      Yeah I agree with everyone else, it’s a give and take. Just like any job you have to give up lots of time and effort and make sacrifices (when the mom was talking about how long the girl was working and how she didn’t get any sleep it reminded me of doing work for animation, which is a profession that takes so much time and sleepless nights for even several minutes of animation to be produced)
      But anyway I think that they do have a lot of weight put on them, as does any celebrity, but it seems they do love their work and being able to perform and sing and write music, both for themselves and for us. They also get to be with their friends and travel around the world, which anyone wishes they could do, and I’m so glad that they appreciate us as much as we appreciate them. Also I’m so glad my boys were represented BTS I love you! ❤️

      Well, it's buisness after all, some companies are better some worse, but they all are quite same. Idol career is tough cause of the way kpop works and how idols as product are portraited to the public and fangirls, and idols themselves know it the best. They are trained to say certain things and behave in certain way, if they want to be successful and maintain image their fans love and follow to, they just have to follow it) And dating..kinda lol It's more for to calm down possesive fangirls and plus idols are sold by companies in the role of "boyfriends/girlfriends", like Viction marketing director said "they think they date their fans", so they should be single and available in the eye of public and their fans) The main rule is basically not to get caught)

    to those in the comment sections who said that there's more to kpop than just bts please listen to what adele said at 19:31 or here i quote what she said, "it's time to meet the band that kicked off this journey." which means, bbc's purpose to come all the way to korea was to meet bts and understand further about them but this documentary is more of a "by-the-way" kind of thing since they are already in the country - why not figure out more about kpop. also to be fair, they did feature a few other idols as they uncover deeper this industry.

    Some of these comments... People have to remember that this programme is only half an hour long. You can't get EVERYTHING about BTS/K-pop/SK culture/idol culture into half an hour, it's impossible, and no matter what they included they'd still be leaving a million and one things out. You can't please everyone. What this has done however, is introduce people who may not be familiar with BTS/K-pop to the band, industry and context, and then they can go and dig deeper if they so wish. Be thankful that they have made a good introduction to BTS and idol culture! The more education and exposure the better, and I thought Adele did an excellent job!

    • @starry_config
      @starry_config 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Exposure is good, but shouldn't the quality of the exposure matter as well? I'm sure I'm not alone with the experience of being one of the few people in my non-virtual world who enjoys Korean music. If someone were to ask me why I'm drawn to it, would I show them this? No. I think Adele was fine, but the editing and presentation, not so much. Good idea, really cool to see K-pop recognized outside of the community, but a wasted opportunity imo.

      Laerke MA there is a reason they do this. If you didn't know BTS are under a contract, and in that contract their is a certain time when kpop bands in general have a limit time to their band. BTS only has 2 more years left until they possibly disband. Unless there is something that could extend their time as a band.

      @laerkema7678 7 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Betz Castro I know they’re under a contract, but how do you know they’re going to split up? I mean, where do you have that information from? I’m pretty sure they aren’t going to split up anytime soon, they’ve just started gaining popularity from out side korea.

    • @maryg1865
      @maryg1865 7 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      BTS aren't disbanding, ignore that person. Maybe groups from the big 3 labels have to worry about their contract, but not BTS. BTS is the reason that BigHit still exists, there's only one other artist on the label (Homme) and most people don't even know them. Bang PD letting anything happen to BTS would be career suicide. They'll have some kind of change in a few years when the members start their military service, but there's still no way that the biggest artist in Korea will be allowed to disappear just like that.
      They practice so much because music and ARMY is their life. I think it's unhealthy and _hate_ the way they look ready to collapse during comebacks, but the members wouldn't be satisfied any other way. They take too much pride in working themselves to the bone.

    The reason that bts is so popular is also because they are quite different from the bleak kpop norm that you pictured in the documentary. Bts write and produce most of their own things, they never had a dating ban and even now, after they hit it big, they CHOSE to stay together in the same house.

