Volker's guitar playing is one thing that makes guitar instructors going nuts. Just look at his strange two and three finger-technique on the fretboard. You won't ever be taught that by anyone, it's simply "autodidactism". And it works perfectly...
No overdubs, no tracks being recorded separetely. Just a bunch of great musicians playing in real time... I've already done transcriptions of Klaus Doldinger's sax solos for my guitar, just wonderful!
To summarize this under 'Krautrock' is ridiculous. This is nearly an Jazzrock-European-All-Star-Band. I can identify Klaus Doldinger (sax), Wolfgang Schmid (bass), Volker Kriegel (lead git), Alexis Korner (rythm git), Curt Cress and Pete York (drums), Jonny Griffin (sax), Brian Auger (organ), Kristian Schultze (keys). Seems to be a filmed at the recording session of the first jubilee album.
Ist a Pity that such concerts Will Never Happen again. So many died, and only very few still have the Fire.. Like Brian Auger, Pete York, or Wolfgang Schmid.
Oh, no need, I already have the 'Works & Passion' box set. Brian Auger, Pete York, Volker, Brian Auger and Alexis Korner (I forget the second sax player's name) were not regular members, this was a one off for that album. It's still fantastic though, isn't it?
Definately one of greatly overlooked bands i was at the Park West in chicsgo and i ran into the guys from Jam Productions and they asked me who i'd like to see and i said get Passport in here and they'll sell out the house i was wrong they played 2 shows and sold them both out i got to meet Klaus and the band and he invited me to come visit him in Germany i wish i would have went but alas no dough keep it going on Klaus
Amazing footage! There is a name for such a fluid drum "battle" but I forgot the name. Also a fine way to see the difference between matched grip and traditional grip when they go over the toms.
Hamburger Musikhalle. Schlagzeug Curt Cress & Pete York. Gitarre (Solo) Volker Kriegel.
This was the special guest band for Doldinger's jubilee. Passport plus Brian Auger, Pete York, Johnny Griffin and Alexis Korner. They gave exactly three concerts. I visited the one in Frankfurt. The one in Duesseldorf was recorded on vinyl, which of course I have.
It's not Krautrock: though it has one of Krautrock's finest bassists (Lothar Meid) here and saxist Olaf Kubler, both involved in Amon Duul2- seminal Krautband. This is fusion though and a lot like most other bands of this genre from all over the world. Krautrock was a reinvention of German rock starting from scratch and trying to avoid sounding US or UK. This was big part of what put Kraut in a league of its own
This is fusion at it's classiest. Better than Chicago and B,S and T put together! Wish I would have seen Doldinger and Company live in the 70s. Awesome.
+Doug Rea I saw him about 1975 in Düsseldorf, Germany and it was not only his fascinating music but also his (and the bands) attitude. After about 2 1/2 hours of live music they wanted to call it quits but the crowed did not stop clapping their hands. So he said:"OK, we like to play for you some more just give us 10 mins to refresh". And they played another hour after that.
they are happy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I:)thats most important . I like when Volker begin solo and other guitarist follow him with cigar(like bank officer dressed) - I think this music is swiiiiiiiiingiiiiiiiiin.....mandagora is also swingin also one of best improvisations
I like German Prog Rock as well as British Prog Rock. You probably don't see this as "Krautrock", I can understand that & ironically I was thinking something similar to you when viewing this, & have wondered about the term in the past. Does it describe Just Prog Rock or ANY form of Rock music from Germany?
Für mich war und ist das JazzROCK. Das hatte Kopf und Eier!
Great jazz rock! Doldinger is one of the unsung heroes of the genre.
2:23 The identical drumming leading back into the groove. wow.
It's unbelievable!
Volker's guitar playing is one thing that makes guitar instructors going nuts. Just look at his strange two and three finger-technique on the fretboard. You won't ever be taught that by anyone, it's simply "autodidactism". And it works perfectly...
Damn, you mae me look again... That is excactly how I play. Who ever taught anything to Django anyway haha!
@@moussetache1815 Absolutely d'accord, who cares about the why and how to. By the end, only music matters.
No overdubs, no tracks being recorded separetely. Just a bunch of great musicians playing in real time...
I've already done transcriptions of Klaus Doldinger's sax solos for my guitar, just wonderful!
Wahnsinn! Ein Freude zum Zuhören und zum Zuschauen!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍

