So, Aubrey is externalizing her feelings, while Basil internalizes his. It could also be a great example of how depression doesn’t always look the same.
@@shipperina2213 I was choosing my words to avoid suggesting too many spoilers, while also making sure my second sentence was still applicable (i.e., you don’t need trauma to be depressed).
@@ladynoluck I understood, but saying trauma etc wouldn’t have spoiled anything. Since we already know the basics of what’s happened and that they’ve obviously changed bc they all were indeed traumatized by it.
@@theSkin_of_a_Killer_Bella Based on the whole story, it still felt too spoilery and kinda inaccurate to equate them, so I chose this wording, which isn’t inaccurate or overly suggestive in any way. Nothing wrong with being careful for anyone who doesn’t know the whole story yet.
@@ladynoluck I mean having someone you know die in itself is traumatic and we already know that Mari died, so I don't think that would have been considered a spoiler
I'm really glad you brought up the mom's behavior; something always bothered me about her, but I could never quite put a finger on why. Now that you mention the potential manipulation through guilt and people pleasing combined with Hero's mild nature, overachiever personality, how he hesitates to ask if he can go over to Sunny's house, his desire to soothe her hurt feelings by getting her a gift, and also Kel's attempts to circumvent her displeasure at taking so long with errands by distracting her with Sunny's presence, I could see it being the case. I wonder if this is why Hero is my favorite character out of the four...
me too its so annoying, and barely even letting him go see an old friend who's about to move away? when she's literally gonna have him for like a month or more??
My favorite bit of symbolism in this game is the emotion chart and how it relates to the real world. After Mari’s death, each character had their own way of moving on, and this is where the emotion chart takes on new meaning. Aubrey represents angry, Kel represents happy, Hero represents sad and Sunny represents neutral. Basil doesn’t show up on the emotion chart, but there’s also an emotion that doesn’t show up, so it’s easy to place him.
One thing that I saw pointed out In a comment from somewhere was that basil gave sunny the photo album which has a lot of sentimental value before he knew that sunny was moving and then the very next day he runs off to a secluded lake without telling anyone when he can't even swim I think that basil was going to drown himself when the hooligans showed up and then he panicked and shut down
Oooh, I never thought about that, but possible guilt for thinking he was caught in the act might explain why he reacted so strongly despite the Hooligans supposedly not doing anything to him. It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase 'drowning your sorrows'.
Hm. Hadn't really considered. Not out of the question for sure. At this point, he's likely convinced Sunny's afraid of him for what they did- though he's also still bouncing back and forth with his Something justification. He might've already been having an episode- arguing whether he should or not- when the hooligans even got there. Lots of possibilities...
Based on the little twirl Charlene does after officially introducing herself, I always assumed she was just a big boned young lady. She still likes girly things, but she often acts as the muscle in the Hooligans (like Vance). Charlie is just her nickname, as she doesn't seem to hate being called either Charlie or Charlene. And the reason why she looks the way she does in Headspace is because Sunny remembered her as a REALLY TALL, shy young lady. So tall in fact that he could never see her face, which is why it's constantly covered. This was just my interpretation, though, as conversations around gender and stuff confuse me to this day. And I've been trying to understand since high school.
that was my interpretation too, although I thought that Kel was assuming her name was charlie cause she looked kinda masculine. But yeah, Sunny presumably didn't know her well so after 4 years his memory of her has just become "really tall girl".
as a trans dude, i thought the same. admittedly i didnt really understand what she was trying to say with the trans discussion regarding her there, because she didnt come across to me as someone that might be trans. but i dont really like assuming one way or another. when it comes to fictional characters or real people, i always go off the information i am given and nothing else. in terms of pronouns, i will default to they/them unless i am told something different, and if i am, i change it. same thing with names. use what im told and change it if im informed that it is now something else. i believe its better to use explict information instead of just assuming.
Maybe it's only me but it looks like you're missing out a lot on Kel's mental state. Sure, he is always in high spirits but that's the point: his family, and even some people in the game, don't even give him enough recognition. He's always "there" and nothing more. It's like not having him in their family wouldn't change much and that's saying a lot. Being ignored is basically his life. :/
As somebody who is the "Kel" of the family, I find that a lot of reactors don't pick up on his state but I definitely did. My sibling was the perfect "gifted" child and people always talk about they must have so much stress and pressure but just assume I'm this happy-go-lucky always smiling person. But I'm really just always ignored and all my emotions and depression/anxieties are bottled up because of that.