    The media always knew that k-pop has always been there & been influencing many youths around places, but it was only taken into account like seriously by the media when BTS won in Billboard & obviously performed at the AMA too. Although there are many amazing kpop artist but like BTS literally were the first k-pop group to achieve success at such level. So its understandable why this video is more focused on BTS, i believe they were the #1 reason the video is even made for. I am satisfied with the fact that they covered BTS, the struggles of becoming idol, importance & effect of fans, fashion, & music.
    As a Army & also a fan of other kpop artists, I am really happy to know that world media is finally realizing how kpop is not be taken lightly.

      We have to be greatful? The main complaints viewers have is that the documentary took a shallow, sensational glance into the 'weird' and 'alien' sides of K-pop while glancing over the history of the Korean pop industry and the more positive sides of K-pop. Saying "they paid attention to us, we should be grateful just because they acknowledged out existence" is terrible - not the words you yourself used, but what I've heard repeatedly in the past day. There are huge flaws with this documentary in that it presents information with considerable bias and also without proper context. Those flaws should be discussed.
      Also," just because someone acknowledged you, you should ignore all of their mistakes?" Again, not your words, but I hope you yourself don't think this way. Seriously, that's not a good life outlook. Aside from this documentary, don't ever settle for people treating you poorly because at least they're paying attention to you at all. Don't settle for things.
      Also, this was made by the BBC for considerable profit. It's very heartwarming and adorable to see you sincerely thank their camera crews, scriptwriters, and producers, but please know that they did it to make money and for no other reason.

    As RM said, if the lights come, there will be shadow too. KPOP wave is great. But there's so many dark side of it. I'm living in gangnam and I saw tons of young trainees around here. Not Everyone make it. Only few survive from the painful compensation and become a star. If you think about this, you'll see more deeper messages from BTS's songs because it's all about their philosophy.

    Thank you for the feature! For those who are really clueless about Kpop they might think that all groups are just “handed out” songs from foreign composers... no. That is not the case. Like with BTS, since their pre-debut they have heavily contributed in the production process of their songs, that’s why they have this connection with their songs and thus translated to us fans.. in terms of dating, i think it’s a fact within ARMY fandom that Big Hit does not have that “no dating” rule... some fans may misunderstand, but personally, i would like BTS to date, they are young men after all and they should experience romance etc... i just love that they stand out in all aspects of Kpop. In fact, in a lot of conversations within ARMY, we believe that they are the greatest anomaly within this so-called very strict rules set by agencies in the kpop industry. They talk about topics that even the K media have trouble highlighting, they have continuously learn about music thus evolve and improve their craft instead of just waiting for foreign producers do the job.
    No shade, but such discussion has been posted in a reddit post. A Korean perspective on what Kpop is, and that in summary... she was talking how the general public doesn’t really have that “respect” towards Kpop.. in fact, kpop as term in Korea only refers to songs being exported by Idols, thus being called, idol music.. and in the general public’s eye, idol music is not a quality song since these are mostly rejected western songs, written by western composers, and the companies just hire a korean lyricist and put it in the song and then handed out to any kpop group... (again accdg to that reddit post) that’s why personally, i didn’t like Kpop in general before because the industry itself is saturated and highly competitive... but with BTS, their songs are genuinely Korean that talks about universal topics... the main reason why I, and many ARMYs identify with their songs more than a song written in English..
    I’ll edit this post if i can get that reddit post for everyone to read... that post really gives us a Korean perspective of what differentiates Kpop and BTS.
    Again, BBC, thank you.