It's performances like these that are the reason why I love jazz fusion so much! Bravo!
That drum break was brilliant! To play that fill at the end without flamming takes real precision.
Ultracool!
Drummers are Pete York (Ex-Spencer Davis Group, now sometimes with Helge Schneider) and Curt Cress, one of the best german drummers.
That drum (double)solo segment makes me happy.
This has to have some of the tightest drumming of all time... Bravo!
Hey man your channel is the one that turned me onto passport! Thanks for your content!
Nein
I keep coming back to this, especially to watch the two drummers Kurt and Pete. solid, man, solid. Love Passport!
Ole Rocker I've been coming back to this too, over and over for almost the 10 years it's been up. Everything about this gets me.
2x live gesehen, immer ein Erlebnis.
I watch this video 3 times a day , each day.
that has to be one of the best drumming duets i have ever heard !! love it !!
splendid Performance... Curt Cress and Pete York really nailed it... :-)
Nice to see the different styles of Cress and York, competing and completing each other. Love this!
Cress was the freshman under the order odf Pete.
Ist a Pity that such concerts Will Never Happen again. So many died, and only very few still have the Fire.. Like Brian Auger, Pete York, or Wolfgang Schmid.
I had NO idea that Volker Kriegel had played in Passport. Damned fine guitarist!
synth on a plinth hes playing a framus guitar ..which is very cool
+snuffelsuf Never heard of that brand, but what a blazing solo! Pete York and Curt Cress taking turns soloing was cool, too!
I am suprise too. But V. Kriegel is not a really Passport-Member .... see "Doldinger Jubilee" records.

The sax player´s name is Johnny Griffin
Kurt Kress and Pete York are one of the most spectucuarl drummers in the world.
Right on. I agree
They are very tight, and know how to keep it short. Is that the same Pete York who was with Spencer Davis Group?
@@stephenhowes8937 Yes!
@@jurgenburberg1514 Thanks, I always wanted to check out early Passport! Is Infinity Machine good?
Oh, no. They're two!
To me this video sums up what the 70s was about! Great stuff!
always loved the way those two drummers played together and the sound of the whole band :D
Unbelievable that music like this was possible in Germany. Times are gone!!!
Definately one of greatly overlooked bands i was at the Park West in chicsgo and i ran into the guys from Jam Productions and they asked me who i'd like to see and i said get Passport in here and they'll sell out the house i was wrong they played 2 shows and sold them both out i got to meet Klaus and the band and he invited me to come visit him in Germany i wish i would have went but alas no dough keep it going on Klaus
what a exciting band...Klaus Doldinger is amazing
Amazing Intro and a fantastic contemporary document.
2023. 50 years ago now!
Amazing footage! There is a name for such a fluid drum "battle" but I forgot the name. Also a fine way to see the difference between matched grip and traditional grip when they go over the toms.
Anybody catch where Pete York imitates Cut Cress' body language? One of the funnier parts of that solo. 02:07
Und Alexis Korner mit ner Kippe, herrlich !
I can hear and feel some Gato Barbieri influences straight away on this one, awesome

1:30 That Alexis Korner back there on the white Strat?
Yep!
Amazing musicianship.
The drumming part is insane!!!!
Monster musician. True fusion, prog & multiple genres
Those rickenbaker basses have such a unique growl to them.
Curt Cress and Pete York drumoff. fucking insane!!!
curt cress is kick ass drums i love passport

thank the most high for allowing me to see this
Doldinger, the studio album this tune is on is really good.
The first Passport LP.
Amazing!
passport recorded amazing fusion albums from 1970 through the end of the decade.
1:30 Albert Hammond Jr. from The Strokes

Simply great!
Musicianship lvl to the max.Amazing stuff.

Doug Rea i love klaus doldinger and the exciting talent he allways has..

+phaidros52 That is quite a story! Thanks for sharing that.
+phaidros52 THAT's how a person becomes a PERFORMER.

Far out. Pete York on drums. I am sure that is Alexis Korner.

Great car chase tune drumming is tighter than a nuns chuff
Forever
Is that Curt Cress (also ex Triumvirat) drumming in the yellow shirt? It would also have been great to see him drum-duet with Hans Bathelt!!
Yes, he is. :)
Ich hatte das Auto dazu.....VW Scirocco....😀
@beamir72 Capusotto hace docencia musical! Gracias.
Sorry, I was checking out other videos. But yeah, Jazz Rock is a good descriptive term as they remind me a lot of Chicago (Transit Authority).
Besides Volker on guitar who is the other guitarist with The Strat behind him? Looks like Buzzy Feiten.
Alexis Corner!
they are happy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I:)thats most important . I like when Volker begin solo and other guitarist follow him with cigar(like bank officer dressed) - I think this music is swiiiiiiiiingiiiiiiiiin.....mandagora is also swingin also one of best improvisations
All I can say is Pete & Curt are tight!!!! Amazing speed!!!!

Is that Kriegel on guitar?
