It used to oxidise the metal & that is how the rust form. For example we have iron metal and before rusting it is as it is but after reacting with water (moisture) and oxygen it forms rust which is 2Fe2O3.xH2O , from here we can see clearly that iron is oxidised that is oxygen is added to it.
Sir, in the text there is a question , " the galvanised article is protected against rusting even if the zinc coating is broken can you reason this out?". Can you please tell the answer to this question.
If the zinc coating is broken, the galvanised object remains protected against rusting because zinc is more reactive than iron and hence can be easily oxidised . Thus when zinc layer breaks down, the zinc continues to react and gets oxidised . Hence iron is protected.

The septic pipe in my house is all corroded. My question is does this process continue through the thickness of the pipe and will the pipe some day break and leave us in shit. And of course i'm also scared of the fact that the pipe corrodes also in the side that has contact with poop. I'm fixated lately on this idea that the steel rebars in the concrete of my house corroded so much that the house will collapse. Please say smth clever and make me feel better about this.

What is the role of oxygen in corrosion.?

First you should replace it .You should apply paint on the surface of the pipe so the oxygen will not corrode .. all non metals are acidic in nature 👍