    I have been aware of existence of kpop for a long ago, and had no interest nor special liking to it. But when I met BTS, they were the first kpop boy band I had ever liked. The thing about them that drew me into their blackhole, is their uniqueness. They have an active part into the production and writing of their own songs. THey include youth's social concerns and struggles that most of other kpop groups usually let aside, like mental health, lack of motivation in youth, society's unrealistic demands toards young people, shallow consumism, etcetera
    In fact, One of the reasons I have always disliked kpop, is its monotony. Either singing about love or break ups or temptation, or cute things, or dramatic deceiving/betrayal, or no relevant topic at all. And, personally, BTS was the first kpop band I had ever seen to make meaningful lyrics by themselves. They had a lot of neglecting by kmedia and knetz in debut era, and their struggles during that time and trainee days are so moving and sincere. They, for my taste, have a natural appeal so strong, that in a way, I always see them as human beings. Not just as idols, not just as singers I like. I have got to the point to genuinely care for their well being and happiness. I cannot explain why I love them so much in enough words. And for that I don't mean that I like the kpop genre now because I dislike it as always, but that I just have this special thing for BTS.

      THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I've been trying to find a comment like this. I'm glad that BBC put most of their focus on BTS, but they're not your average boyband that just dances and sings. Like you, I never really liked kpop, but what drew me in was how unique BTS was. Their family bond with each other and their staff members, the songs they self-produce, the messages they send through their songs in hope to change society, showing how transitioning from youth to adulthood is beautiful and frightening at the same time, the way how they incorporate classical literature in their concepts, and much more. You, my friend, just wrote everything that I love about BTS in such a thorough detail. My love for them is endless... I, too, cannot simply explain my love for BTS in just words... I believe that this is indeed why BTS is so popular. Again, BTS is just simply not your average boyband. They're here to change society and our generation.

    the thing about bts though is that they different to other k pop groups in the way that they arent as manufactured, generally have more freedom to write their own lyrics and are involved in producing their own music too. their rap line and hip hop influence makes them more unique and their lyrics talk about things others in the industry would shy away from. they are a lot more authentic because of this imo and their fan interactions arent necessarily scripted or forced like some larger companies make their groups do. which probably is why they resonate so well with western audiences as well as korean

    • @ScribbleAddictable
      @ScribbleAddictable 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      tbh a lot of other groups are told to learn how to rap / do hip hop songs, by their company, they are idols first. (for example in stray kids) whereas bts originally was meant to be a rap group, suga & rm were underground rappers first rather than idols and bts has cyphers etc, so in general they're a little more authentic. but i do agree somewhat, there are other groups with hip hop influences, for example i love NCT too, but its just not the same level.

    • @roselightz_3027
      @roselightz_3027 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There are many rappers like that. Block B is rap group with members that were into hip hop before they became idols, same goes for B.A.P (eventhough they do many music styles). BTS are authentic, but so are many other groups^^

    • @songpoetry1
      @songpoetry1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      There's been a few groups writing their own music, though. Off the top of my head I can think of Pentagon, IU and, if I remember correctly, Shinee. Pop music in general is not really known for its authenticity, but there's always a couple of artists that are. I'm an A.R.M.Y. too, but I'm growing really tired of fellow fans constantly saying that BTS is so different and better than everyone else. There's a lot of very talented groups, songwriters, choreographers, stylists, etc. who try their hardest and really pour their heart into their art and invalidating that because of personal preferences/ global appeal seems rude to me. Please excuse my rant, I just needed to express that finally.

      songpoetry1 I feel you Highlight, B1A4 and BtoB produce almost their entire music by themselves and then ofcourse there is BigBang and such. I like and respect BTS even though I'm not part of the ARMY, but I get so frustrated sometimes with some people just shoving aside the fact that many groups put just as much love and work into their music as BTS.

    I wish there would have been a brief section on what sets BTS apart from the rest of the kpop industry, bc while everything that was said about kpop is true, a lot of it doesn't apply to BTS. They write their own songs, are always involved in the production process, etc. It would have been nice to clarify that since a lot of people who see this would probably be led into believing otherwise based on this video. Other than that, it was really great, I liked it a lot.

