Anticipating the wave of hate coming from people who, for many, haven't watched the video, I am leaving the comments open. Hate comments are always welcomed (and never censored) as they boost the engagement rates of this channel like crazy. It makes me sad to say this, but by experience, a lot will come from some Muslims who, by their comments, will give others many more reasons to stay away from Islam. There might be some random nationalist trolls here and there as usual, but I just wish the internet could be a place for constructive discussions rather than a giant MMA ring. Give me hope people!

@undercoverangel1410 Any academic and professional would and should cite sources. Otherwise, it is just unsubstantiated opinion and reckless. In the case of Ex-Muslims, it is an oft made accusation to try to slander and detract from their message and character. Given that Muslims are subjected to all kinds of innuendo, slander, and prejudice, I would have hoped that would not have happened. It detracts from the compassion and empathy that Mr. Barylo is trying to convey to the audience of the video. But honestly, if someone made the claim, "1% of Muslims are engaged in (X negative behavior)" that would be right challenged and proof of that behavior would be owed.

Assalam o Alaikum brother! It was a much-needed video. I also sympathize with those who leave islam due to bad behaviour of Muslims. I also want to share my journey briefly. My parents are traditionalists who follow cherry-picked stuff from religion. I was doing all fard, sunnah and nawafil worship. However, I also justified for myself the habit of watching bad stuff on screens. But when i learnt that these sins are wasting all of my worship, I became suicidal. I suffered from withdrawal of bad screen addiction. When i met arguments against Islam, i doubted my faith. However, Quran answered lot of my questions and then i started to study about my deen. I'm still on my journey.

That's a superbrain preemptive move there brother 😬, causing otherwise reflexive kneejerk folks to self reflect and not just be jerks.
I have to say though that from what I've seen in your other videos, your commentators are noticeably more empathetically thoughtful, self-aware and less obnoxiously belligerent than those on other videos about Islam. I wonder if it is due to how well you embody the sociological spirit of academic impartiality while still retaining your warm humanity that your audience also subconsciously strive to emulate this as well 👍

BismIillah. So I converted 6 years ago and have some very bad experiences with other muslims for a certain period early into my conversion. Did i doubt if i made the right choice, yes i did. My imaan was very low for about a year due to this but Alhamdulillah i stuck with it and actually got a lot closer to Allah 'azza wa jal from this in the end.
I focused on the religion instead of the people, i sought knowledge myself and my isolation became a joy because in those moments all I had was Allah 'azza wa jal and what a great blessing that was. I now feel like a part of the muslim community and mix with my fellow muslims, knowing how to discern the ignorant ones from sincere muslims.
To anyone who has a similiar struggle, just know that there's nothing wrong with praying at the masjid, giving salams and leaving. Spend that time learning more about Allah subhana wa ta'ala and getting closer to him with dhikr, fasting, and sadaqa. Soon opinions of others will be of little concern and ironically this is the point when I actually started meeting some great friends and things improved. Remember, people are a test for you also.
May Allah subhana wa ta'ala guide us and give us istiqamah. Amiin.

i was not muslim i was a white boy in the suburbs, and i got bullied by the same kids that looked like me. It's not about any religion. it's about generational trauma. people are also stupid. That's why we need to read and learn. they found a blockage, or trial
and it was the test they needed to overcome. The are muslims then there is Islam. also alot of Muslim in the west are from colonialized countries. so there is way more going on than just your own journey.
To be fair, i had similar western propaganda about islam in my head. but then i started learning myself, and to be patient, anything i know, i know is not enough. God is All knowing.

Islam came to free humanity from the enslavement of their egos .Most people find it very hard to bow down 5 times a day because of their egos ,because the ego does not want to submit itself to Allah(it has to be conditioned) .Taking the easy way out is not the answer.Allah says in the Quran after every difficulty there is relief .

Freedom???? There is no denying of the ego in islam that I can see. It is the collective mentality of “ we are right” and “ others are wrong” . That is not denial of the ego, but strengthening the collective ego.

