Oh my god, my mom has held on to this exact catalogue since 1975. Seeing that cover felt like being smacked in the face!! I used to leaf through it ALL the time as a kid; such a fantastic view into the past. Can't wait to see what you think! :)
I don’t usually comment on your videos, but this is one of the rare occurrences where I’m getting nostalgia from an ASMR video. My mom-not just on holidays- whenever she was bored would always read magazines and newspapers at the dining room table, flipping through them, cutting out pictures/articles/comic strips, gluing them into a binder full of blank pages, highlighting words, and writing down recipes to eventually try out the next time she makes dinner. As a kid I always felt peaceful whenever I heard it, even when I played video games in the other room on the weekends.
This brings back so many memories. In 1975 I was 14 years old and I wanted a maxi dress or bell bottoms so badly. My sister and I both got our first pair of bell bottoms that Christmas and I was so excited to wear them to school after the holidays. Good times!
Yesss - those bell bottoms were to die for. I had a low slung, lilac, thin waled corduroy, floor-grazing pair - and thought I was the coolest kid ever 😎
Haha, my parents had me believing in Santa until I was in 7th grade! 😅 The magic of Santa is something they really wanted to keep for me and my sister. I honestly don’t know why I didn’t realize it sooner but I enjoyed the innocence of it.
I was so curious about the pants being $13.25 so I calculated what that would be today and it's $68.45. I work at a women's retail shop and we have very similar pants for around $68.45 so I thought that was interesting!!
Omg as a Torontonian this is so comforting! My mom worked for Eatons in the late 80s into the 90s and I have many of her hand-me-down sweaters that I cherish that never seem to go out of style so this is so lovely to see! ❤️
Absolutely killing me with nostalgia here. My mother worked at Eaton's until the day they closed in 1999. She still has EATON BEAUTY dolls, and so much EATON branded merchandise she is slowly parting ways with. Eaton's just SCREAMS my childhood. Remember going there to buy my first vinyl records and toys as a child. Thank's for this sweet trip down memory lane to much better times!
I remember when I was young my mom would always get one of the magazine catalogs Toys R'Us had in their store and every year I would have a sharpie circling all the things I wanted for Christmas. This video really brought out that childhood nostalgia! 😭 ❤
it makes me a little sad I never grew up with catalogues like these... they're all so eloquently crafted to show off all the items and really reminds you of the craftsmanship that has gone into creating all of the pieces you see. there's a certain charm to it that I can't really see replicated in online storefronts like amazon, maybe its how home-ly (and a little tacky) the displays are? either way, wonderful video, really loved relaxing to this one while getting my sewing work done :) thanks so much!!
!!! Ok I’m going to have to request some kind of roleplay writing out a letter to a pen pal or sweetheart! The writing whilst wording the sentence out loud at 2:07 is so relaxing! ✨ Loving every moment of this so far, and am about to fall asleep! 🥰✨
A pen pal would be so cute! Choosing stationary, picking out washi tapes and stickers to use, writing the message. It could be really darling. A letter for a sweetheart could be for around valentine's day too.
the snow lodge craze of the 70s seems to peak out a bit in this catalogue. this was so amazing to experience. thank you for all of your vintage videos, ALB!
I love this video so much I keep coming back maybe for this holiday season if you could get your hands on another catalog, would love another one of these
I love looking through vintage/antique catalogues, just to see what the stylings of the clothes and the items were. It's one thing to see the clothes on a modern mannequin or in a vintage shop or in a museum, but seeing them in context in the stylings of the time really makes you see them how they were intended to be seen by the stylists & manufacturers of the day. That whole women's fashion section at the beginning really smacked me in the face with the whole 'the 1970s were just the 1900s but with polyester' huh xD
My mum had one of those exact fashion doll sets when she was a kid!! The ones in the pink boxes! I remember playing with them at my grandparents house with her when I was a little girl! Thank you for the trip down memory lane 😊
You had the Sears catalog Wish Book. Nothing topped that! Then there was Coley's in the Midwest, the slimmer Western Auto, and of course ,"The Famous Spiegel Catalog Company" (60609). Dizzying array of merch on every page, those letters in boxes, the whole scene takes me back. Just wait 100 years and we'll be pining for Amazon.
This is such a great idea for ASMR . Very nostalgic both from making a list for Santa but also because my Grandma had a collection of magazines from the 1970s-80s I used to look through on quite days.
I love this! I wasn't expecting to spot my dad's stereo set that he's owned forever in the lower left at 38:06. He worked at Eaton's when he was young, so it makes perfect sense that he probably bought it from there. Looks like he might have gotten a good deal on it too lol
I remember some of these items from my childhood, either owned by my family or relatives. The clown punching bag I had forgotten about until you turned the page; and I still have that jewellery box!
Some pages being black and white, and others in color is actually to save money on the printing of the catalog. The catalog is printed on both sides of big pieces of paper and then folded into several 'quires' that together form the catalog. To save money, they printed some parts in black and white (which of course only uses one color of ink) and some in color. If then the pages were folded and bound together, color pages would be alternated with black/white pages. :D Old books also are most of the time in black&white, with sometimes one quire in color, like an old encyclopedia for example. Who have lots of text pages and a couple of illustrated color ones. Thank you for this great video! Really great to see an old catalogue like that, that is in perfect shape!
So many memories. You had me misting up. We had so many of the things in that catalogue. I miss catalogues like those. I miss department stores. I miss malls. I miss actually shopping. People may think the 70s were "problematic", but I'd gladly give up a dozen years of my life to go back there and stay. Say what you will about polyester, but it had durability, held it's shape, and didn't need ironing. In fact, most of those fashions you liked so much would be almost impossible to replicate with natural fibers because they're too limp.
This is such an incredible video. Your excitement is so contagious, I love your appreciation for all these vintage items, and the sounds are so comforting and relaxing.
Oh my goodness!! I got all of those toys for Christmas one year, I believe I was in first grade.... I was thinking around 1976.... I have photos packed away somewhere... this is great... the funny thing is we did not have Eaton's in San Diego on the west coast we had the big JCPenney catalogs which looked idential to that Eatons catalog... you were scrolling a little too quickly because the pages were damaged and I was trying to look at all of the dolls but you said you were not big on dolls. This was fun to watch and reminisce I actually stayed awake for the entire video which never happens! Lol
Oh my God. The nativity set on the top right on the Christmas ornaments page- my mom still has that one! We replaced a few of the figures through the years but she still has a bunch of the original figures. What a fun nostalgic video, thank you! 💕
these are some of my favorite types of videos from you, i always feel so relaxed! this particularly brings back so many memories of flipping through sears catalogs as a kid
Love those coats with the fur trim. Really I love all the clothes in there. I’m sure the fashion is considered dated now but I love how all of it looks! Excellent video.
I love this. The whispering, page sounds, and vintage catalogue which for some reason is very soothing to look at (I love old pictures). Thank you! Haven't come across your channel til now and I'm subscribing!
I miss the old Sears catalog days 😭 when I was a kid I would just look through the HUGE annual Christmas one and dream about every toy I wanted. I'd circle stuff. I'd look at the models and pick out what features I liked the most. Lol I'd draw on their faces and stuff too 🙄 Love it ❤️ nostalgia
Oh My, that brings back fawn memories of Christmas with my extended family...when you had to order Christmas presents through catalogs because department store were too far away.
To alb I'm in love truly with your videos your softness to your silky voice is tingely while I relaxe in my silky lounge wear is so soothing to me thanks
This is such a brilliant video! I’m a design historian so I’m biased, but I loved looking through the catalog SO much (with your relaxing narration of course 😴) a real snapshot of society / consumer culture for that place and time… Happy holidays to you and your loved ones 🤗✨🎄🎁
31:00 "I don't like gag gifts, personally... You could've just got something that I actually wanted." Why does this statement makes me want to get you a gag gift??? 😂😂 Reverse-psycholog-ing us over her! Btw, I didn't realize how fascinating vintage catalogs would be!! Especially the prices of electronics. Thanks for sharing! Relaxing and entertaining to watch.
I have a picture of my dad and his brothers from the late 70s/early 80's, and his youngest brother is wearing a Peter puck shirt! (It was a hand-me-down tho haha they didn't order it)
The "Cher"-like fashion doll [46:56] was, I believe, Tiffany Taylor. You could flip her hair around from blond to brunette. I had one and LOVED it!!! i was also very much like you when it came to baby dolls: not so much. :D I wanted stuffed cats and fashion dolls. :D This was so awesome to look through with you!
Oh my god. I just saw the Weeble Wobble treehouse I had as a kid in the catalog. Both my kids played with it as well. And the sad thing is… I finally had to throw it out recently since it got ruined in our garage 😢