      i think everything they said pretty much did apply to bts. there's many groups and idols out there who also write and produce their own music and also are heavily involved in their production process and even create their own choreography. that's not necessarily what defines and sets bts apart.
      i discovered kpop bc of bts and i've been an army for 2 years. i also became a kpop fan and became exposed to many groups and learned about them.
      that's why i can tell you for sure that what sets bts apart is the sound of their music, their powerful performances, their chemistry as a group, their lyrics, how they tell their own stories and personal experiences through their music, the way they've (since the beginning) connected all their music, videos, and concepts to tell multiple stories of youth along with their own. They don't hold back when it comes to talking about their personal stories of hardships and incorporate them into their main albums. Bang PD gave them creative freedom from day 1 while many groups unfortunately can't have this until they become successful enough that their company allows them to take the reigns. On sns, they all have one single account and were free to interact with fans since predebut while other groups are prohibited to even have phones and their own sns. It's different in recent years but around 2012-2013, things were different. Also, two very important things... luck and ARMYs.
      That's all that i could come up with at the top of my head that was ACTUALLY different from other groups. Many things that other people mention isn't anything especially different.

    I loved the documentary and especially the BTS segment! I’m glad they’re getting exposure here in the UK ♥️🇬🇧 however, I wish you explained why BTS have become so popular overseas, it’s because they differentiate themselves from the K-Pop norm - they write & produce their own songs, the lyrics cover topical social issues and people really enjoy their personalities (as some other k pop stars are forced to maintain a certain way to act, enforced by their company) which they push through various forms of social media!
    Also about how the k pop industry is dominated by 3 major record labels, and that BTS came from a small one and proved that underdogs can be successful also 🎉

    As a K-Pop fan since earlies 2000's I have seen a lot of changes in the perpective of the international fans of Asian Music and to be honest, lately I'm a little concerned about the way that new fans seems to see the K-Pop world and mostly about all the stress that sometimes their comments (further more the hate related ones) on internet can become a cause of stress even for idols themselfs... so is always helpful to have someone from "outside" talking about all of this to keep people grounded.

    This really says alot about how kpop is breaking all through out the world. People might hate or love it but let's be honest, kpop is really becoming a big deal nowadays. Also like BTS's music, they just break all the stereotypes people have about kpop, they just don't sing about some puppy love song but they talk about social issues (esp. youth)that is barely being tackled. They bring comfort and awareness through their music and I think that is one of the reason why BTS is very unique from all other kpop groups. I am not saying this because I am an ARMY but I am saying this because that is what made me follow BTS's music so much. Their dancing, singing, rapping, aegyo, handsome faces, etc are all just plus one to the music they make. Believe me it is their music that helped me all through out the hard times. They made me realize something that most of us usually forgets and that is to #LOVEMYSELF... Loving yourself is not about being selfish and cocky, there is a big difference on those things. It's about giving yourself a break/ patting your back after all the stress you've gone through the day... You cannot give to others what you don't have thus you cannot love others without loving yourself first ... MUSIC thus really transcends all languages...

    Hello BBC Radio 1 and Adele! Great documentary but I'd like to clear up a few things.
    There's a difference between a regular kpop fan and a BTS fan.
    Kpop groups mostly feel very industrialized to me: they seem like they are being controlled by their agencies a lot.
    But the reason I started liking BTS is that they are a huge family.
    The members, the manager, the entire staff, even the boss of the agency are really sweet people. We know them from different interviews and pictures and the BTS members are so friendly with them that they even make fun of their own boss at times.
    This shows that BTS are free and they are not being overly controlled by some higher power.
    Thats the reason why BTS is always carrying a camera around, unlike other groups. They are so natural and open.
    Plus, they play a huge part in their music. They write their own lyrics and the boss of the agency happens to be a producer, so they work with him.
    You'll hardly ever see a professional lyricist like the one shows in the documentary, helping them with their lyrics.
    Like all idols, they are hardworking and follow some rules. But Bighit does not have a no-relationship policy. Its the decision of the members to stay single to gain more popularity with the fans, perhaps.
    Bighit also does not prevent the members from being friends with other groups. Thats why they are always really supportive and on good terms with other groups.
    Fans have recorded moments in which the BTS members were seen roaming freely on the streets, so that shows that they are not restricted from going out and having a private life.
    BTS has a lot of positive energy, talent and above all, they are really close to each other. All members seem equally close to each other, like brothers. So thats the best thing I like about them.
    Watching them is like watching a bunch of best friends having the time of their life.
    This is why I think BTS is different from other groups
    and they deserve the best.
    ITs the reason army loves them.