@@jeanmullen8327by you saying what you are saying is also ego. The difference between you and Islam is that Islam has a method that proves it is from GOD. You have no Idea about it because you don't truly practice it. Please. Explain to me what freedom is? Is it freedom to Sell yourself for money? Is it freedom to fornicate with whoever you please ? What is freedom? Please explain. The problem with you and others who don't believe Islam to be true is that the way you see the world is from a worldly perspective. You believe in the body whilst we believe to save the soul, the body is the test and not giving into its temptations is key. You don't understand Islam and that is your problem. Alot of born Muslims aswell don't understand it until they see or delve into westernized culture and the things that they were protected from, has taken control over them and they lose themselves. You believe you right because your comment shows your belief. What makes you more right than Islam? Islam preserves morality. People Just don't practice it the way they should and the niceties of the world catch the ones that don't practice it. Well we will Know on judgement day. Only 2 paths. Believe or not to believe. Your choice.

That in itself cements the theory that it was trauma that caused it and not an actual objective decision to not believe or follow a system that they were not convinced by.

    • @techbetold
      @techbetold 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@williambarylo The ones who dive deep in to the religion, usually do so only at a later stage in their life. For example, as children they were never taught the Quran, nor was Islam a priority. suddenly when they reach a particular age in adulthood, they read the Quran and Hadith without context, by themselves, and without a guide or teacher resulting in them then making their own ill conceived judgement.
By then they have already made their mind up and have a certain bias towards the religion, based on their peers perception of Islam, and popular opinion, media representation etc.
As children they were never taught the basics even, and if some were, it was few and far between. the key issue here is lack of formative understanding, as well as confusion with cultural practises, which then informs their decision making. In Asia, especially in the subcontinent for example, divorce is seen as sin, as per their cultural traditions, but in Islam it’s acceptable if there is violation of Islamic creed. Ppl there mostly don’t know this, so women are made to stay in an abusive and un-islamic relationship. Eventually, some of the women leave Islam. Some ppl do so when they have already made their mind up about Islam from the formative years. The scholars who have left Islam, are maybe one or two and ALLAH knows best.

I can understand that many of these ex-Muslims might have been actually abused, but is it fair to demonize a whole community based on their own experience? Anyway, you are doing a great job and keep up the good work. Looking forward to more such informative content.

Just watched it and i pretty much agree with you. The fact that you took a neutral stance in this, makes it more understanding in their point of view without any biases. Understanding someone is the most important thing before doing anything else.
We are supposed to transmit message of Islam, the rest depends on the person whether they find it makes sense to them or not.
I wish Muslims were better at treating these people (not all Muslims are bad before someone calls me out.), i am pretty sure most of them would have sticked with Islam, if they didn't face toxicity. Seen one example by myself how a born Muslim left Islam because of toxic environment of Muslims.
Also unrelated but i really hope i see a day where someone i care for the most embraces Islam by their choice after i transmit the message. Even though i am preparing mentally for any possible outcome.
Huge props to you for sticking with Islam despite all these misadventures you faced from these Muslims.

These people want to satisfy their own desires. A lot of what you’re saying is not Islam, but the people like any other faith. Mankind is created for a reason like anything that is manufactured by a manufacturer. So if that product doesn’t work as expected the manufacturer will recall it, replace it or destroy it. Because Allah doesn’t need us to exist and can replace any creation. And Islam talks of accountability for what ever we have done. For those talking about predestination, Allah knows the past, present and future. Some of these people will never believe whatever it takes, because Allah said it in the Quran.

Would the "wounded healer" be the next phase when people try to support others in their leaving journey? If people strongly vocalise their distaste for Islam, I'm not sure they're 100% healed or ready to heal others yet!
And while the term has been coined by Jung, the concept has become well accepted in the medical world. See: Wounded Healers: Mental Health Workers' Experiences of Depression (1985).

This was decades ago and now my friend might think differently, though I have never asked.
I think it’s understandable to leave a faith when that faith has too many unresolved contradictions and or unanswered questions, and or the person has painful/bad experiences at the hands of other members of that faith. I also understand the appeal of turning to another faith when people of the new faith show kindness, mercy and acceptance. We all want to belong to a group of people who feel the same way we do.