@@ash.613 the reason i love the kels out there. theyre always there for you because theyre able to be externally happy. but then you forget about it if theyre internally sad. makes me wanna give kel + kels a big hug
This is a bit long He's very similar to me but instead of sports replace it with arts... He is me!! Even my sibling are also in med school and I guess he's also an asian? Personally, even when my family are facing troubles like financial, divorced, moving away, unable to do the things they love etc... How do I say this... When you are mentally healthy, you realized that a lot of bad things that happened to you are not intentionally. Even when harsh words are spoken you'll hear the true meaning in their heart even if their words hurt you. And you also cope with negative feeling fast and well, you learn how to let things go. I'm a bit more carefree than him tho... and calmer I hope lol. But again he's still young so he doesn't have enough experienced dealing with hurted people. In my eyes I think his mental state are fine, you can absolutely lives well even with some wounds and scars on your heart. Nobody lives without problems and tears. It's important to recognised the importance of mental health but don't take all the problems too seriously/personal. If you think you are wounded and wronged by others your mental health will follow your thoughts! It's one thing to examine yourself and heal. But when you let your negative thoughts built up and continue to feed into the idea that you are 'wronged' by others or even ignore problems instead of solving/talking about it your mental health will start going down. While I'm not really a positive person I try to think objectively without bias, I happen to learn and heal fast so I gained a lot on how to deal with anger or sadness. I think Kel kinda like me ;3 we also have sensitive moments but we know when or when not to take ourselves too seriously. Some people (like me!) Are really not hiding or ignoring anythings... well not some serious stuff anyway 😂. Though it's a little bit funny when char like me are called 'flat' or 'shallow' or sometimes even have theories about how every happy char are hiding deep dark bottled up feeling... well some of them are I'm sure! But some people are just that good at managimg their emotions guyyss!
(For Kel's mom) It's still not ok to act like that toward your kids tho, while I mention that it's ok to live with scars and wounds It's still better to not be hurt. Especially from someone close to you
Oh :( I'm sorry it didn't go well for you. I hope that with time they can learn to accept your sexuality, and that that time comes soon! Please stay safe;
hate to hear that happen but hey it's not all down you took the courage that not much people can muster up. Don't change for anyone even your parents, be yourself as you will never please everyone. Hopefully they will come to understand soon at least all love ❤
Oh I'm so sorry. Stuff like coming out of the closet can be a big change for parents at first, but I'm sure after a while they'll grow to accept you. Just hang in there.
Something I find interesting to note that really stood out strongly to me when I first played was how the knife, in Sunny's mind, especially when facing his phobias, acts sort of like a security blanket. It isn't needed in the interactions with the phobias, but he always has to pick it up before confronting them. I think this is somewhat a representation of him entering the mentality he has while dreaming, which arguably shows that his escapism isn't necessarily all negative given, in this instance, it empowers him to save Basil, but that doesn't change that the knife definitely seems to give Sunny some sense of...power? Comfort? Safety? I'm not sure exactly. Empowerment may not be the right word, but it feels close... I bring this up because in a previous video I commented that the fact that Sunny has trouble disentangling the real world from his dream world and the implicit dangers in that, mainly in what he does in the dream world. However, while i do think it is correct to say that letting Sunny walk around with a knife is dangerous, it also feels...bad, I guess, to take away that sense of security if indeed that is what the knife provides. This may be because my primary interest lies in ASD, and parents of children on the spectrum often come in asking to "fix" their children's stimming (repetitive behaviors that essentially act as self soothing, thinking humming to yourself, for example). While these behaviors may be annoying to the parents, preventing the child from doing them may be distressing to the child, and the question becomes, "is this behavior hindering the client's ability to function, and is there a less extreme solution". So I guess I'm kind of in that headspace where I want to try to find a way that Sunny can keep whatever benefits the knife gives him psychologically while avoiding the dangers it presents (once Sunny improves, of course, the situation becomes different and it may be safe to allow him to have the knife, but that likely won't be for a while). My first thought instantly goes to toy knife, or something else that can reasonably substitute for the knife. Is Sunny able to equip any weapons in his dreams that aren't knives? I suppose that could be one angle we could take, swapping out the knife for some other "weapon". I mean, Kel uses a ball as a weapon, and Aubrey uses a stuffed animal! Haha. Yeah, games like this really get my brain going. I haven't been able to do a lot of practical work since the pandemic started, so its nice to get these thought exercises in.
3 days late, but I’d like to add that Sunny in the dream world (who takes the role of Omori) *can’t* equip any weapon besides the knife. He’s the only character in the game that’s stuck with their starting weapon, and the knife actually corrodes more every time you visit the dream world. Could be totally wrong but if I remember right it becomes less effective as well in combat, and essentially goes from a sharp clean blade to a blunt instrument, stained and rusty.
