fo her memories and part fo her power. still incomplete. so yeah, theres more to it that it meet the eye. also, it explains why she was so close to subaru, subaru is loved by spirits you know?

Congrats on finishing Re: Zero! Now we wait for S3. We 'should' get a release date in March. Subaru's gate is broken and he can no longer use magic, but with a contracted spirit(Betty), he can use magic through her. Yup, The Echidna that Subaru and Emilia met is different from the Echidna that Roswaal and Betty know. Another mystery to be solved lol As far as the timeline is concerned; dealing with Elsa at the loothouse took 1 day and dealing with the Mabeasts attacking Arlam village took a week. Then we had about a 2 month gap before Subaru makes an ass of himself at the royal selection gathering. Having his gate somewhat healed, 'training' with Wilhelm, and then dealing with the White Whale and Petelgeuse took about 5 days to a week. Then the events of S2 in the Sanctuary took another week after that. Finally, Subaru's knighthood ceremony was about a week after defeating the Great Rabbit. So Subaru has been in this world for about 3 months as of the end of S2. Of course, Subaru has spent much longer than that, but it's still amazing to see how much he's done in so short a time. Looking forward to Overlord, I'm glad to see the quartet being completed!

Yes, he is. He can't use his own magic because of his broken gate, but by forming a contract with Betty he's basically a spirit arts user now. Subaru also has Return By Death and Invisible Providence (his version of Unseen Hand), which are a different type of magic called Authorities.
For Roswaal: He took his children and replaced their souls with his own. That's how he stayed alive these past 400 years. For Echidna, that was Echidna but she made herself look different in the trials. This is also why neither Emilia nor Subaru recognized Echidna in the coffin and why Subaru did not associate "Teacher" with Echidna. The oath between Roswaal and Subaru was actually laid out by Roswaal when they did the bet, they decided to change this in the anime. But in the source, Subaru was aware of the oath and the consequences of it. Which added a lot to justify his determination to not die this loop, cause he would be f***ed if he did as the oath is on the soul and his soul travels with him when he restarts.
Season 1 did originally end on a happy note, but in the directors cut they added in the first scene of season 2. But yes, I doubt Subaru is out of trouble just yet. :P
They really glance over Subaru's contract with Beatrice, but, as Emilia had terms of a contract with Puck (i.e., he sealed her memories, she couldn't see her own reflection, etc), Beatrice's contract with Subaru also has terms, and they are as follows: - Beatrice is the only spirit Subaru may have a contract with (you can have contracts with multiple spirits, such as Julius with the 6 minor spirits, but Subaru can only have Beatrice. Puck isn't even an exception because, well, he's contracted to Emilia, so working with Puck wouldn't be a problem in the future). - Beatrice cannot restore mana on her own (I think this is something she can't do anyway, considering she's a spirit and doesn't have a gate). - Beatrice cannot use mana in the atmosphere (once again, I'm not sure she could anyway) - Beatrice can only drain mana from Subaru (keep in mind, over the previous 400 years when visitors would come to the Mathers' mansion, Beatrice would drain small, unnoticeable amounts of mana from the residents and guests. she's not allowed to do that anymore because of her contract with Subaru). It may not seem like it, but this is a contract that Subaru's life and well-being depends on. They've been hinting at it through much of S1 and the early parts of S2, but Subaru had an abnormal gate, and just the few times he used it in S1 was enough to "abuse it" - thus why he went to the capital to get healing from Felix in the first place. He was warned not to use his gate for several months to allow it to heal properly, but life happened, and ultimately in the fight with Garfiel his gate shattered, meaning he can no longer regulate mana on his own - it would simply build up in his body until it made him sick, very similar to that flashback episode where Roswaal had too much mana in his body, making him sick, and Echidna kissed him, removing the built-up mana in the process. In other words, Beatrice draining his mana per the terms of this contract between the two literally saves Subaru's life.

