    I want to say one little correction:
    The honorary title of mayor is ONLY given to the chair of districts with borough or city status NOT those without that status, also it can be given to the chair of parish councils that have Town or City status.
    Second point:
    There are also a few mayors in the UK whose position isn’t just honorary and actually carries some meaning such as the mayor of London and the mayor of bristol

      Just curious how the Mayors or Liverpool and Manchester differ from the Mayor or London or if they have essentially the same powers?

    • @tobeytransport2802
      @tobeytransport2802 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@mischaprice the mayors of Manchester and Liverpool are the executive of the city region (a voluntary region which any of the boroughs that take part can leave) whereas the mayor of London has the power to pass the transport policy, police policy etc for London and the only people who can stop him are the London Assembly who have to vote 2/3 to stop him

    My parish is the biggest in the district, it’s made up of two large villages on the edge of a medium sized (unparished) town. My parish has about 7500 electors

    It’s always felt strange to me, I live in a three tiered area in Kent, I have a parish and a district and a county to deal with... which can be a pain but it’s strange how oddly different the parish feels compared to the district (mines actually a city council but that doesn’t really mean anything). The parish feels very informal, it has a logo that was obviously made on Microsoft publisher or something and the people you are dealing with are Real People which is great but on the other hand they can be very annoying and not follow the procedure whereas the city council (only one level up) you email someone, then they phone you and say they’ll pass it on but it never gets to who you want it to because everything is so far removed and alien, which is odd because my parish hasn’t had a contested election for ages.. probably since it was created by the city council in the 90s and the city always has elections.

    This was very informative, I just started a role in one of London's 32 councils, could you do a similar one on how London councils work as it differs from county councils?

    if every resident in every street in the UK pooled half the money they give their councils every year, they'd have enough money to maintain infrastructure, provide security and health care and there'd be enough money at the end of the year for a big party. Anyone still think you local government are worth what you're paying for?

    Hello, thankyou for this, so the overbearing nature of local government departments is purely of their own doing? They are obliged to provide transparency and fairness?

    • @robertbrander787

      Morally obliged, politically free to behave as they wish. They can even arrange for the police to be absent so that they can behave as their example of democracy failures (country leaders), political and royal

    Are any political and administrative powers devolved to the counties of England like they are in the states of the USA or provinces of Canada ? Or is it all centralized in Westminster ?

    • @reubenwaring
      @reubenwaring 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Powers are usually devolved to mayors of individual cities on a case by case basis and counties don’t have much power

      With the localism act every trace of accountability of councils has been eliminated.
      The gang culture of don't do as I say, now is official at all levels. M.P.'s can have parties in lockdown but others will be fined. A voter whose property is flooded when it rains has no meas of finding out who is responsible for curing the problem. Proper road drainage was not arrange when an estate was built (Chestnut Close, Rushmere, Ipswich). It took 34 years for the problem to be cured. Some residents had sewage in their dwellings due to blocked sewers.
      Every effort was made to prevent voters speaking at council meetings. Councillors with their own play projects such as getting a camera so that they could play speed cops catching motorists speeding to church on a Sunday morning did not make time to observe the flooding. By chance, when coming home from my allotment, a councillor suggested that I be photographed at Chestnut Pond together with him and a now deceased county councilor. The councilor declared he was not concerned about the problem, he thought it was a nice day for a publicity outing for himself and my M.P. The councilor decided to leave it to the professionals to sort the problem out. In the mean time he pointed out that our region had 80 similar problems.
      Despite my request in a local magazine to hand dig a trench free of charge not being responded to I dug the trench . I was reprimanded despite the fact that the trench cured 90% of the problem.
      During the 34 years water was taken away in tankers instead of the broken land drains being repaired. A meeting attended by my M.P. was held to discuss whether a 50 metre length of gutter was to be installed. A vote was not taken. I was told that the name of the person who would make the decision was not known but he would ring me up. He did so not knowing why. The road had just been closed and made up. Never having observed the situation he decided that vehicles should drive slower when going round the flooded bend. After observations after the next rain it was agreed that a gutter was required. The road was dug up for the gutter to be installed.
      I arrived at this website since I have always been concerned about the way the law is enacted. I wrote to Luke Hall, minister of Localism. I was looking for 'Open and accountable Local Council Plain english Guide'.
      Can you, John Bower get the British National Association of Local Councils (NALC) website. I think you will find it just another example of primitive cultures interested in parties and self glorification.