The knife is essential in his daydreams, such as the recycultists quest, he has to pick up the knife. That does seem to be the case. *Edit: change of wording, only realized that you're probably a professional on my second read
Check it out! every one of the gang has a little windmill in front of their house, each one a different color, you can see them at the old hangout spot too!
if it helps with the pepper spray situation, that is 6 late-teenagers who were absolutely going to beat up sunny and kel, there's no way to win without the pepper spray and it was definitely them that started the fight
I mean, you -can- win with like 10-20 first aid kits and a whole lot of slow, plodding attacks from Kel, but at that point it's almost as much a secret scene as this one is. (Or beating Aubrey the first time without Sunny ever attacking with the knife by just using Kel and Kel alone to attack)
@@sleepylad951 Nah, you can defeat them without the pepper spray. They do become stronger by attacking multiple times and doing a few all-out attacks, but they're not unbeatable.
@@sleepylad951 They're beatable but I'm pretty sure at a certain point you need to use encouragement boosted focus attacks from Sunny to break past their defence
As Kel said... After their fight he was a bit more closed off. And of course, Hero has visited his family more often than he has even heard of Sunny. Still, i hope they, in the future (off screen), can talk about it and become closer again.
It's natural for someone to tunnel vision someone they don't get to see anywhere near as often. So, you are in college, and you come home yearly to spend a whole summer with your parents and your siblings. But suddenly, this one particular year, you come home, and see a childhood friend you did everything with, whom you've not spoken to in 4 years, and this friend is about to move away the day after tomorrow. _Of course_ you are going to tunnel vision them, and make them the center of your world for the last day and a half you get to spend with them. I mean, if you didn't, I would have to question just how much you cared about said friend. If Hero _didn't_ tunnel vision Sunny, I would have some serious questions for him, lol. Heck, even the Dad picks up on this and goes "you haven't seen Sunny in forever and he's about to move... what are you waiting for? go out and enjoy the little time you got left!" type thing. Even the Mom reluctantly agrees.
I mean tbh if my dead girlfriend's (my case would be boyfriend but whatever) younger brother who I haven't seen since I was 15 after my partner committed suicide just came out of his house after 4 years just to spend 1 more day before he moves out...I would tunnel vision SO hard, like, sure I have my brother. But he's my BROTHER. I can always see him and I always can come back to see him. Sunny? That's a last chance for a while, and it's the first chance in also a while. To be honest I think it's great that Hero acknowledged Kel before continuing with talking to Sunny. It shows that he does appreciate and acknowledge his existence.
The more I watch you play this game, the more I learn to appreciate the writing. It's so dang solid. Kel's mum is a bit of a narcissist which explains Hero's people pleasing tendencies and of course the dad has to be the peacekeeper and mediate to maintain the image of a functional family. I really like how much you talk about Hero because from the outside, he is perfect. Good looks, smarts, kind and caring, he is like the perfect person. But he himself is suffering from anxiety and his accomplishments are partly BECAUSE of his anxiety.
It's more likely the game takes place in the late 90's/early 2000's based on comparing weekdays with known dates in the photo album and something you can see on the other route that says "199X".
@@popcornmaster1419 It's not possible, but yeah that detail is weird, you have a good point, I guess it slipped, one little mistake. But anyways, glad that mistake happened because Pluto is an iconic character.
@@emartin29 I don't know, I mean, when did the debates _begin_ that Pluto shouldn't be considered a planet? Maybe Sunny heard about that somewhere, before it became official that Pluto is no longer a planet, and kinda just agreed with the "not a planet" side of the debate and inserted that into Headspace?
I really liked the parenting/people-pleasing tangent. Even if I don't feel Hero and Kel's mom is as bad about it as you were suggesting, you brought up some important points. Thank you.
I’m sorry, but at 29:19 or something- “Kel and Sunny didn’t listen” Kel: 🗣 Sunny: 🧍 I couldn’t stop laughing 😭 Sunny just always gives me “I’m not even in the right school-“ vibes.

@Keaton its hardly dumbledore style trivia, the creator of the character always intended for him to be trans but just couldnt find a way to work it into the story. plus with the creator being trans as well, i find it hard to compare it to jkr retconning things for brownie points while being a massive terf too
Ok, just a random thought. I used to go to school with a Charlene, her nickname was "Charlie". I don't know, I wasn't paying close attention to this game-
Aw. Unfortunately you missed a little dialogue where Basil would be in his bed. (Not fully conscious, I think) Was looking forward to that. To get to that simply insist on checking on him and enter his room while you're in his house, despite the group wanting to leave.