Echidna in the world of witches is young, when she passed away in the real world she was already much older, as Beatrice herself said, her body swap magic had been a failure and Roswaal only managed to perfect the magic when he understood that it needed to be the body of a son/daughter, which is how he stayed alive all this time. At least that's what I interpreted as her appearance being different in the real world and in the world of witches.

Just to inform you that in the novel, Subaru did have numerous brief encounters with Satella during season 1. This was never shown in the anime, but Subaru would always forget he had encountered her. Just like how when Subaru forgot about his first encounter with Echidna. Also the vail that Satella wears doesn't exist either. The vail is there because Subaru mentality is projecting this vail. Subaru isn't accepted Satella and at the end of the 3rd tea part Subaru was finally able to see her face, because he was able to accepted her in that moment
Some things that weren't thoroughly explained in the anime:
- Subaru has indeed now a contract with Beatrice. But sending the Great Rabbit to the shadow realm cost Beatrice almost all of her mana she saved up for the last 400 years. Further, Subaru can only pass low amounts of mana to Beatrice, just enough for her to survive, so they won't be able to cast such a strong spell again. Also, since Subaru's gate is broken, he needs Beatrice to absorb his excess mana, otherwise he will die. So they are in a codependent relationship now.
- 13:23 Roswaal explains, that for transcribing your soul you need to have a suitable vessel. So each generation, Roswaal fathered new children and forced his soul unto them, basically killing them.
- 29:48 Roswaal actually in his own twisted way wanted to help Subaru. He knew that trying to save everyone will be far more hurtful for Subaru, so he wanted him to reject that path by forcing him to sacrifice people.
- 30:06 "If I lost anyone, I would not hesitate to reduce everything to ashes". That translation is not correct, it should rather be "If you lost anyone, I would not hesitate to reduce everything to ashes". What Roswaal actually means, if someone, who Subaru chose to protect, dies, Roswaal would kill the rest, basically forcing Subaru now on the path to save everyone, since that was what Subaru chose.
- Another thing not explained: Roswaal only hired Elsa, so Meili was hired by someone else. Also, Elsa and Meili are part of an assassination organization. Their boss is someone they call "Mama" and they are both very scared of her.
Yeah. Al shamoc seemed a little anticlimactic considering it was the first and last time that spell will ever be cast. A testament to how op Betty is.
Betty is letting Subaru control her own mana channel his own will through her. In the web novel we get to hear Emilia's inner thoughts and she was shocked that Beatrice was allowing Subaru to essentially control her very lifeforce

The woman in the coffin e IS echidna but an adult woman while the one in the graveyard was her idea is a perfect and eternally young beautiful girl instead... Since we know she had been looking for the secret to immortality in order to be able to get all the knowledge in the world... So then what about the other witches... Do they really look like we met them ?in real life?... Meaning... Does the witch of envy actually look like Emilia?

If you pay enough attention to the underlying themes you can get several life changing messages out of it. A lot of people said after episode 18 the prelude is over but now that the Emilia camp is complete, Subaru is a knight and all the characters faced their past and went through immense development we’re in a place where the story will take it up a notch every single arc
Also don’t watch the how re:zero season 2 really ended video that’s something that we might get at the beginning of season 3 just like the after credit scene of season 1 wasn’t part of it originally. If not you can still go back and decide if you want to watch it or if you want to be surprised whenever it’s shown in the anime which won’t be for a very long time.

Return by Death, which we mostly understand how it works.
His Yin affinity, which means he could cast magic of the Yin type, Shamac and the like. Of couse, that was before his gate broke, which means he lost the capacity for his magic to come out of his body by itself.
His Spiritual affinity, which gives him the capacity to interact with spirits at an impressive level for a novice. This one meant that he could serve as vessel for Petelgeuse and that he could've been a very good spirit user, like Julius, if he hadn't made a contract with Beatrice which limits him a lot but gives him back the ability to cast certain YIN spells through her.
The Authority of Sloth, Invisible providence, is an invisible arm that can extend like one or 2 meters from his chest. He can only summon one, for very little time and makes him sick everytime he uses it. It has one benefit compared to Petelgeuse, but we've yet to see it in the Anime.
The Miasma, a by product of having an authority, is the "Aura" like thing that you mentioned. It attracts Mabeasts, including the three great ones (that we know of) and some people identify it as being related to the Witch cult, but it's most likely residue of the Authorities. It has other effects that we've yet to see in the anime
Inmunity to Gluttony's erasure, being that if someone is erased by the Gluttony Name eating, he is not affected by it. There is more to it that we've yet to see too.