      ZeeZ I feel like BBC showed kpop in a mostly negative light here: they focused more on the darker aspects of it. And I do believe that with the recent news about the boy group SHINEE's member committing suicide, its clear that these seemingly happy-go-lucky groups are hiding a lot of stress and depression.
      Which is why, I don't agree that it applies to many other groups.
      I think BTS is entirely different from other kpop groups because they are actually happy and genuine because BigHit, being a small company, hasn't controlled them that much.
      Thats why this documentary doesn't justify being a BTS documentary, which is what it was supposed to be, according to Adele herself.

    the reason this is mainly about bts is because this person flew down to seoul solely to meet and interview bts. i know it is a kpop documentary but covering maximum bands wasn't even their priority. they kind of wanted to show what goes on to make a kpop band and its only 27 minutes long. so i understand your disappointment but please refrain from having unnecessary expectations

      i appreciate your love for bts but bts doesn't contain the whole of kpop. its okay if you don't know who gdragon is but then again how do you not if you like bts? i mean they always talk about how bigabang inspired them to become kpop idols especially kookie. gdragon and all of bigbang as a matter of fact are idols of idols, they along with all 2nd gen kpop have inspired the artists that contain 3rd gen of kpop today including bts :). i appreciate you being a fellow army but as suga said lets not forget those who paved the way for any kpop idol to be that big. of course its their hard work that got them where they are but its also their seniors who also worked their asses off to get kpop recognized all over the world

    When there's both BTS na Victon in a video, I'm sooo happy. Both groups have the highest place in my heart and I'm so proud of them. People don't seem to notice, but Victon also takes part in producing their songs, writing lyrics, they are the group that I don't have a song I don't like honestly. Their albums are gold and they keep posting their individual songs, covers and song remakes on soundcloud. Also they are social butterflies, they can do vlives for hours just to talk with their fans and goof around, I know every group does that but once you become an ALICE you just feel the difference haha. I really feel like a part of Victon family as I feel a part of BTS family.
    Also I think both groups kinda differ from the kpop industry, just their way of living, meaning the aura around them is quite different. Because of the ammount of fans BTS privacy is quite restricted, but what I've noticed is that they still seem to keep their own stuff to themselves well. Also these days I realised that they kinda do what they want whether it's a simple interview, or any awards. I just feel like Big Hit trusts them enough to live their life the way they want, if they are hurt, they immidiately take care of them, give them at least few days of rest, sends them on vacation just so they can have a little bit of freedom. I really respect this company for that.
    As for Victon, I really like Plan A. First, their popularity isn't as striking but their work reminds me of BTS in their early years. They had 3 comebacks this year, they took part in them with producing and writing, and in between they've been releasing their own songs and covers. They take small but really steady steps to becoming a succesfull group and seeing that their company doesn't push them makes me really happy. They were even sent home at the end of the year so they could be with their families instead of being thrown into tons of activities. I also heard that Plan A has sth like mental care for their idols, and I don't know if it's just me, but artists in this company just have this really healthy and positive aura around them which for me is the sign, that they actually do enjoy what they're doing.
    Overall I liked this document, and I'm really glad that they mentioned both good and bad stuff about this industry. I've only been a fan of kpop for almost 4 years, but I've seen so many groups being created and disbanding and I've seen how many idols were and still are suffering from the pressure of this work that it breaks my heart. I just really wish they could just give them a little bit of a freedom, they are all humans that need fresh air from time to time. I want them to feel the love from the fans and be happy from what they're doing :). I really wish there were more companies like BH and Plan A

    My criticism is that you can’t mention Jonghyun as just a anecdote of how hard idol life is. His suicide hit Korea at some of its weakest places: mental health. The man’s suicide letter explains that the psychologist he saw, the doctor, he gave Jonghyun such poor advice that I don’t think the doctor ought to have a right to practice anymore. You don’t just throw his suicide in as a sprinkle on top of a sundae like it adds spice to this interesting thing you call “kpop”.
    Jonghyun’s death should never ever be just a passing mention when the wounds are still raw and bleeding.