I'd like to comment that the hooligans did start the fight, like the description of the item. It was self defense. Still doesn't mean they were all wrong. But if I'm getting jumped (for lack of a better term) by 6 people. I'm pepper spraying them
I think that Charlene is actually a girl who is mistaken as a Guy because of the stature (being tall and intimidating) I think this because it does seem like her room is pink because she choose to, and she even play "tea party" with her teddy bear, not to mention that she likes flowers and uses a pink belt. I also think she represents the quote "not judge a book for it's cover" because she looks intimidating but in reality is a really nice person.
I was finally able to get the game for myself. As someone who’s watch several full playthroughs I thought I’d be ready. I’m already crying and I’m only at sweetheart help Update:I’ve finished it. Pain is all I know
really enjoyed your discussion over aubrey & basil's situations + hero & the mom's, especially the latter as the perspective differs coming from a therapist as opposed to people saying it's a cultural thing, so their opinion of it is more so that it's just a norm in those cultures. you can see quite a handful of cultural/situational(?) representation in the game, really (though whether it's being stereotypical/inclusive or not is obviously subject to debate), it's just the dynamic between hero and his mom that sticks to me more as someone whose upbringing has its similarities (though i come from a filipino family; kel and hero likely come from a hispanic family as hinted by the 'shrine'/ofrenda(???) upstairs). sure, it's most likely to do with cultural norms, but when it comes to taking it at face value, the points she made remain valid -- we can't deny the psychological effects it does to a kid raised in such conditions. 'course, that's not to say she's judging our cultural norms as 'bad', just stating and explaining what it does, and i think that in itself is very, very helpful in identifying some important personal things in our own lives in terms of where they may stem from.
i agree its like when people make those corny chancla jokes like yea its part of the "culture" (speaking as someone who is latine) but its still physical abuse no matter how you look at it even then theres nothing wrong about offering a different outlook on things that we may find normal imo u can learn so much from listening to other peoples perspectives and seeing people telling her that shes reaching feels to me that people are trying to shut this conversation for no good reason
Yes, a lot about this game really, really feels familiar to me and I think it's because I grew up in a similar environment that this game's Faraway Town is based on. I just keep wondering how much of it is based on the creator's experiences, or exaggerated, or experiences they read about, or completely made up circumstances. In any case, it feels like they did a really good job of combining all of these aspects to create very realistic characters with problems.
I’m sad that she missed the opportunity to do the quest with the angsty kid in his room and the sad slice of cake… I’m pretty sure you have to do a specific quest the day before to unlock it… (It’s one of my favorite irl npc quests. made me cry the first time.)
@@Beam3178 No the quest started on three days left... If im not mistaken you need to go to hobeez in the evening and interact with the wrinkly man two days left is when kel told headphone boy to celebrate his birthday with his dad
My parents put my brother’s really nice and classy anime figures on the bookshelves in the living room, so it does happen. But they also don’t have many people come to their house, soooo 😅
Why be sorry for pepper spraying attackers? It's a lot harder to win or outright impossible to win the fight against The Hooligans otherwise. Also, they chose to fight first, Sunny and Kel just fought back. I feel bad for Aubrey (and Basil), but she's no angel either. Her past doesn't mean her bullying justified her actions, but she also deserves to be cared for underneath her angry layer. I do appreciate taking the time looking at everyone's sides, though.
Probably because it’s shown in the game that the rest of the Hooligans aren’t inherently bad people. They appear to be under a bad influence through Aubrey’s anger towards Basil.
@@kaylemathewcomendador6964 yeah, but you can be sympathetic towards someone and not excuse their bad actions at the same time. the hooligans (and aubrey) are just kids and that is something to consider, but theyre still bullies. i like the way aubrey is handled in the game. she takes full responsibility for her actions and the others let her, while still offering comfort and forgiveness. so its a bit sad that outside of it she isnt really treated the same.
throughout this entire game, basil is... impermanent. he dissapears in headspace, he gives his most prized belongings to other people, presumably isolates himself after his panic attack and runs off to a potentially lethal area even though hes unable to swim. :)
I really liked your imput to Kel and Hero's mom, I've noticed her behavior wasn't okay but hearing the possible reasons and how it impacts a child from a professional is actually super informative:)
Hi! People-pleaser here! I think mine started as "brother pleasing". Both my brothers had very volatile tempers. It's only now in adulthood where I'm learning how to talk back because before my default was to shrink back and minimize the amount of things I can get shouted at for. I find it very helpful and interesting when you talk about people-pleasing. Helps me and my best friend in our conversations. Great reflections as usual!
i totally understand where you're going with the whole tragedy in two days thing and how it was so terrible that aubrey got maced out of nowhere, but i mean, c'mon. she literally decided to fight you in a 6v2 using a nail bat. self-defense is self-defense. she had plenty of chances to back out and not choose violence, but she chose to attack.