Tomb Echidna's face reveal is a big mystery but there's several hints dropped. It all has to do with how the novels describe the characters features. This being a similar trend with the intentional similarities between Emilia and Minvera being described as having "cute" faces. This Echidna, the Echidna from the Sanctuary is described as having a "Beautiful" face, while the Echidna in the trial is described as having a "cute" face.
That's the distinction the anime is trying to show. For whatever reason the trial Echidna looks like a younger, cuter Echidna than the one from the Sanctuary. There's more, Hector the Devil (Mistranslation of warlock) of Melancholy said when meeting Sanctuary Echidna that she "used to be cuter". Basically the implication is that the Echidna Roswaal knew and the Echidna met in the trials are not the same Echidna.
If that doesn't make sense it's a good reminder that Echidna was pursuing immortality. Soul replication, soul transcription, and intended to use the Ryuzu clones as vessels but failed due to not being compatible. Compatibility being the issue Roswaal solved later with his own method. So really there's no telling how many versions of Echidna are out there as a result of her experiments and pursuit of immortality.
This is a great moment to mention some trivia and probably forgotten facts.
Remember how in their first meeting Beatrice drained Subaru of his mana? That's basically how their contract works. Beatrice due to her unique creation by Echidna is kind of dysfunctional compared to other spirits because she cannot drain mana from the atmosphere and can only draw mana from other people. This is implied to be intended because the purpose of her creation was to be as true to a human child as possible, this means being truly dependent on others for survival. (Beatrice was able to draw mana from the inhabitants of the mansion through her forbidden library. That's how she's lived these past 400 years.) Well because Subaru's gate is collapsed his mana has no way of escaping his body anymore so Beatrice is acting like a pseudo-gate for Subaru by draining mana from him.
So with Beatrice acting as Subaru's gate they are truly casting this magic together as two dysfunctional beings made functional together. If you remember from season 1, Julius said that Subaru has a high spirit affinity and would make for a great spirit arts user. So not only does Subaru have a high enough spirit affinity to impress Julius, a renowned spirit knight, but also Beatrice and Subaru share the same magical type affinity of Yin Magic. In fact their synergy together is so perfect there's the implication that Echidna in her schemes may have created Beatrice precisely for Subaru.
A cute Beatrice side story that shows her perspective of Subaru's arrival at the mansion in arc 2 shows that when Beatrice healed Subaru's wounds from the bowel hunter she noticed her compatibility with him was off the charts. So of course Betty being Betty she got angry that this random stranger was so compatible and she subsequently punished him with that infinite hallway prank that we see when Subaru first wakes up in the anime. Subaru finding her correct door immediately only made her more mad because that too was a product of their insane compatibility. This is how Subaru was able to sense Beatrice's door.
I just really love that the anime as been very subtlety hinting at and building up to this contract between them for a really long time.
To explain what exactly Roswaal is... the bodies are different, but the "person" inside of that body is the same Roswaal. Whenever it was time, Roswaal spirit would take over the next generation of body, and his life would continue. Roswaal ended up being the embodiment of Echidna's grand experiments. And, in fact, that's what the middle initial in Roswaal's name means. The original Roswaal was Roswaal Mathers; the first "copy" was Roswaal A. Mathers; the Roswaal we know is Roswaal L. Mathers. Which means that this Roswaal is the 12th copy of Roswaal Mathers.
15:10 This is supposed to show that the Echidna that Emilia and Subaru had been talking to isn't the same as the Echidna that Roswaal and Betty grew up with. She looks different because she is effectively a different person. However, they are in fact both the Witch of Greed. I don't think it's been explained in the light novel yet, so while we can make theories, most of us are just as confused as you are!

