    I've done this a few times but for audio tapes. One time in school there was a hole in the wall and a cassette tape was stuck in the hole. I took out the cassette and kept it and went upstairs to my first class of the day which was art. I had some time to kill before class so I grabbed the scotch tape and scissors and made repairs. Tape works great well at the time it did. I still have the tape but am unsure if it still plays as I don't use tape much anymore.

    Good evening/morning. I have a few questions for you. What happens when the tapes play a few minutes of footage and stops playing the footage so you just see a blue screen playing? Have you had tapes like this and were you able to repair them? What do you need to do to repair the tapes like this? Thanks.

    I actually fixed one yesterday, before watching this. I put a piece of tape perpendicularly, around the damaged part (it was ripped anyway) and I want to ask if it is the right way, or will it damage something. I haven't played it yet.

    I have a Betamax tape that's cut, I used Scotch tape to splice it together. My unit stops when it goes over the part with the tape. Is the tape triggering the end of tape sensor? Also can this damage my VCR heads. I made sure the adhesive side touches the actual videotape, not the heads.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First you splice on the back side of the tape, and no it shouldn't stop. Beta used metallic leader detection to detect the foil leader on the tape.

    I have a few VHS C cassettes and they are all fuzzy and the sound comes out animated. I thought it was maybe the cassette adapter so i bought a new adapter, but the quality it's still fuzzy. I can still see the content with constant interruptions in black and white: however, when I FF or rewind it, I am able to see the whole content with little fuzzines and almost no interruption. Is there a way to improve the quality of these cassettes? I have like 16 of them and strangely they have the same quality. I have tried different VCR players and the same result. • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the early days of video tape, yes this is how they did it. With a razor. They would put a solution on the tape so they could see the magnetic stripes, so they could cut between them. That was back in the old QUAD days of the late 60's early 70's before electronic editing and helical scan was developed.

    Do you recall the Panasonic s VHS c camcorders ? I have a pv-s62, have you recalled that model ?? One of the best made

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I laugh at the words "Best" and VHS-C.
      No VHS C camera was ever a great model. Sure the pv-s62 had a better picture than run of the mill VHS-C, but none held a candle to the cameras like the PVS350 and other full size S-VHS consumer cameras that had the FULL SIZE head drum in them.
      I had one of those a one time too, as I figured I would give S-VHS a try for a camcorder, but they cheaped out with the CCD, and it performed like crap, so I dumped it for Hi-8 professional and betacam for my hire out camera work.

    • @networkgames1000
      @networkgames1000 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      nah..... my pv-s62 is a superior camcorder lol

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a good one, but the full size units with the full size drum were more stable. That's why they put the full size mechanism in them. They could also be used as a full SVHS editor, as it had flying erase and both video and audio insert dubbing right on the camera.I had one for awhile as I was in my camera upgrading phase every year. I had the fortune of working at a dealer at the time so I got to buy every new piece of gear at wholesale, use it for a year, and then sell it for what I paid for it because that was still cheaper than new.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have played tapes that are over 30 years old and they played no problem.
      If the tapes are moldy you may have to rewind them to get the mold off. This is more of an issue with 8mm tapes as the tape is so thing that it tears the tape. VHS being a thicker tape should spool OK without the tape breaking.

    Hi hope you're well
    I did this for a vhs, but had a look the tape at the end , is shiny from the inside and less on the outside, I don't know how this is possible but I think it may have gone the wrong way since all the years of being left broken off, it's from 1993, recorded by a videographer at the time. So anyway as I inserted the tape into the VHS, it was making a slight crumbling sound, on the screen I could only see black, with a buzzing sound, only at one moment I heard some old music from that tape but other than that it's still the same, it's really important, I hope you can help.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Beta used a larger scanner (head drum) which results in longer video tracks at a shallower angle. This longer video track length resulted in a faster writing speed which gave beta a better picture. The color record frequency is also higher 688 kHz for beta vs 629 for vhs, and the tape speed is also different.

