My rose of Sharon has a mind of her own. 😂 I prune her every year around this time (early spring) and she grows huge! Last summer, I propagated her and placed a few of her stems on the other side of my garden. Can't wait to see if they'll bloom this year! I love planting my cucumbers next to her! The bees love it and they don't bother me. I've also seen a few hummingbirds visit as well. She is absolutely beautiful in summer. Love your video! I pulled it up to save for my neighbor... He told me he had never pruned his tree. ❤❤❤ I'm happy to share the info. Thank you so much!
Rose of Sharon does reseed readily, but newer cultivars are either sterile, therefore seedless, or Like Pink Chiffon, double flowers with far fewer seeds, so look for those. I have not had trouble with seeds on new rose of Sharon I have planted in recent years in my Zone 5 garden. Thanks for watching!
@@GardenGateMagazine Dead heading before the seeds drop help control new ones from springing up. When they do the lawn mower takes care of the ones in the grass and any other stragglers are easily extricated if you don't let them grow season after season, and you can relocate some to areas you'd like them in. I like to prune them with one main stem, keeping them pruned to have a lollipop look with the beautiful flowers blooming on the top...keep the top pruned to you height...it's much easier and looks beautiful.
When is the best time to prune Rose of Sharon so you don't effect the bloom for that year? Should it be done in the Fall after it blooms or early Spring?
It flowers on new growth from current year so you will want to prune in late fall/early winter or in early spring before buds form. Thanks for watching.
My plant Rose of Sharon pink chiffon in the 50cm wide pot, I don’t have much space in the garden, is it wise to grow this plant in the pot and how and when to prune this plant?🇬🇧
Hi! Jenny our gardener says you can grow Pink Chiffon rose of Sharon in a container, but eventually it will need to be transplanted into the ground in a few years as it grows. Prune it in early spring just to cut out dead branches, crossing branches, and to keep the shape and size in scale with the container for a while. Once it gets too big, just plant it in the ground. I hope this helps!
For those of us who don’t prune them that much, what would you recommend for trimming? I heard somewhere that the left over bud heads should be removed. Is that true?
You can trim it any time really. Rose of Sharon is very forgiving. The only need for removing the seed heads is if reseeding is a problem. You’d want to do that before the seeds mature - usually fall.
Rose of Sharon reproduces from seed and root starts. I prune mine after blooming to the size I like to keep them for a privacy hedge. I remove the lower branches to expose their multi trunk structure, and I cover the bed under them with weed barrier and cover it with mulch for a clean look and easier removal of seed starts, and to stop new starts from roots. However, they will reach further out into the yard or open territory to put up new shoots. They will typically follow the water route. My hedge row ends at the top of a slope. They have put up new starts 20 yards down the slope extending the hedge row to the end of the yard. I pull out what I don't want.

Plant is very invasive in my 7A garden. Reseeds readily and has deep roots