Just to clarify the spell system in the show, the strength of spells starts from the original incantation and increases by adding El , Ul , or Al . For example, fire magic starts with Goa, then goes to El Goa, Ul Goa, and finally, Al Goa.
So if you hear some spell start with Al like the Al Shamac Betty just used you can expect to see some crazy OP spell.

Genuinely the best most hype reveal trailer for a new season, it starts so ominous and something feels really off, then we get to see a bunch of returning characters all with no spoilers and nothing ruined. And not fully showing the new enemies either, and with an absolutely AMAZING song god i hope it plays again in season 3, i cannnot wait for more of the Re Zero soundtrack its one of the best of all time

Season 2’s ending was great, it felt more like a series finale rather than a season finale with how everything pretty much resolved itself with a little bow on top minus the Rem thing. I definitely felt a little empty on the inside for a bit once it was over. That being said, something I recommend doing and this is purely optional is that there is actually more to the ending that the anime didnt include and its pretty important. While possible, I dont think it will be addressed in season 3 so its probably better to know this now. There is a video called “How rezero season 2 really ends”. It probably would have been a crazy cliffhanger for season 2 if it was included but its up to you if you wanna check it out.

Last and strongest stage of shamak, "Al Shamak" send both mind and body to a different dimension/space(used by betty here to send them bunnies off forever somewhere no one can reach)
The keywords here are El Ul and Al which are used in other magic spells which change how the spell works if they can caste the spell at their level,
for example rem uses Huma at its highest form Al huma which summons a huge crystal of ice during battle between the whale
AL Shamac is the ultimate form of the spell, whereas a normal Shamac isolates people from sense anything, Al Shamac sends them to an alternate dimension completely detached from the world. So the only way to free the rabbit would be if someone who has the skill to undo Al Shamac decides to come around and break it for whatever reason (assuming that's even possible, I don't actually know).

Roswaal was transferring his soul to his descendants all this time. So he basically lived for more than 400 years.
Subaru IS doing something, he can't use his own broken gate to cast but Spirit art users can use the Mana of beings they are contracted to. He's not just moral support he's casting magic.
And both him and Betty have an affinity for Yang type magic so he's good at using it.
The teaser at the end was a brilliant idea. You've finally reached the end of Re;Zero, at least for now. The reason why you're confused about Subaru's powers is because you didn't remember some events of season 1 and now season 2 when he fought Garf. If you go back to their fight you'll notice when Subaru is rushing towards Garf something makes a breaking sound, that was Subaru's gate. When Subaru first discovered that he has Yin affinity, Puck taught him Shamac, and then he exausted himself because he used all of his gate mana. At the mabeasts arc (when he discovers that the tiny dog was the one who cursed him), he over exausts his gate once again, but this time it was much worse and if not for Betty he would have died, both from the curses and his exausted gate, thus leading to Subaru seek a healer's help, which is Felis. Subaru was supposed to have been healed by Felis if not because of the White Wale subjugation, so Subaru had been with his gate damaged this whole time, and Felis warned him that he shouldn't use it or else he would intensify the damage. For now, Subaru's gate is broken and you'll find out the consequences of that in season 3. The contract between Betty and Subaru will also be further explained. The concept of Od, Mana, and Gate is better explained in the light novels, so if you're now waiting for season 3 to come or even when season 3 ends, you should definitely buy and read the LNs or the webnovel. You can find the webnovel in a site called witchculttranslation.