We all really do have a different emotions we feel comfortable in expressing to show our pain. Im personally a sad one, but I do have friends who go to anger. It's the same relatable lead up with different causes. I think the hard part with anger is we see it as far more damaging to the people around us.
You missed the side quest of the Dad who was preparing for his son's 10th birthday that's why the door wasn't opening. That side quest was pretty emotional :
i'm not 100% sure if this is true but i'm pretty sure Charlene is actually a trans girl & her mother is actually supportive. i know that's not super common among older generations, but it's not totally unheard of. that also explains why she's got a generally larger body -- she was amab & probably didn't have access to hormone therapy or puberty blockers. as to how Sunny knew that?? either she had been out before, or there's something else. even though most of what we see is in his head, i don't think there were absolutely no supernatural shenanigans going on throughout the game. there's little instances where Sunny knows things he really shouldn't, like how Sean & Ren in the dream world are based on irl people he hadn't met before leaving his house with Kel on day one, since they said they were new to the area. if he's never met them before, how could he have made dream world versions of them?? i have other instances in mind too that contribute to that theory, but to list them would be going into spoiler territory, so i'll just leave it at this: the symbolism of the white egret orchid is obviously significant, right?? it symbolizes the phrase "my thoughts will follow you into your dreams", they make it very clear that this is important -- if we're meant to take that interpretation as literal, that wouldn't be possible without some form of supernatural interference.
Eh, some of the people in the Headspace Playground are probably people Sunny met IRL when he was 12. Sean and Ren are a bit older, the way they are written says to me that they are 18 currently (which means they were 14 when Sunny was 12). It's a relatively small town where all the kids had at least met/heard of each other, which is why Sunny knows about Kim, Mikhail, Vance, etc. I'm sure at some point, Sunny met Sean and Ren, I mean they're only 2 years older, so why not? Maybe Sean and Ren were always super-close BF/GF stuff and Sunny just naturally shipped them together and they wound up getting married RL? Also, there's the fact that Sunny thinks that Sean's name is spelled "Shawn", which means Sunny has only heard the name _spoken_ and not _written,_ same with Mikhail (he thinks it's spelled 'Mikhal' in Headspace and Sharlene who he mistakenly thinks is spelled Sharleen). This further supports the theory that Sean and Ren are people Sunny has met in passing, knows about, but never really got to know.
@@Dhalin fair enough, but i never said there weren't more people in the dream world who were inspired by irl people he's met, & that doesn't necessarily disprove my theory for a few other reasons. it still doesn't explain how Sunny knew Charlene was trans. this was the late 90s/early 2000s & there wasn't nearly as much widespread information about these things back then, so while it is possible that she could have been out as a child, i don't think that's very likely. that also doesn't explain the significance of the white egret orchid & it's tie in with later scenes, but i obviously won't go into that bc of spoilers. if you've beaten the game & want to hear them, i'll make another comment with a proper spoiler warning.
No. There's nothing to support this delusion. Sjws need to stop thinking just because someone uses a variation of their name that they're trans. Zack and Cody had Max who is a girl, if it were made today, instead of being a tomboy, sjws would label her trans.
Really? I haven’t noticed any confirmation on that but about Charlie. I noticed confirmation that Space Boyfriend is trans, but not much about other characters.
Wow, i never realize how much I relate to Hero when she said that. Its mind blowing that the problem she described that Hero might have is my problem too (people pleasing,…)
In sunny’s defense, he was being attacked by a gang of six and all he had was a jock friend who caused the fight in the first place with a ball and some meditation techniques so he had some right to use pepper stray?
