  • La Grande Bellezza or The Great Beauty is a 2013 Film directed by Paolo Sorrentino and stars Toni Servillo, Sabrine Ferilli, Carlo Buccirosso, Carlo Verdone.
I had my best shot at pronouncing the Italian and I apologize to any unfortunate soul who had to suffer through it.
    Thank You For Watching!

Nice review. I really like, as pointed out, here that the movie gives you ambiguous impressions about the characters, the high society and Rome. I think it is intended. And good movies live from the conflicts. I think there are a few different conflicts in this movie but the main is the clash between joy and meaning, between the earthly and the divine, the ugly and the beautiful. For me the movie is also an ode on life itself. Because, so often you can't tell the good and the bad apart in it and even more often good and bad are intertwined in each other. And this is the great beauty in it.

In Italian, and in the way Jep uses it, "mondano", which you mistranslate as mundane, means a completely different thing. It refers to a person involved in frivolous high society life, parties, balls, fashion shows, show business receptions, etc. A socialite, is what the English speaking world would call it, and it's being used as a noun rather than an adjective..

I hope you get back to doing more movie reviews. My community does not have a movie reviewer we can trust. Nice job here.

Great review and nice portrait of Leo X on the wall. If you like Italian movies and the actor Servillo, I suggest you to watch "Long Live Freedom" (italian: viva la libertà). Best regards

    Very nice review. Thank you.
This is one of my favorite movies and I am still watching it from time to time.
There is one scene where people kiss saint maria's hand and finally she drops her sandals. Everyone in the hall look astonished. I wish someone could give me a deep insight about this scene.

I took it as her taking the whole affair with not much seriousness, her age and experience allowing her to see the ridiculousness in the situation and answer it by being playful like a child; this contrasting with the crowd of supposed authorities in the spiritual matter taking the ritual very seriously because they take themselves too seriously as well.