About Roswaal, Roswaal A Mathers was always alive. He was just transporting his own soul to his descendants and did not tell anyone about it.
Echidna and Roswal were basically Beatrice's parents.
Echidna left her in the library (to keep her safe from some threat) then died, then Roswal showed up as a shell of a man (because Echidna died) and began studying her wisdom fanatically looking for options to form a plan to save her, and there he found the soul transfer wisdom (which Echidna tried to use to put herself into a Ryuzu as told to us by Tea Ryuzu) and he used it to put his soul into his own children basically so that he could continue living and thats how he survived through these 400 years. But he never told Beatrice what he was doing and just kept on the charade that every generation was a new Roswal, so she never knew. Basically Roswal went out for milk for 400 years and just came back to her. "Welcome Home".
And yeah Roswal being the soul of his ancestor who was a man Echidna saved because she saw kinship in him transplanted through time, Ryuzu being a spirit created from the original Ryuzu's being which was a child Echidna adopted basically, and Beatrice being the spirit child left behind who never understood her mother's wishes and actions; they all were the most important people around Echidna but have all survived through the centuries, fractured and broken as they are now, but can easily relate to each other. Shits rough.

This episode is a really nice capstone to the season. The whole pregnancy thing was because Emilia basically grew up getting her education from an over-doting Puck.
In the novels there's an interesting extra scene that was skipped here (probably because it won't be relevant until much later) where we discover that Shima has been possessed by Echidna (Hence the voice in the last episode!) and leaves the sanctuary taking the name "Omega".

Essentially you could gather from there what it was... Soul transference and preservation... The topic echidna was investigating... Rosewall has been transferring his own soul into his children generation through generation, essentially sacrificing his only child every time to be one just an empty new vessel to be his new body in order to extend his life and find the way to reunite with echidna some day... Bring her back since she is not 100% gone as we know... But to everyone around he acted like he was a different roswaal...

To clarify, what Roswaal means by preparing a vessel that already has a high affinity with his soul, he means his children or decedents. The First Roswaal was Roswaal A. Mathers, this Roswaal is Roswaal L. Mathers. Each new host goes down alphabetically. He's killed 11 of his own decedents and stolen their bodies. This is why he asks if Beatrice considered him a inhuman monster. On the flip side Roswaal is fully aware of how despicable and evil his actions are.
Don't worry about it at 15:15, that is just a body of a person who left Beatrice and Roswaal.

The first season actually had a happy ending as well. It was only in the Director's Cut that they added the cliffhanger, to tease Season 2. I really like Re:Zero's way of doing season endings and I hope it continues. Like, we know something fucked up is on the horizon, but we can enjoy the happy moment until that comes.

Subaru and the true timeline of Re:Zero (parts 1 and 2) by kazutrash puts into perspective how the continuous succesful loop looks like and might answer your questions about how much time actually passed since our boy came to this world.
Echidna was always chasing immortality, but wasn't able to succeed before she died. The echidna in the graveyard is probably different because she's not a fully realized duplicate. Echidna faced difficulties adapting her own soul for the process she created. So when the echidna in the trials doesn't like Emilia, those are most likely the trial echidna's own feelings rather than the original echidna. The wild thing is thinking about the trial echidna and original echidna existing at the same time before she died.
With regard to the false consequence of the kiss consider back to how Emilia let Subaru kiss her... makes that moment much more meaningful when you think what Emilia thought that meant.
Can we all stop for a moment and think about the fact that Emilia believed that babies are made by kissing, and still allowed Subaru to kiss her? She was fully ready to have his child.

No Luke, that's not how it works. If it did then I'm sure it would have been properly explained. And, to be fair, there is so much anime that I'm sure in some anime world it might actually be like that but usually you can expect things to work in anime the way they work in real life and when it doesn't then it often gets explained either directly or indirectly. It's easier for viewers (and manga / LN readers) to comprehend a new world if it is even partially based on something they are already familiar with, and only explain things that might be new or unfamiliar.
So if you don't understand the contract between subaru and Betty it's just like Emilia and puck. Betty is also a spirit so she can make contract just like puck and the reason why subaru can use of of Betty's powers is because of the contract
If you can't get sound panels, you can still get better sound quality if you just put more stuff on the walls and filling out the room more.
Season 1 ended nicely as well, if you don't count that final line souring it up that was only in the directors cut. I love how this show is really good at both the really downer desperation moments AND giving us the really nice reward when the characters overcome their challenges and win. It's just so rewarding when both are done so well.
We don't know when S3 is coming out. Current speculation is we're getting an announcement for that in late March at some kinda con. The team behind Re:Zero is currently airing a 3-core season with no breaks, so many think that will delay S3. Most seem to think S3 will start between Fall this year, to summer next year.

