Chronic Stress and Inflammatory Cytokines

  • When we see people with chronic stress, we find that they have high levels of inflammatory cytokines like Interleukin-6 (IL-6) in their bloodstream and an increased numbers of immune cells like monocytes and neutrophils.
    Inflammatory cytokines are substances that immune cells make and use to signal to each other and other cells in the body that are not traditionally part of the immune system.
    So with repeated stress exposure, as I said, we have high levels of IL-6. We can see high levels of interleukin-1 (IL-1), also an inflammatory cytokine,
    Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α), and so forth.
