    Hey, this video was very useful! I've even experimented a bit, and discovered that instead of drilling a hole on the ground, you could use a *work point*, and drive it along the path as well. I've discovered this after trying to make a complex rotation-translation motion along a curved surface, where a drilled hole driving along the curved-surface path didn't behave as one would hope.

    I have been playing around with this and I have managed to get a single work point to drive several components along a path "towing" them, but you are correct in that Inventor gets a bit glitchy when handling the constraints under certain conditions: Moving too fast, pushing not pulling, rads too tight. Should be fine for the four items moving along that track though. It didn't work for what I wanted but it was good to learn new tricks. What I really wanted to simulate was a segmented sheet of thin material being driven off a reel. Perhaps there is a different trick I could use for that?

    I just have to accept the fact that with Inventor you can do animation, but with smoke and mirror kind of skills. Thank you!

    Thanks Rusty, I never tried that feature before. Also, how did you created the wooden tracks. Did you do it as an assembly?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Once I try to use the transitional constraint to constrain the 'work cylinder' to the path, it doesn't use the whole path. It only uses one section of it (either one of the parts of a circle, or a straight section, wherever I click) and once I've constrained it to that section, the train is unable to move off it, though it can move around on it. I've tried moving my mouse all over the rail to make sure that i'm not just missing the part to click on. I can't quite see what you did in the video because you've zoomed in. Any ideas?

    When you set up the animation parameter you got a "timeline over lap" error I am getting that same error but just canceling out is not working. How do you get around that?

    Hi Rusty. Is it possible to constrain a box with two fixing points to a 3D path so it moves parallel to the track? I've used this feature many times recently much to the delight of the sales team. Thank you.

    • @3DAllDayEveryDay

      I believe it is a surface patch. Just sketch a circle and use the surface patch to create a "circular plane".

    Can you constrain the wheels to the track in such a way that they rotate as the train moves along the track?

    • @adamgardner5113
      @adamgardner5113 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes... You would edit the wave file and and make the tracks round with concentric constraints

  • @logan5018

    @RustyBelcher I'm trying to get a train engine to move on the track and everything was working fine up until I had to do the animation in the assembly. once I entered all the info for animating the parameter, it gives me the message: "The specified value could not be applied. Please enter a different value" ive tried changing all the values but I get the same value. do you know how to fix this.

      Without seeing the assembly, it is hard to determine the issue. It is probably having problems with a constraint or a sharp curve in the path. Try animating the train a short distance to make sure it is working, then increase the distance incrementally until you reach the problem point.
      At some point you will have to adjust the path or the constraints to account for the issue. The fewer constraints the better. Hope it works out.

    How can I select a whole path, when i tried to make the same path and make a rectangular pattern, it only selected a line segment, not the whole path. Some help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @3DAllDayEveryDay
      @3DAllDayEveryDay  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Benjamin Miller It is important that the path have rounded corners that are tangent to each linear segment. You will have trouble if your path has sharp corners. (Not sure if this helps)

    • @benjaminmiller5
      @benjaminmiller5 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried to make a rectancular base of your path, then I felted the corners to make them round. I may have made an offset of that sketch for the center and inner edge of the path. I have tried to make a new figure, but it still won't cooperate. However, when I made it, and put it an assembly file, It showed up as purple, not black as it does on yours. Thank you for your help.

      Never mind , today i finished constraining the train to the hole, and I got the hole to move along a path in the shape of a slot (it looks like a rectangle with two semicircles at the ends). However, now I have the issue that the angle that the train is in when it travels is not aligned with the path. I have tried to select the edge of the track but it only allows one side, not all.

    I am in a bit of a dilemma. I'm trying to use this technique to drive my custom car along a figure eight track that goes above itself and then under sort of like an overpass but infinite so it keeps going around. I constrained my car to the work point but it does not go up and down the ramp like I want it to. Instead it follows the figure eight path at the same level it started from so at some points it is floating. Please give me some tips on how to fix this any help would be very much appreciated.

    • @3DAllDayEveryDay
      @3DAllDayEveryDay  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Deathstar you will have to generate a 3d path between the figure eight sketch and the surfaces that make up the track and overpass. That will be tricky, and might require you the develop the 3d sketch in multiple segments. Once you have that, you can constrain the work Point. Similar to the final example in this video. I hope this helps.

    • @Chickawah
      @Chickawah 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rusty Belcher You misunderstand I have already created a 3D sketch and made a path to pattern my work point. When I go into inventor studio in the ipt the point successfully goes along the path exactly like I want it to. But the problem I am having is in my iam my car is only following the path on the horizontal plane and not the vertical plane. It is hovering over the point so as the point is going underneath the overpass of the figure eight the car is moving above it but still with it if that make sense.

    • @3DAllDayEveryDay
      @3DAllDayEveryDay  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Deathstar ok. You will have to create some kind of constraint between the car and the track. Or develop additional 3d sketches to serve as the "rails" of the track. Then constrain the car to the rails. Again, it's tricky. When you get it, let me know. I would love to see the results.

    • @3DAllDayEveryDay
      @3DAllDayEveryDay  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rob Floto
      You would have to build the wheels so they are constrained with a parametric angular value. All wheels would have to use the same parametric value. You could then make that parameter a favorite and animate it similar to the process outlined in this video. That would require a lot of work but it is possible.

    Edward
    I believe so. You might have to send two "dummy" parts down the rails and constrain the box to each of those. There should be a couple of ways to make this work. I did a video about a box going down a spiral conveyor a while ago. I believe I used a process similar to the animated sweep video I posted a few weeks ago. Just a thought. th-cam.com/video/hpzD3gtp67o/w-d-xo.html