Wow ok I didn't need you to tear open my head and dissect my brain in that parenting section (I'm joking, it was really helpful to hear an expert confirm that what I'm suspecting is my problem has some merit to it)
33:51 After all the talk she's done about other things I'm surprised she didn't say something like: "This is NOT something you should be doing underwater." as well... Yeah, you missed the quest with the kid whose door you knocked on so many times since you didn't get him a present (given to Wrinkly Forehead) yesterday. Also, unless you like cats, it isn't worth it. $1 trash for $10 fish. Unless there's an achievement for all cats
She’s almost at the best part in the game! A little bit of advice, maybe in like 6ish episodes you’ll get to a section with a lot of doors- when a red door appears there, DON’T go into it until you have cleared all the other doors in the area. You’ll be missing out on a lot of very important optional stuff. Also, it’s really interesting seeing your reactions to everyone’s real world personality. A thing I think, that maybe isn’t shown, is kels reaction to stuff. Considering that hero is the perfect child, it really does feel like Kel bottles up his emotions and tries to play into his jokester persona, preferring to focus on sports and stuff than his real emotions. That might just be my analysis, but he’s my favourite character, so what can I say haha.
I see Kel and Hero's mom and the type of person who has a jealous love. She loves her children so much that she feels like every moment they are not with her is a moment robbed away. She wants to be the focus of everyone around her. Even if it hurts her family in the long run.
15:25 Omocat released some concept art of all the Faraway Town residents, with the order of characters categorized by age, Polly was shown in the 22-30 range. Hope that answers your question! (I like to think Polly ends up adopting Basil after everything... she was there for him more than his parents ever were)
The Maverick really just blinked twice at Kel, prompting Sunny to pepper spray everyone, what a reaction! (Somehow infinitely funnier than the Hooligans actually attacking first)
55:06 the man said : hi mom, hows doing today? old lady(also fish seller) : a little busy but fine, hows Joy doing? Man : She's studying , very hard. as a Chinese player thats the only lines that Im pretty sure about anyway love your videos, you doing great jobs !
54:54 Don't cats leave smelly things as a sign of affection? Also, seeing as you're so close to the next dream, here's a little tip to keep in mind- as the dream slowly becomes a nightmare, you'll start to see the true connection between these worlds. As what should be in the dreams crosses into the real world...as what was only in the real world is seen in dreams...things are becoming unbalanced.
i did notice hero's people pleasing tendencies when I played, and also his mom's behavior, but I never even thought to correlate the two of them. wow. it just makes so much more sense now.

Yay ! A new video ^^ Also, isn't Charlie a girl's name too ? I don't really know :/ but if they are really trans or non binary, it makes me really happy to see more representations ^^
I really love how you take a step back and empathize with Aubrey without knowing the full details, instead of judging her like so many other playthroughs I’ve seen
The way I've thought of Charlene was that she's just really tall and I guess butch? And being perceived as the "big and silent" stereotype, especially being part of the scooter gang/The Hooligans, whereas in reality when you see her in the gardening section of Fix-it and her house, she just seems to be really shy and a lot more into the stereotypical girly and pretty stuff than her appearance and demeanor would suggest at first. As well as the Charlie/Charlene thing, I thought of it as Charlie just being her nickname. There is a picnic dialogue in the dream world on the playground, not sure if you got it in your playthrough, where Kel is trying to remember all the names of the people on the playground, and ends up saying how he is really bad with names. So him only remembering her nickname Charlie could just come from that. But her being potentially trans or non-binary is a point of view that I've not thought of myself! It would also seem very plausible. Sunny created her Headspace counterpart Sharleen 4 years ago, so assuming she is trans/non-binary, it could mean Sunny always had a hunch, or she was already openly presenting more female at age 12, but sadly we don't have any actual info on that. It sure is interesting to think about though.
@@pluto3194 Bebe (the girl in Fashionable Mom's house with the other love letter) is outright said to be in love with The Maverick. She is at the fountain on the first day of Faraway Town before the Maverick fight happens saying that she hears she's gonna meet her true love that day. After you fight the Maverick there, she says she has a crush on him because of his confidence. It's interesting seeing this reading of FtM Charlene because me and everyone who I've shown this game all interpret the game as showing Charlene as MtF, with Charlene's mom being extremely supportive of them. Personally, I always envisioned, with this interpretation, that Charlene's love letter was for Angel, but admittedly that was basically just for the flimsy justification of they are usually seen together
Just adding to the discussion, other characters have some stigmas twisted. Aubrey is a tough character who eventually became a bully, but such twist isn't so uncommon now on medias. On the other hand, Basil's big hobby for flowers, appearance and personally distracted me from HIS pronouns for a long time. I can tell this isn't the eighties because if they were basil wouldn't be able to go around town with flowers in his hair without getting slurs yelled at him
Yikes, that’s a nasty thought. In the fight with Kim & Vance, Kim’s got a “do nothing” action that’s described as her answering a wrong number on her phone. So maybe that’s a hint on what time the story is set in.
