- Leonard Cohen on an outdoor stage at Indigo bookstore in Yorkville, Toronto, May 13, 2006. Singing "So Long Marianne" with the Bare Naked Ladies, Ron Sexsmith, and Anjani Thomas.
Cohen is a bit hesitant at first and even has to be reminded of the lyrics a few times, but he becomes increasingly enthusiastic and delighted by singing one of his classic songs.
I cant get enough of ths clip, must have watched it 100s of times over the years, it’s so spontaneous.
Hear, hear!! I look it up every few months!
This is legendary. Ron Sexsmith telling Mr. Cohen the lyrics of his own song. You can tell how ecstatic Ron is sharing the mike with Leonard. This is heartwarming
On my 48th birthday. Can't believe I didn't cut work to go down and see this!
Funny to see Ron prompting his hero with the lyrics.
A very special video, I'd say.
This is terrific... I remember waiting at the side of the stage all day long to see this.
Isn't that just the most wonderful bit of video footage, that you so much for being there, recording it and posting it for all to enjoy!
The guy playing the guitar (I'm sorry, I don't know his name) is having just the best time and why not! What an honour to play for LC.
I was thinking exactly the same thing, the guy on guitar is loving every moment of being onstage and singing with Leonard Cohen.
3:35, siempre aprieta los puños cuando canta, de joven no lo hacía porque siempre se acompañaba con la guitarra, maravilloso Cohen, siempre serás el mejor
I had the chance in my life to see many of my favourite singers live. But not L.Cohen. which I listened to all my life since Suzanne. And this is something else. Makes me cry with Joy. T.r.
This brings a big smile to my face. It’s obvious that Mr Cohen is enjoying himself very much!
I remember this song from his first album in the 60's. It must be his most under-rated song.
A timeless poem about the human experience of love and intimacy.
I am so surprised that it isn't covered by other performers. It has so much potential for this.
how beautiful ty for the clip wrongbutton!
What a stunning clip...
Wow I didn't know Cohen was able so sing such high tones back in '06. It sounded wonderful, he was the best singer on that stage. It's a shame that his solo wasn't longer.
The best. He could sing very well untill the end of his life.
Thank you Canada for having given us, among others, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young and the Cowboy Junkies...
My pleasure! Glad you have enjoyed the video.
Why does Leonard have his young voice here?! And at his concerts he does have his deep, old voice!
There are tears in my eyes! Thank you
That video is so touching, a great performance of an amazing song. Thanks for posting :)
Thank you for posting this!
I feel like I was there.
He may look old and may not remember the words, but he sounds goddamn wonderful! I thought that his voice had been damaged irreparably in the late 80s/early 90s, but it certainly doesn't seem to be the case.
And this is what makes him a great performer: the other two just make a tribute to him and cover the song as it is, but Cohen actually tries to interpret the song in a new way!
What a rare treat.
just fantastic, so real and natural, thanks
I can't believe i didn't know this was happening :( I may have missed my only chance to see him live.
Thank you thank you thank you, for posting this... I've the biggest smile on my face right now, that was truly amazing, and didn't he just grab it by the balls and go for it... oh I'll be 'sharing' this...
did I say thanks?!?! :)~~~
Esto es inolvidable
Thank you so much for posting this uplifting and touching video. My life, like that of so many others has been changed forever by the insight, wry wit and sensuality of Leonard Cohen.
What a great clip. Love to have been there.
loved it.thank you very much.
profound song. never heard of this guy. what was i missing
i cant believe i missed this.
Fantástico, como se divierten
See you Lenny In Dublin in June. A lifetime dream.
I've been a fan of his since '71 (in Australia :), I was 16 when I was turned on to him... :)~~
omg omg omg.
thank you Leonard.
I love this
Oh my .... go Lenny, just go Lenny.
That's a lot of talent around that one microphone. A stunt that worked, there's another mic for the chorus, which is out of view of the camera.
Even Greater. When he goes for good this should be played at his wake.
It's a bit tragic to see him growing old. Partically because I missed almost whole of his career. :-)
He is a true genius.
Rest in peace
Almost there! 3 days to go. Lenny welcome to Ireland.
Proof of the existence of God
This has always been a fav vid I wonder if you guys gave him the urge to do concerts again
RIP maestro
An amazing spontaneous performance.
Yes, it will be played many times in his memory, sometime in the far future, hopefully.
But it will not be at a wake. He's Jewish.
thank you, great quality video too. Who are the 'others' on stage with LC? Wish i had been there, a very special moment...
The info you’re looking for is in the description
Steve Page from The Barenaked Ladies doing the harmony, sweet.
My new fav video, can anyone tell me about the group singing with Leonard. Love the way the guitarist is getting right into it.
It’s in the description
I don't know who are playing the instruments but the singers are Steven Page formerly of the BareNaked Ladies and Ron Sexsmith. The lady who sings near the end is Leoanrd's girlfriend.
Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo on guitar.
@@pbcanuckrun Incorrect. It was Terry Gowan (of Gowan)
Cohen shows the young guys how to do it ..
Where is it? And how come you are so lucky?
It is very good guys, seen him in Amsterdam july 12th and gonna see him again in Rotterdam in november.See you there!!!!
what was all that in aid of then?? Who are the other two blokes? Great little gem of a clip.
i miss
my little darlin
seriously though. what is with the guitar player LOL He seems dangerously over excited. It would be awesome to be up there with leonard but I don't think i would be leaping around like pete townshend. I love the spontaneity of it. the guy from barenaked ladies is totally baked. permasmile.
thanks for posting. it is a great moment to have footage of
When he goes for good? lol. Is he partly or perhaps temporarily gone? Looks pretty lively to me.
no, he does. he says "what is it?" very audibly. It's an old song, and he hasn't performed it in years. I'm sure artistically and personally he's moved past Marianne as well, so why should he remember the lyrics?
The same thing happens with all geniuses. Bob Dylan forgot he wrote Love Is Just a Four Letter Word when he heard Joan Baez sing it on the radio. She had to remind him. It isn't ridiculous at all.
and when?
awesome version but it looks like the guitar player's having a little too much fun! :-D
1. This sounds horrible.
2. Leonard looks like he'd rather be anywhere on Earth other than there.
Was Leonard tricked into doing this??? Ughh. Thumbs down.
Why is he smiling so much then?
He was doing this for fun and enjoyed it.