This is so sweet and makes me miss being a kid
It represents low stress periods of life.

@@dalhousieDream As a 23 year old, I just wanna say that I would LOVE a pair of those! They sound AMAZING! You *absolutely* were the cool kid!
In 1975 I was ten years old, and yes, still believed in Santa. Thank you for the beautiful memories. 🥰🥰🥰
Haha, my parents had me believing in Santa until I was in 7th grade! 😅 The magic of Santa is something they really wanted to keep for me and my sister. I honestly don’t know why I didn’t realize it sooner but I enjoyed the innocence of it.
@@willow940 Christmas was magical for me. Who doesn't want a touch of magic in their lives? 🥰🥰🥰

This video is ASMR perfection. Magazine flipping. /Vintage/ magazine flipping. Crinkle paper. Writing sounds.
I feel like this is the ultimate gift.
this is one of the most relaxing videos I've watched in while omg. the book sounds, writing sounds, whispering, all perfect
Reminds me of how excited I was back them picking out clothes from the Sears Christmas catalogue! Those were the days.
I graduate tomorrow and I’m finding it hard to sleep because I’m so anxious but this video will be the perfect thing! Thank you x
Good luck!
What an amazing accomplishment! Congratulations to you 💖 Things are gonna go great 😊
aah yay! congratulations!!!

Penneys, Wards, and (locally) The Emporium. And I remember Western Auto. Thanks for the reminder.
I love this format, please do more! A Skymall from the 90s/2000s would be fun to look back at.
YYYEESSSSS MORE MAGAZINE FLIPPING!!! I AM IN HEAVEN!!! Perfect for this windy night!

Eaton's closed in 1999.

Here in Britain, every kid went through the Argos catalog to find their Christmas presents 😂
I love this so much! I love the whispering, I love the old catalog... I hope you do more of them in the future. Merry Christmas!

I'm from southern Ontario and my dad is from New Brunswick, but my family and I currently live in Nova Scotia :))
My parents own the big nativity set at 27:12. Still put it up every year. It has actual straw on the roof, and gets pretty messy still
49:45 Flashbacks to psych class. That kid came straight out of Bandura's bobo doll experiment
The "Cher"-like fashion doll [46:56] was, I believe, Tiffany Taylor. You could flip her hair around from blond to brunette. In love with those BOOTS
1976 Olympics were in Montreal, hence all the Olympic stuff at Eatons.
My equivalent to this when I was growing up here in America was the Fingerhut catalogue. Anybody else?
Oh my god. I just saw the Weeble Wobble treehouse I had as a kid in the catalog. Both my kids played with it as well. And the sad thing is… I finally had to throw it out recently since it got ruined in our garage 😢
I will always ride or die for TV trays and mustard yellow
