Hi Julian looking forward to more video's from you and Station Road, I have final got my baseboards made and starting to insulate the shed ready to begin the new home for the strays from NZ. By the way Kev says hello to you all. Take care be safe. Cheers Steve
Look forward to the next installment ,like the building and the lighting ,now we are on lockdown in the UK , I will have a little bit more time to watch quite a few of my subscribed channels, plus plenty of jobs round the home ,stay safe .
Great video, and what a brilliant idea to use milliput. I will certainly think carefully about this. You mentioned the Hunt couplings which are brilliant, they are certainly on a winner there. However, the kaydee do have a place for shunting which cannot be done with the Hunts as they are magnetic. Perfect for permanent rakes, but would employ ‘hand of god’ for separating stock.
Thinking about the Hunt couplings more carefully, I wonder if they're going to be more suitable for modern era layouts with long mainline passenger and freight trains that have a home in large fiddle yards?
Nice to see you again on Kadee couplings. You made me chek all my Bachmann wagons and, fortunately, the only issue I have with only one of them it is because... it has no NEM couplings ! For second hand/end of stock wagons, your tips are precious. Personnaly, if I would have issues with NEM pockets on a Bachmann wagon, I would simply remove the NEM pocket and put a Kadee pocket with the right height coupler instead, something I had thought about my Dapol wagons before finding your solution... All my Bachmann wagons are bought only since december last year, when I switched from N to OO, that might explain why I have no issues. Seems Bachmann had cured this recurring problem on their rolling stock recently. Anyway, Miliput is a must-have for every plastic modeller, I had seen this when I was doing 1/72 airplanes when I was a teen. When dry, you cans drill, sand and cut it like solid plastic. If not for rolling stock, it is usefull for building or other plastic kits. I'm looking at Dapol and Ratio wagon and coach plastic kits now, I would certainly buy some Miliput to fill the gaps if necessary.
I think it sounds like my suspicions on the Bachmann NEM pocket heights are confirmed if you say your recent Bachmann stock is okay. I guess when the NEM pocket system first began being adopted, not all manufactures were focused on a standard height.
Hi Julian really enjoy your videos amazing how technology has shrunk the world you could be just next door. Keep safe all the best from the UK Rgds Mike
It's great to hear I'm able to help you on your Kadee quest. I plan to do an update video on the Kadee's at some point as I've converted more of my stock and encountered further unique modifications were needed.
glad you got the dr5000 julian the infernal clicking of the elite could drive you mad , im really happy with mine ,its a great price too, and has some brilliant features as you said the z21 app look forward to you review on it.............tony
yes it was julian a few months ago i just remember many clicks on your elite just to get some sound from a loco , and the dr5000 has such a easy way of reading and writing to you ddc chips , it is a very versatile piece of kit ,im going to combine mine with train controller software when i can afford it ,keep up the good work as you are very popular over here
I have had a go at adding Kadee couplings to my wagons - not easy, given there is no standard to NEM coupling heights, but not unachievable. Do you have any advice on how to install Kadees on locomotives, especially those where the NEM coupling is moulded onto the bogie.
plus i had to trim off the coupling bent drop down part the uncoupler catch on points and catch on the mail take and drop off catches that lie in the middle of the track so they all cut off short
The curved drop-down rod is part of the automatic uncoupling system (if you have kadee magnets installed on your track). I have found I needed to bend some up a little bit (carefully) to clear certain sections of track. Chopping these rods off will mean they won't uncouple automatically if you're using the magnets.
hi well i got bad news for kadee couplings i bought the polar express from lionel and 4 out of the 6 that comes with the trainset all broke one a week the spring comes off plus now another 1 this week but i found the spring on the lay oiut to about 2 seconds to put back but i gave up on the hours i spent on the layout to find it but i bought new ones - so now i give up with them and i am going to find out where to get these hunt couplings from
It sounds like you've had quite a bad run with the kadee's. So far I've had one spring pop out and that was when I was installing it, but I've not had them pop out around the track. When you buy the kadee coupler packs they always come with spare springs which does imply they might have a tendency to pop out. However, I wonder whether your trainset uses authentic kadee's or some inferior knock-off?
@@StationRoadModelRailway its from america the polar express and there short kadee these one i bought are longer ones 1 spring has come off since i fitted them took a while again to find the spring
If you look at kadee couplers each coupler comes in thre types, centreset, underset and overset. In your video you are fitting an overset coupler to a nem pocket that had an underset tension coupler, no wonder you had a height difference.
Fully aware standard Kadee's come in 3 heights, but the NEM versions only come in 1 height. The only variation with Kadee NEM couplers is the length, long, medium and short. The reason Kadee only produce the 1 height option is because they assumed all NEM pockets would have a standard height across all manufacturers, and of course this is not the case.

Excellent stuff. Hope you’re keeping well and safe. When you get a chance, email through some pics of Kev in his new home👍

Sounds like a great plan, I'll be doing the same here in New Zealand as we go into full lockdown by midnight tonight.
Great update Julian!!! I use the DR5000 from Digikeijs also. Very pleased with it. Cheers from Holland. Onno.

Great update video, and wow what a neat kit you built for Annie. Great to hear from you, and you take care. Kevin

Just found your channel, enjoyed this, and has helped me in my quest for Kadee couplings

Good idea with the plug and harness for LEDs.

Hi Tony, was it you who suggested the DR5000? IF it was, then a massive thank you, it's absolutely brilliant, especially for the price.

Hi julian another great video mate ever intererting keep well in the nz mate i am well here in N.lreland clive

quite informative. might try the zap goo.
Zap goo is definitely worth having on the workbench. When superglue fails to work, zap goo comes to the rescue for me😀
just wait till you see them derail its the pointer that points down the manual decoupler catches on points and the mail track inserts
plus i had to trim off the coupling bent drop down part the uncoupler catch on points and catch on the mail take and drop off catches that lie in the middle of the track so they all cut off short
