  • How to grow New York Ironweed from Seed. This is a tall native perennial that can grow up to 8' tall. It has dark purple blooms in late summer/early fall, and is loved by butterflies. The germination rate can be somewhat low on this species, so it is better to try to grow extra seeds.

Oh finally someone shows how the seed heads look when they're ready to harvest. I've been going nuts trying to figure out how to get seeds from these purple beauties! I'm brand new at seed harvesting.

Thanks for this video. Found some of this in a field by my house. Planning on cultivating it. Any additional insights in the last 4 years?

Hi Kyle - my best advice would be to do your best to ID it in regards to the specific species. Some types will spread via underground rhizomes. You can grow those, but need to understand that they are going to spread underground. I've summarized the most common species here - growitbuildit.com/ironweed-vernonia-grow-care-guide/
The other insight, is that young 1st year plants should be protected from deer, at least somewhat. Although the plant is listed as deer resistant, I've had young plants browsed. It isn't a problem for the life of the plant after the first year and once it achieves 2-3' height.
And finally, this is an amazing plant for attracting large Swallowtail and Monarch butterflies. It really produces a ton of nectar, and seems to replenish it quickly.

Hi Alicia - you can get seeds from those. I have a couple pictures at my article - growitbuildit.com/new-york-ironweed-vernonia-noveboracensis/
But the seed heads will have small clusters of seeds, each with a small feather attached to it. You can save lots of seed quite easily, as I've seen seed persist into January.

I bought some ironweed seeds this spring. I tried planting them in the ground........nothing. I tried planting them in small pots..........nothing. Do you have any suggestions, or what's the trick?

Hi - If it was in the spring planted, it might not have had enough stratification. I'm not sure you would have enough time to do it now. So I would suggest either waiting until next year, or stratify them for at least 30-45 days. To stratify them - just moisten a paper towel (not dripping) then folder it into quarters, and have the seeds inside that. Put it in a ziplock bag in the fridge for 4-6 weeks, and then just lightly plant them in pots, and keep it moist. This plant is a tough one from seed, and I find the winter sowing is best.

      Thanks. I'll try that.

I think it is your best shot for growing it this year. Most references say 60 days stratification, so hopefully you can get some to grow with less time stratifying.

Hi, the yield wasn't great but I did get 3 seeds to germinate ( if I remember correctly). I believe, and have read that the germination rate for ironweed is somewhat low.
I've been doing some experimenting since this video. I'm starting to think that planting fresh seed is the way to go. Or, store the seeds in a sealed container in fridge until winter sowing. Basically don't let them sit in a dry area.
Last year I scattered a bunch of seed in our garden, and only got a few plants. But some of that is due to deer. This year I gathered seed from the wild, stored them in the fridge, and winter showed them around Christmas time. Nothing has sprouted yet, but check back in a couple months and I can update you.

@BigMacHoldTheOnions Funny you are mentioning that - I've actually started doing just that. This video was from when I was just getting started. Check out some of my more recent videos on a plant. I think you will enjoy it!

That looks more like Lactuca biennis (biennial/tall blue/woodland/etc lettuce) than ironweed...

It's Ironweed. No lobes on the leaves. The plants that are growing now are ironweed.
