I was eleven years old in a Sussex boarding school. Woke up at 2am with windows smashing and the most almighty howling wind. At daybreak the place was unrecognisable. A forested hillside beside the school was now a field. It took three days before we were sent home for two weeks. No electricity, no fresh food and (best of all) no teachers! You can still see the extent of the changes on the land there today. I'll never forget it. Great video...
I remember the storm in east anglia. I was 7 years old. I was woken by an oak tree being torn down a few doors up the road, I remember seeing the torch light of the next door neighboor as he investigated. The wind was absolutely screaming around the house, a branch blew from the tree opposite, knocking the fence at the front of the house flat. School was only cancelled half way through the day, despite the fact most people that had made it there had come through half wreaked countryside.
wow great footage ! in the days of no mobile phones, this must be only one of a few films of the destruction. i was 14 at the time living in braintree essex, was one of the very few times that school was closed because of the weather.never forget how trees were twisted and snapped in half halfway up their trunks.roads were covered in tiles, power lines hanging and arcing blue sparks just wish we had taken some pictures
I cannot believe this..I too went out the day following the storm with my dad's video camera. My route, as I lived in Bletchingley, was up white hill to Caterham, the back lanes and back down to Pendell / Big & Little Common lane. Later I went along to Tilburstow hill..still have this on tape must get round to converting onto dvd/pc format! Thanks really made the hairs on the back of my neck stick up.
I was 5 at the time, but I can still remember watching our neighbour's greenhouse take off like a spinning top and at school we were taken one at a time by teaches across the playground to where our parents were waiting because the wind was so strong it was blowing us over!
named my you tube profile after it.we still have some trees still lying down on there side in our local park in brookwood nr woking surrey.im glad they are still there as a reminder although i dont think any of us will forget.by the way 25 years this year
Being born and bred in Redhill, it's just as interesting to see how much the town has changed in 20 -odd years as well as the devastation from the storm. I'd forgotten about Surrey Value timber...
I was 16 and slept through the whole thing (always been a heavy sleeper.) I was living in Peacehaven East Sussex at the time, we lost a few tiles and our greenhouse was found 7 doors up but other than that we were lucky. The caravan/park homes site up on the hill on the Highway got hit bad! Parts of it were found in Lewes some 7miles away in-land. I remember stories of the Council paying anyone with a chainsaw £100 a day to go round clearing the roads. So many old trees I used to climb were gone
I was living in Norwich at the time, and I slept through the whole thing! (I was 3 years old so it was kinda expected) - next morning I woke up to our bedroom window blown in and glass all over the floor. My dad went to work on the Eastern Counties Mini-Line buses and was the first out at 6am cos everyone was too scared to start their shift! We had no trees in our cul-de-sac but down the end of our street, a big tree fell over onto Drayton Road near the park which caused chaos!
This day, i woke up after sleeping through it all (ggrrrrrr.... gutted) to find our summerhouse was in the next door neighbours garden, who we didn't get on with. :) Can we have our summerhouse back please. lol. I was about 7 too. Silverhill, Hastings.
yeah i remember it all thare was even lighting and thunder and wind was verry bad i think this winter was bad. i remember bonfire night few weeks after the storm everyone had big bonfires becues of all the rubish and trees i will never ferget it ,in the 80s you allways got summers and thunderstorms at night but its just not the same no more..
I slept through the bloody thing. I got up next morning, did the usual and left for work. Nobody about. Earls Court Tube was shut. It was like one of those apocalypse movies. No traffic. Just a few leaves on the road so I started walking, all the way to Monument. It wasnt till I got to the Embankment that I saw someone on foot and asked what the fuck was going on! I kept walking to my work in the City. That was locked too. So I walked home again. Weirdest day of my life!!!!!
Thanks for the comment. We were driving a Talbot Alpine. The original soundtrack was quite boring, consisting mainly of Radio Mercury. It really didn't make for interesting listening. Cheers John
I was working at a breakers yard at the time. Thought to myself wahey! No work today but I was wrong, the bloke who gave me a lift turned up some 3 hours late but we made it in. The wind had blown over the crane and the car piles were all leaning on eachother. The school got hit bad in Newhaven, Tideway as it was then, I now live right behind the new building uh oh! The school wasnt replaced because of that though, a fire saw to that many years later. Still always windy up there!
Haha lookin at all the old cars made me laugh. what car were you driving and you should put it up without the music btw i love jimmy hendrix but hearin the original would be cool.
I have had problems with copyright even with background music which I wasn't specifically recording. Just complain (using the youtube process) on the grounds you aren't doing it for money, wait a month and the chances are the copyright holder won't object and your original will be restored.
Nope, was definitely this storm. But my memory is not the night of the storm, perhaps it was the day after the storm. I can remember my dad telling me in the car about the actor Gordon Kay being injured by a slate that blew off a roof.
Im sorry to kin d of ruin your memory of this storm but happened at night. I have a feeling you are thinking about 1990 when we had some really severe wide scale hurricane strength winds, and it all happened during the daytime too :-)

Well done. Very personal footage of something I remember so well it still scares the shit out of me to think about it today.

I was on a trawler out in the North sea when that came across and it hit us full force, it was fun to say the least
Thanks very much.
