    What a kind gentleman he was. It is to bad that the famous billionaires of today fall very short in his footsteps.

    Thank you, Mr. Mellon. I have had tremendous pleasure enjoying the benefits of your family's largesse. Since coming to the US in 1976, I have had tremendous pleasure in enjoying the fruits of your family's generosity. I deliberately chose to spend my sixty-fifth (65th) birthday in the company of the works that your family donated to the country and I came to realize that patriotism is not only waving the flag or fighting in defensive wars but also making contributions as your family has done. My greatest pleasure is looking at great pictures, especially those that I grew up enjoying in our English Reader books that I enjoyed reading as a child in the British West Indies. Standing in front of Constable's
    'Wivenhoe Park, Essex, 1816' was an earth-shattering experience. I often drive the 200+ miles from NYC to Washington DC to bask in the pleasure of the collection at the National Gallery and I secretly express my gratitude to your father, you, and your sister for the generosity of your gift. I have also visited the Yale Center for British Art and I now recognize the true meaning of patriotism. As an artist, it is my determined intent to leave a legacy to this country of my adoption in gratitude for the relatively comfortable life that I have enjoyed. Thanks a million for leading the way.

    This doc is so beautifuly done. Paul Mellon also appears to have had a poet's talent with words. Love the final pic of him smiling as the horse nuzzles him; seems to fit Mellon's personality perfectly.

    The utter personification of - not just good 'old money' but class, elegance, sophistication; and the humility to recognize and shun the enemy that befalls many men as himself: the thirst for power!

    I am 64 years young but truely getting old. With all my Grandparents and both parents deceased I yearn now for the past, learned at the knee of my Grandmother. I listend intently about what constitutes as desired attributes for a young lady, good tastse, good manners and tolerance of all. From my father I learnt how to appropriately dress for every occasion and to be a seeker, of knowledge and experience. All my family have always looked to the past for its inspiration. I know I was blessed to have been given such a legacy. How I loved this documentary. For me it was like finding again and putting on a favourite winter coat. Comfortable, familiar and a cosy barrier against the metophorical cold and harsh realities of today. Although my latter ancestry cannot claim the wealth and privilege of the Mellon dynasty my Grandmothers mantra of 'Class is always dependent upon character and never wealth' is so true. Thank you so much for this upload. It was a chance to reflect upon and dream about once again that elusive Golden Age.

      @@fredarcher7264thank you. I am about watch it again. Like my favourite books I return to them and enjoy them again and again . I have queues of books to read. I am always rereading . I know I need to read on and I do slowly. I am 78 and unwell. It reminds me of when I first went to University. When I entered the library I was so in awe. I stood there and how I wished I could have read all those books. My heart sank . I was 39, I knew I couldn’t. I am still buying but really sad. It is so much easier to watch biographies etc on utube. Yet there is nothing better than opening a new/ second hand book. There is nothing you can do to prevent old age. My last dearest has gone. Wow! This biography displays power combined with good taste at their best. Son of a wealthy powerhouse, Paul Mellon has composed a life story that unfolds a treasure house of memories at a level no one could ever dream of competing with no matter how long he might live. (Or even how rich he might be.)
    A whole philosophy of life emerges from his own experience that could teach any viewer something about the ideal way to enjoy and value life.

    Andrew had another love, lost, Lillian. Slain on her way home from her piano concert, by her carriage driver who disappeared immediately after, they never found him. She was Andrew's father's executive secretary too, the old Judge. I found her grave, Ohio. She had two children, Thomas, and Bera, from William I heard his name was, a cousin of Andrew, from the other brother of the Judge who came over here with him, from Ireland. I can find nothing about this other brother, but someday I will. Thomas is buried in Truckee, and Bera, I found her too, I think she was buried near her mother/Ohio. My icon here is my mother Barbara from Thomas & Vesta. Barbara told me about the other brother, her grandfather William I think she said was his name-buried in Texas. One of her kids is an artist, and one a horsewoman, and one a ballet dancer. Runs in the family. God bless this dear family!

    Paul Mellon himself was not a robber baron. Inherited a lot of money from his father, said to hell with banking, I'll do what I want with my life. I'd do the same if I had that much money. I feel the same way about the aesthetic quality of horse racing. Indeed, no thoroughbred embodied the horse as a work of art more so than Mellon's legendary homebred Mill Reef.

    Never think life is easy for the horse on your grotesquely mass overpopulated planet,
    no place on our planet without plastic shreds,
    Man, trying to mold today's non-Mellon, 2020 globe;
    if truly admired, loved, cared to be caretaker of a horse today,
    invest in acreage and let groups roam and run, FREE.
    Provide them safe harbor from Man and Woman, offspring.

    Really interesting how his second wife, Bunny, is barely included and shown just once. They were married for 50 years. She was a terrible spendthrift and went through his money like water. Only after seeing this did it occur to me that Paul Mellon must have been bothered by that. He was a man of simple tastes -- on a huge scale -- but considering the resources that were available to him, he seems to have been a sweet and gentle man. Fun fact: Over the course of his marriage to Bunny, he had a lot of mistresses. His longest term mistress was a beautiful tall redhead from his same social class. Periodically, she'd vist jewelry stores like Cartier and ask to try on something. The salespeople all knew she was Mellon's mistress. Later, Paul Mellon would go to Cartier's to buy something for his wife, supposedly. One of the salespeople would show him the other piece and say "This has also been admired." And he'd buy it for his mistress.