Yep, picked up on the people pleasing/ parent pleasing issue with Hero right as that scene with him interacting with his mom playing out when I played the game... Reminded me a lot of my relationship with my mother, she's very similar to his mom. I also, like Hero, am the oldest with a lot of younger siblings, so I took on most of that guilt tripping. Thought it was unhealthy then and still believe the same. The good thing about these experiences though, is that it provides me and others the tools on being a healthier parent.
So, Aubrey is externalizing her feelings, while Basil internalizes his. It could also be a great example of how depression doesn’t always look the same.
Or trauma
@@shipperina2213 I was choosing my words to avoid suggesting too many spoilers, while also making sure my second sentence was still applicable (i.e., you don’t need trauma to be depressed).

Yes, I also thought that something was off but never pulled it out to further analyze it

I 100%'d this game a month ago and I still learn new things about it.
@@Kaghtaviy Even the other routes?
When Kel talks about Sally, it really puts into perspective just how long Sunny has been shut off.

*Edit: change of wording, only realized that you're probably a professional on my second read

if it helps with the pepper spray situation, that is 6 late-teenagers who were absolutely going to beat up sunny and kel, there's no way to win without the pepper spray and it was definitely them that started the fight

I just realized how Hero was talking a bunch about how good it was to see Sunny, briefly acknowledged Kel, and then went back to ignoring Kel… ouch
Kel's mum is a bit of a narcissist which explains Hero's people pleasing tendencies and of course the dad has to be the peacekeeper and mediate to maintain the image of a functional family.

really enjoyed your discussion over aubrey & basil's situations + hero & the mom's, especially the latter as the perspective differs coming from a therapist as opposed to people saying it's a cultural thing, so their opinion of it is more so that it's just a norm in those cultures. you can see quite a handful of cultural/situational(?) representation in the game, really (though whether it's being stereotypical/inclusive or not is obviously subject to debate), it's just the dynamic between hero and his mom that sticks to me more as someone whose upbringing has its similarities (though i come from a filipino family; kel and hero likely come from a hispanic family as hinted by the 'shrine'/ofrenda(???) upstairs).
sure, it's most likely to do with cultural norms, but when it comes to taking it at face value, the points she made remain valid -- we can't deny the psychological effects it does to a kid raised in such conditions. 'course, that's not to say she's judging our cultural norms as 'bad', just stating and explaining what it does, and i think that in itself is very, very helpful in identifying some important personal things in our own lives in terms of where they may stem from.

i'm not 100% sure if this is true but i'm pretty sure Charlene is actually a trans girl & her mother is actually supportive. i know that's not super common among older generations, but it's not totally unheard of. that also explains why she's got a generally larger body -- she was amab & probably didn't have access to hormone therapy or puberty blockers.
as to how Sunny knew that?? either she had been out before, or there's something else. even though most of what we see is in his head, i don't think there were absolutely no supernatural shenanigans going on throughout the game. there's little instances where Sunny knows things he really shouldn't, like how Sean & Ren in the dream world are based on irl people he hadn't met before leaving his house with Kel on day one, since they said they were new to the area. if he's never met them before, how could he have made dream world versions of them??
i have other instances in mind too that contribute to that theory, but to list them would be going into spoiler territory, so i'll just leave it at this: the symbolism of the white egret orchid is obviously significant, right?? it symbolizes the phrase "my thoughts will follow you into your dreams", they make it very clear that this is important -- if we're meant to take that interpretation as literal, that wouldn't be possible without some form of supernatural interference.
I love your discussion on Hero's family, I agree with it whole heartedly
Wow, i never realize how much I relate to Hero when she said that. Its mind blowing that the problem she described that Hero might have is my problem too (people pleasing,…)
This was a wonderful episode. I loved your insight on Aubrey's point of view!
In sunny’s defense, he was being attacked by a gang of six and all he had was a jock friend who caused the fight in the first place with a ball and some meditation techniques so he had some right to use pepper stray?
To be fair to Kel about the pepper spray, most people don't realize just how painful it is
15:20 Fairly certain that you've stated you don't read comments for spoiler reasons, but Polly is somewhere in the range 22-30.
Looking at different year hints in the game, I think this takes place in the late 90's actually.
All of your series of videos are helping me to cope with my trauma.
Thank you so much.
ayo don't read the comments if you don't want the game spoiled
Hero is 19 and the other kids are 16
Mari and hero are the same age so if Mari was alive at this time she would also be 19
This is the best playthrough of this game available anywhere.
Oh god I just noticed at 33:45 the shapes being made by the tentacles/vegetation show a really dark image of something later on
You mean something or Something?
