Symphony X has my favourite metal sound. Even their weakest tracks are amazing because of the sound alone. Also Michael Romeo's rhythm guitar is the best thing I've ever heard.

Classic Symphony X. Neo classical inspired shredding, awesome vocals above average lyrics. They evolved into a more signature style much heavier with time, but they're still awesome.

Symphony X has been around for quite a while. At least 20 years or more. They're definitely Prog Metal, but they did have that galloping riff in this song that is typical of Power Metal. The vocalist is Russell Allen who teams up with Jorn Lande on collaboration albums.

Pretty good song, but really would recommend (outside the obvious Odyssey and also Divine Wings of Tragedy) Awakenings, Evolution, Of Sins and Shadows, Bird-Serpent War/Cataclysm, A Fool's Paradise, or even Candlelight Fantasia over this. I don't mind Wolf's reaction, but I also don't think this is a great way to show him what SX is about.

I don't get it. Really I don't. In the beginning when Wolf said how he doesn't like the cliche power metal vocals I said to myself "oh boy, then he's gonna love Russel's god voice". And then he goes and says that his vocals were "okay". In what part of the universe are Russel's vocals just okay? His voice is something to be researched from scientists. He can have insanely deep growls, and then go to beautiful clean screams.
What I do get, is that Inferno is a not a good song for a starter. Hell, I personally believe that Inferno is one of their weaker songs, because of how fast it changes moods. It's called Inferno, but musicaly it sounds too happy sometimes.
Go with "Of Sins and Shadows", "Sea of Lies" or "Absence of Light". They have more character, they are more groovy in their own way, and they have much more concistency without beeing too straightforward.

I get the wanting to see the raw and real stuff even if it is dark. Like looking at the base of the mountains you can see all that it really is, All the jagged peaks and cracks and flaws. Then looking up the mountains seeing the realness rising out of the dark to the pure snow caps and seeing the true form of the mountains. Where as looking just at the snow caps and a thick layers of fog hiding everything, kinda like its bad and the real truth, the fog is to make everything look better than it is like glazing over the truth.

I understand Wolf's conundrum. Symphony X is an incredible band, and the guys have top notch technical chops, but they have grown a lot as songwriters and composers, as well as their production. This is one of their earlier songs, when the transitions and time changes sounded more forced.
I would recommend some of their more recent songs. Check out "Serpent's Kiss", "Iconoclast", or "To Hell And Back". You will be highly impressed.

  • @AtrociousNightmare
    @AtrociousNightmare 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I feel like Symphony X have three different identities.
They have a commercial side with typical power metal songs which are easy to listen to and don't leave you with much; personally not a big fan of those, which are prevalent in their latest albums, especially after Odyssey.
Then they have a clean, powerful, impactful side that shows brightly in songs like the one you listened to. So energetic!
And then they have their epic journeys, Odyssey (the track of the homonymous album) is a perfect example, and that's my absolute favorite side of Symphony X and the main reason why I fell in love with them many years ago.
You should at the very least do yourselves a favor and listen to that song, which could be an album by itself really. And if you like that, or don't like that tbh, give the entire album "V: The New Mythology Suite" a fair shot, because I think it's their peak, and you will not find anything like that anywhere else. It's truly amazing.
Thank you for these videos and your honesty!
I was honestly surprised too by Wolf, especially after the beautiful self-analysis after the song, because I feel like I had the same feelings and upbringing he did, which is part of the reason why I like this kind of music so much! (even his Dragonforce bit was basically me talking haha) Maybe it was simply not a good song to start with.
I'd personally start with the album Twilight in Olympus.

Sounds like Dream Theater if sung by Mike Patton and with guitar played by Dime-bag Darrell but produced for a skateboard video game in the late 2000's, to mimic the sound of the late 80's (think Steel Panther as they relate to hair rock.) I'll be impressed if you're following 'cause I'm not even sure if I am Wolf :P Not bad in the slightest and I could see how people would love it but it's just not an appealing sound to me.

I get Wolf's point. Even though this is one of the 3 or 4 songs i love from Symphony X, and I consider Russell Allen one of the best singers in the biz. I struggle liking every other song they release. Mainly because I like my music to be direct, to just go for what I like and not be overcomplicated. It sounded compressed like playing in a little room with no acoustics and the voice like it's recorded seperately from the music and just pasted over it. I like this kind of music, but not this song and the singer. It just didn't sound like a glued together piece. But a few riffs were very cool I'll give it that.
But hopefully there's more to come. A bands sound changes from different periods in time. So I'm open for more picks and I might check out some live videos. "Not resonating", exactly my feelings towards this song.

Wolf hit upon one of the pitfalls of prog metal: With all those changes, there's the ever-present risk of the change going in a direction that doesn't work for the listener. I think that's one of the reasons that RUSH is a polarizing band, where people either love them or hate them, even from album to album, or song to song. When your band is doing so many experiments, some will soar, and some will suck.
It's highly subjective, girl. Don't judge him too harshly for it.

This song rates pretty low on my SX meter. I hope you'll listen to something from their older albums, "The edge of forever" is a great one.

This was a weird song to pick for a 1st-it's ok, but not mind blowing. I think Wolf would like the later albums. Russell's voice gets better, stuff gets heavier. I think he ought to start with Paradise Lost, Iconoclast or Underworld. Of course, there's no accounting for taste in voices- although if someone likes Dio and Dickinson, I don't know how they wouldnt like Russ Allen, too.