Blessings as well as trials are there to promote seeking proximity to God.
Gods mercy supercedes this world and is for everyone, not just believers...
Alot of what im hearing here sounds like it comes from salafi/wahabism.
Stoning to death is not mentioned in the quran. Maybe in hadith, but not everyone accepts the same hadith. Different ilm al rijal.
Rape is never sanctioned especially in the quran.
Idk what this woman is talking about-men and women are judged the same..on their actions.
    Knowing arabic is not mandatory.
No one should be pushed to marriage. Marriage is not mandatory.
Muslim behavior is not the same as islam. We are flawed as humans, islam is not.
These people are lost and not getting the correct understanding. Theyve been mislead either by themselves or by other people.

Islam is the first religion that talked about women rights and established them. Islam found the first university. Islam kick started modern science. Tf are these people talking about? Don't just blame a whole religion for the sake of your own desires and sins.

These Apostasy laws are enacted by countries in the Middle East, Asia and Africa and have no basis in Islam - but people like to distort the texts for social control. Just like women forbidden to drive in Saudi Arabia until recently for "religious" reasons. There are no "Islamic" countries nowadays.

Despite all of this, my sincere pursuit of truth ultimately led me to realize and face the harsh realization that I discovered when I was 30 years old and that I was simply deceived by systematic and constructed lies.
I can go on and on to share my reasons, but I’ll just say that Islam doesn’t deliver to its promises and has failed miserably to build the human soul. Whether you believe in God or not, I want you to think outside the primitive and horrible Box of Islam, and enjoy the experience of exploring life without fear and horror.

Salam Brothers and sisters there’s Muslims and Islam two different things , but due to our background and history of our countries. people attempt to believe (converts \ reverts ) that they’re are being attacked or bullied. If you convert to Islam today and they ask you or trying to find you a husband nor a wife it’s because in Islam they believe marriage is a way to creat a good life for both you husband and children but due to our “background “ as westerners we feel like we’re being attacked because we believe in 50/50 and before all that we need to have some sort of dating stage to get to marriage but than we forget that dating lead up to lasciviousness and fornication, so in Islam that’s one of the biggest sin. what it does is they tried to prevent any situations women and men. And yes we’re all have trauma and so on , ofc that person might be a “Muslim “ but don’t act according to the book. Like our brother said they’re only Muslim by name. And it’s fine we’re all here to become the best version of us. Just remember even though they’re claim to be following “Islam “ they not perfect in terms of practicing acting the religion. And it’s maybe that the test that God put you through to see If you’re really submitting yourself to him but testing your faith. I don’t see why he should wait. Even myself as a men who was born into t religion I still try to seek acknowledge as I’m progressing through life. I have faced racism and so on from Muslims that are from a different countries but never got to me question the Lord. all I did was distinguish Islam and a Muslim.

@@truthfinder6538Actually if you look into Christian history Christianity was very violent too. However nobody has accused Christianity of being inherently violent as a religion. Just to make an example of the violent history of Christianity.
415: Ipatia of Alexandria , a prominent philosopher was attacked ,beaten and skinned alive by a mob of Christian fanatics in Alexandria ( Egypt). Her fault ? She was accused of being a witch who had cast a spell on the governor of Alexandria to control him. The same group of extremist Christians had previously persecuted the Jewish community and the Pagan community of Alexandria.
1099 . First Crusade. It started with a massacre of the Jewish communities in Germany ,it ended with the conquest of Jerusalem, in which the Crusades slaughtered every Muslim and Jew in the city.
1572 : massacre of S. Bartholomew . It was an event in the wars of religion in France between Catholics and Protestants. For days the Catholics killed Protestants in Paris and other cities in France.
1618-1648 : Thirty Years War. Catholics and Protestants kill each other In Europe . All started because basically the Holy Roman Emperor ( a Catholic) hadn't accepted that part of Germany was protestant and had been granted freedom of religion.
I could go on listing countless persecution and mass murders of Jews , massacres of people accused of being heretics from.the Catholic Church and other bloody events , but to be brief until 1700s Europe was ravaged by religious conflicts ,all of them justified by the Church saying that it was right to kill and persecute other people in the name of Christ and in defence of the Christian religion. And to me,a Christian, this is insane , since Christ literally said " if your enemy slaps you, offer him the other cheek" , that is the best example of non-violence and anti-hate speech I can think of. The problem.is that any religion can be bended to suit someone's aim. It is easy to cherry-pick the parts of your Holy Book that can be used to justify you ,also because Holy Books are famous to be contradictory . If you read the Old Testament it is full of blood and violence , but there are also quotations against violence ( one of the ten Commandments is literally : you shall not kill) .