I see Kel and Hero's mom and the type of person who has a jealous love. She loves her children so much that she feels like every moment they are not with her is a moment robbed away. She wants to be the focus of everyone around her. Even if it hurts her family in the long run.
15:25 Omocat released some concept art of all the Faraway Town residents, with the order of characters categorized by age, Polly was shown in the 22-30 range. Hope that answers your question! (I like to think Polly ends up adopting Basil after everything... she was there for him more than his parents ever were)
I think the pepper spray battle was a secret, congrats on finding it
The Maverick really just blinked twice at Kel, prompting Sunny to pepper spray everyone, what a reaction!
(Somehow infinitely funnier than the Hooligans actually attacking first)
Ayo another episode! Keep up the great content! :)

the man said : hi mom, hows doing today?
old lady(also fish seller) : a little busy but fine, hows Joy doing?

Isn’t there a dead body you should be taking care of?
54:54 Don't cats leave smelly things as a sign of affection?
Also, seeing as you're so close to the next dream, here's a little tip to keep in mind- as the dream slowly becomes a nightmare, you'll start to see the true connection between these worlds. As what should be in the dreams crosses into the real world...as what was only in the real world is seen in dreams...things are becoming unbalanced.
i did notice hero's people pleasing tendencies when I played, and also his mom's behavior, but I never even thought to correlate the two of them. wow. it just makes so much more sense now.
She got the Pepper Spray thing in the first run huh, congratz!
she found the bread twin's house. very epic ahyayayayywysysysyysysyayyaysysysy
I'm pretty sure Charlie is just a short form for Charlene. 💀
1:20:54 He said misses you not messes with you. Different context.
I feel like this was in the 90s since in white space, you see Omori using a laptop
i love the way you analyse things in this game, it makes me emotional because i think you can understand what these characters are experiencing. also the music just adds to the emotion, its such a good soundtrack. u got a new sub
Your videos are just so comforting to watch. And your hair looks so wonderful in this episode!
Thank you so much
you should go back to the spot in the dungeon that you went to go beat sweetheart, there is a small door that leads to a a character called rococo, he can commission you art
Look at the emotion chart in headspace, the emotion the kids are displaying are how they dealt with mari's death.
Kel, need I say more?
Explain neutral or happy
@@oyungogdfrust4136 Sunny is the most closed one about his grief by almost never showing emotions to other people and literally locking himself out. About Kel, he always try to stay positive, maybe as a way to be how Mari would want them to stay even after...
ive been waitin for this one!! TURN IT UP!!!!
in the cemetery
you can find Mari's grave, you can interact with it
She already did interact with it in the previous episodes but only with kel

Aubrey is my favorite character , we share similar problems and i can't help but feel sorry for her
Yay ! A new video ^^ Also, isn't Charlie a girl's name too ? I don't really know :/ but if they are really trans or non binary, it makes me really happy to see more representations ^^
Yeah, Charlie's A Name That Goes Both Ways.
@@2012petvet Thanks ! I wasn't sure ^^
@@marithecookie6791 No Problem..
If you are looking for rep, Captain Spaceboy is trans
@@autisticizzy6795 Really ? That's great :D
Sorry if the comment sounds rude, but it wasn't my intention, it's just that the topic is polemic and it's hard not to sound so
Tomboys exist. The trans narrative is weird sjw head canon. Its insulting to girls who don't dress all girly.
Now I just imagine whenever she has particularly reluctant patients she just goes to their house and knocks on the door for several hours.
In the Dream world there is a secret boss fight in a place called "Breaven" in the orange oasis where you fight Mikheal's twins whom are now Unbread Twins
I love your commentary so much
I can tell this isn't the eighties because if they were basil wouldn't be able to go around town with flowers in his hair without getting slurs yelled at him
OH GOD
Yikes, that’s a nasty thought.
In the fight with Kim & Vance, Kim’s got a “do nothing” action that’s described as her answering a wrong number on her phone. So maybe that’s a hint on what time the story is set in.
@@kaylemathewcomendador6964 a nasty thought to be sure, but you know it's true
Early-mid 2000s most likely. Late Nokias/very early Smartphones, box computers, vintage Arcade machines, DVDs and proto streaming etc.
5he way Kel handled the situation at 5he lale shows his greatest flaw, he just doesn't listen to people when his self righteousness gets in 5he way
I- do you have dyslexia..?
(Sorry but the spelling errors hurt me)
Yep, picked up on the people pleasing/ parent pleasing issue with Hero right as that scene with him interacting with his mom playing out when I played the game...
Loved this episode and you're insight! Excited for the next one as always
