Early 90s Jim Lee felt like a movie by Spielberg and Lucas in their prime. Later Jim Lee feels like Transformers era Michael Bay.

Yeah, he does seem like he's spending the later part of his career trying to recapture that early 90s magic.

The yellow and blue uniform! One of my first comics ever!

Yeah, it was one of my first ones too, and it's one of those ones that can make somebody a lifelong comics fan.

Boy that first page is Art Adams as hell.

Didn't make that connection before; yeah, I can see it, although Art would've rendered the hell out of the brickwork, stuck Gumby in there somewhere and taken 3 weeks doing it.

Digging this series. Reminds me pleasantly of Cartoonists Kayfabe.

Thanks, man, I appreciate the compliment. I'll never claim to have the wealth of knowledge Rugg & Piskor have, but I've probably read more 90s comics in the last year than just about anyone else!

Great vid! This art is pretty great. I think why I'm not as "impressed" with these X-men examples as most are, is probably because the colors aren't doing Jim's art justice. It looks like on some of the larger panels that they are barely going beyond flats if at all, and letting the hatching do all of the work. Not sure if the camera isn't picking up the colors very well or if it is just the way it was done. I can see all of the good things like the composition, the poses he does, and other things, but the color really does seem like a down grade to his work. And for me at least it does muddy the way I am seeing these pages. I know it's not Jim's fault, but it does skew the visual experience quite a bit.

100% Looking back at these now, they look so washed out. Can be hard to ignore.

I'll agree it's kind of washed out, I guess I just don't see it as a detriment- honestly the computer colouring kind of ruined comics a bit in my opinion. Yeah, it's more vibrant, but it also became more the focus of the comic, which I think is incorrect.
That said, I just usually don't notice colours in comics. I'll often find myself in these going "oh, maybe I should talk about colour on this page... oh! Wow, that's eye-catching, now that I told myself to look for it".

It's funny how often I just don't see it- just this is how comics look. Computer colours start up in 1992 and I'm like "Is there a fly or something near my head? I'm weirdly distracted".@@Biff.future

Computers ruined comics! Computers ruin everything! I feel like I'm in the 60's haha.
Color has been a part of comics for a long time. It's just as important as the writing, composition, anatomy, and whatever else one could critique. There should be advancements in all parts of comics along the way. Digital colors or traditional. Neither one is a problem if done right. If the colors are overdone, underdone, or mediocre, it's distracting regardless if it was done traditionally or digitally. You have touched on color in a lot of the image vids before. Usually something looks really good or really awful (It's usually the awful stuff haha).
Not sure how this comment will read, not trying to attack you, or start an argument. On to the next revisit!

@@TheMontoya76 Nah nah nah, we good. I would agree with you that computer colours are just a different kind of tool, when used judiciously; the problem I think is that comics has no common sense, and hasn't for decades. Used as a support for the art it's absolutely fine, but instead it was often used as a crutch, to the point today where oftentimes there is no shading, there is no rendering, there is no inker even- the colourist is expected to figure out most of the drawing. I think in some comics that's fine, but not superhero comics.
Bear in mind I'm not trying to twist this like your advocating... whatever, not the case; but I think the one thing inevitably implies the other, and I think it leads to some boring-ass looking comics.
I'm done my side now! Cheers, bud.