As far as the timeline is concerned; dealing with Elsa at the loothouse took 1 day and dealing with the Mabeasts attacking Arlam village took a week. Then we had about a 2 month gap before Subaru makes an ass of himself at the royal selection gathering. Having his gate somewhat healed, 'training' with Wilhelm, and then dealing with the White Whale and Petelgeuse took about 5 days to a week. Then the events of S2 in the Sanctuary took another week after that. Finally, Subaru's knighthood ceremony was about a week after defeating the Great Rabbit. So Subaru has been in this world for about 3 months as of the end of S2. Of course, Subaru has spent much longer than that, but it's still amazing to see how much he's done in so short a time.
Looking forward to Overlord, I'm glad to see the quartet being completed!

Forming a contract with a spirit allows you to use the spirit arts. It's magic by proxy
Yes, he is. He can't use his own magic because of his broken gate, but by forming a contract with Betty he's basically a spirit arts user now.
Subaru also has Return By Death and Invisible Providence (his version of Unseen Hand), which are a different type of magic called Authorities.
Remember that Betty and Subaru have the same magic type too.
For Roswaal: He took his children and replaced their souls with his own. That's how he stayed alive these past 400 years.
For Echidna, that was Echidna but she made herself look different in the trials. This is also why neither Emilia nor Subaru recognized Echidna in the coffin and why Subaru did not associate "Teacher" with Echidna.
The oath between Roswaal and Subaru was actually laid out by Roswaal when they did the bet, they decided to change this in the anime. But in the source, Subaru was aware of the oath and the consequences of it. Which added a lot to justify his determination to not die this loop, cause he would be f***ed if he did as the oath is on the soul and his soul travels with him when he restarts.
Season 1 did originally end on a happy note, but in the directors cut they added in the first scene of season 2. But yes, I doubt Subaru is out of trouble just yet. :P
They really glance over Subaru's contract with Beatrice, but, as Emilia had terms of a contract with Puck (i.e., he sealed her memories, she couldn't see her own reflection, etc), Beatrice's contract with Subaru also has terms, and they are as follows:
- Beatrice is the only spirit Subaru may have a contract with (you can have contracts with multiple spirits, such as Julius with the 6 minor spirits, but Subaru can only have Beatrice. Puck isn't even an exception because, well, he's contracted to Emilia, so working with Puck wouldn't be a problem in the future).
- Beatrice cannot restore mana on her own (I think this is something she can't do anyway, considering she's a spirit and doesn't have a gate).
- Beatrice cannot use mana in the atmosphere (once again, I'm not sure she could anyway)
- Beatrice can only drain mana from Subaru (keep in mind, over the previous 400 years when visitors would come to the Mathers' mansion, Beatrice would drain small, unnoticeable amounts of mana from the residents and guests. she's not allowed to do that anymore because of her contract with Subaru).
It may not seem like it, but this is a contract that Subaru's life and well-being depends on. They've been hinting at it through much of S1 and the early parts of S2, but Subaru had an abnormal gate, and just the few times he used it in S1 was enough to "abuse it" - thus why he went to the capital to get healing from Felix in the first place. He was warned not to use his gate for several months to allow it to heal properly, but life happened, and ultimately in the fight with Garfiel his gate shattered, meaning he can no longer regulate mana on his own - it would simply build up in his body until it made him sick, very similar to that flashback episode where Roswaal had too much mana in his body, making him sick, and Echidna kissed him, removing the built-up mana in the process.
In other words, Beatrice draining his mana per the terms of this contract between the two literally saves Subaru's life.