    Do not be angry, but as you stick the cassette there is terrible !!!!!! First, you stick the tape to you so that the splice does not go past the video head.
    and second, cut the tape at an angle.
    With your method, you can make it sure the dedr will soon be scraped! beautiful greens from Vienna!

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Video tape is always spliced straight. Never at an angle. This is to ensure that if it does pass over the head it is at a right angle to the rotating head. Sure there will be distortion in the picture as it passes over.
      Audio tape is generally cut at an angle so that audible clicks are not introduced as the splice as it passes over the head is a gentle quick fade from the old to the new, but you are welcome to your opinion.

    Video tape is just too easy to damage, some vcr mechanisms are so rough with the tape.
    I dont like the type of machine that keeps the tape wrapped while in f.f or rewind mode, just makes a mess of the heads/drum, dont think it does the tape any good eather.
    Ive seen quite a few vcrs that have broken or lazy brakes/clutches on the spools, when loading, the tape has too little tension and falls off the guides, makes a right mess :-(

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beta kept the tape threaded and original design kept the tension down. They had to change the original vhs design to keep the tape loaded. You a right though more rape wear. Sony had a high speed rewind that unloaded the tape.

    If anyone is repairing tapes for long term storage or use. Best NOT to use normal household Scotch type, as in time it oozes the adhesive and will gum up your VCR and the joint will again fail. Years ago I ran a videotape rental, we would get 5/10 damaged every week. We used a special very strong, non stretch, non ooze tape made for the film industry for joining 35mm film. I still have some of those tapes today. I have no idea where you could get such a tape these days sadly.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty sure I said this tape was being digitized and only needed 1 pass. That tape has now been digitized so it will never be played again. 3m still makes splicing tape for magnetic tape. It is made from mylar and is white in color. I know all too much about rental stores splicing tape. When I worked on VCRs I loved the rental shops and their bad tapes. I made hundreds a day cleaning VCRs back in the day. 10 to 20 vcr cleanings every day at 29.00 a pop. Had 3 guys working full time. I did the tough stuff, my junior techs cleaned VCRs and replaced belts. Had a great run for 15 years until DVD got going.

    • @umajunkcollector
      @umajunkcollector 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every video and audio tape has splices for the leader. The proper splice should not harm the machine. But cheap tapes can leave crappy oxide on the heads. One pass with a cheapo tape can dirty the machine. Don

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The splice for the leader never touched the heads, as the optical end sensors trigger a stop command as soon as the light from the led shines through the clear leader.

    • @umajunkcollector
      @umajunkcollector 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Um old school, but don't like splices on anything. I chuck broken vodeo tapes, don't bother, unless like here, something special, and to digitize after one last play. Dirty tapes clog heads far more often than a rare splice. I hate cheapo or rental / library dirty tapes. I dont miss video tape in any format, may get rid of that old crap. Don

      Am I missing something? Why would someone have Scanners on VHS-C rather than VHS in the first place, and how would they have fitted the whole film onto the small tapes (unless it was one of the obscure ones with very long running time and they used LP mode)?

      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Splicing tape is best, but I was not about to run out and buy a roll for 1 tape. I only needed it to play once to digitize it. Regular tape or residue free magic tape works great. Again as I said in the video I only need it to play once. As a rule you should not splice video tape at all. There is always risk to the playback heads, but for recovery sometimes this is necessary. If it was a full size tape I wpu normally just splice it into an empty shell . It would end up on 2 cassettes if it was something I was keeping on tape.

I have most of the formats. VHS portapack, betamax portapack, 3/4 umatic portapack, betamovie, full size VHS camera, vhsc camera, video 8 full size, handycam video 8, handycam hi8, digital 8 camera, miniHDV, 3ccd HDV, professional DV and broadcast BETACAM. Yes I think I have enough old cameras.