    BTS is special not just bc they are good at dancing, singing, and are handsome, but bc they WRITE their OWN MUSIC and they always tell their personal stories and experiences and through those they always try to tell us amazing messages (like dreaming, acheieving goals, to have self confidence, female empowerment, society, economics, etc) and those are really relatable to this generation and really comfort us a lot💜 ONLY BTS DOES THAT

      Ravi from VIXX writes all his own music with the group and produces all of the stuff on his mixtape. Seventeen became known as producer idols for writing, producing and choreographing their own songs. Jonghyun wrote all of his solo songs as well as successful songs for artists such as EXO and Lee Hi. CL writes, Oh My Girl's Mimi writes, L.E writes. People don't take rappers seriously if they DON'T write their own lyrics; it's not just exclusive to BTS, and if you think it is, I suggest checking some other groups out.

    For those who keep coming after ARMYs for hyping BTS you have to understand that about 80% of ARMYs stan only BTS. They got into Kpop becos of BTS. They hype BTS but so do other fandoms. EVERYONE hype their favs for their achievements. What i don't understand is WHY is it annoying when it comes to ARMYs? WHY do ARMYs have to hype other idols when other fandoms don't hype BTS? WHY is it normal to hype bigbang, snsd, super junior, Exo etc and annoying to hype BTS? Is it becos of their BACKGROUND? Or are people still in denial that some 7 boys from an unknown company are globalizing kpop? What is matter people?
    PS: We all know BTS did not invent kpop neither are they the only kpop grp but u have to accept their global impact. They are paving the way for the next generation artist as well. FINALLY BTS IS NOT POPULAR ONLY IN THE US. THEY ARE POPULAR IN the UK, BRASIL, PHILLIPINES, TURKEY, ARGENTINA and many more.

      I'm sure other fandoms are seen as annoying sometimes, but can you tell me why ARMY got stuck with "The Worst Fandom" nickname solely because we hype up our favs ? Like, some people do get TOO hype and could rub people the wrong way, but we don't do horrible things as A MAJORITY of ARMYs, like trend slanderous, false rumors, death threats, etc. So I get confused as why people can't separate being slightly "annoying" from being actaully horrible. Idk...

    • @oliverchannelle6919
      @oliverchannelle6919 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Before ARMY had that reputation, other fandoms did. Some day, another group will come along with a bigger and louder fandom and they will have that reputation. I like it when people hype up their faves because it shows that they're enjoying music, you know? But one thing I notice with ARMYs is that they tend to hype up BTS while putting down other groups - they say BTS are the only group who talk about social issues, the only group who writes their own music, the only group with a company who doesn't mistreat them, and I think that's insulting to other groups who do the same thing.

    • @btstheglobalboygroup9542
      @btstheglobalboygroup9542 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Oliver Channelle They are fangirls what else do you expect? They even say BTS invented kpop. Is that true ? Of course not , but they only love BTS, thats it. Trust me , 80% ARMYs dont even know other kpop groups , they are western stans and in the west its quite common to exaggerate things and praise their idols. We dont mind that. But Kpop fandoms are surely annoying , if they cant even understand a typical fangirl/fanboy behaviour , then thats not our fault

    • @btstheglobalboygroup9542
      @btstheglobalboygroup9542 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Oliver Channelle Its hypocritical to say that ARMY puts down other groups. We have been literally stepped on since BTS' debut. "Underdoggies" "Nugus" "Kpop dirt" all these stuff were thrown at BTS by the same fandoms who now claim we insult their groups.