I commend your patient and positive take on this. Because for a general muslim like me, we would take half of the ex muslim testimonies to be out of agenda and trend and not from a real take. But a testimonies out off ill intent.

Look up the thousands of testimonies of people who die and go to hell and heaven
There's so many testimonies that there's even studies on NDEs
Please do your research and don't end up in hell
I grew up as a Hispanic Catholic and I had an open mind.
I would question myself and ask if there was a God
I would even ask myself if the real God was of the Bible, what if the real God was from a different religion.
But the studies on the NDEs really showed me who the real God is
Please do your research people please
Hell is extremely horrible and I don't want anyone to end up there
Do research with an open mind
Don't be biased when you do your research
You will never find the truth if you do your research with a biased mentality
Search for the truth because your soul is literally on the line
Please do your research and avoid hell
Stop looking at your religions like if it's a gang or something cool, religion is about avoiding hell

Thanks for the balanced, unobtrusive, and (I dare to use the word) wise representation. Indeed, Dr. Barylo (the author) articulates-on the example of ex-Muslims- frameworks of thoughts and behaviors that we should be aware of or try to acquire to ensure a fruitful dialog between religions and beyond, if necessary. Sadly, most of the time, (inter-)religious debates-especially if Islam is involved- get stuck in intense hostility and harsh prejudices engrained in the Collective Unconscious and constantly re-enforced by the information flow in which Westerners bathe. It seems that the time of the Crusaders is not yet over. Fortunately, there are voices - like this channel - that attempt to improve the “boundary conditions” helping us across the borders.

Hi! I don't know if I qualify as an ex muslim; I was raised in a Muslim family in a Muslim country and still live there. Islam was forced down my throat as a child. I've always had doubts about it though and never really felt that I was in a relationship with the devine through it. I tried but agnostic atheism seemed and still seems more compelling.
Besides that I have always had a beef with ideologies that seek to recruit more people into their ranks and then boast about their superior statistics over others.
All in all, for me religions are a political tool of mass control that don't encourage critical thinking in their followers. As a believer, you're supposed to follow texts without questioning their authenticity and their usefulness to your growth. If you dare to doubt them, you're subjected to extreme punishments that could include death.
I discovered your channel recently and I appreciate your efforts. It's really refreshing to see religious Muslim channels who don't seek to dehumanize 'ex' muslims.

I think there are different reasons. I knew a guy who left Islam because an organization promised him a job and visa sponsorship for doing so. He was not religious at all to begin with, so much so that I doubt he even knew how to pray. Nevertheless, it was quite surprising for me because that was not a small thing even for a barely practising Muslim like him. Perhaps he was under a lot of pressure and got exploited by that organization in the moment of weakness. I wish he finds his way back to Islam.

Being muslim is to submit to the will of God, not to anyone. Once you understand that, then also know that people come in different shapes colors and sizes in all behaviours even your parents act differently so every religion have bad representatives but did you revert to Islam because of people or you research about it and you feel this is the one true religion you have to put in the work to know Islam is a journey with many hurdles and tests and the ultimate goal is to understand that between you and your God there is no intermediary you worship him HE Alone ..and AllAH alone will guide you when you ask for his Help..But if you revert to Islam because of people then most likely you will leave you have to understand your relationship with the one true GOD and have the sincerity in your heart and Allah will guide you...and even to us being brought up as muslims wallahi its a journey when i read more about Islam as i grow older the sweetness of the Iman and the religion islam is beautiful just have that sincerity in your heart and. Ask Allah for guidance and you shall receive it and no mediator please it is Allah alone can guide you and put your trust in him...may Allah make it easy for us may we all unite in Aljannatul firdaus Ameen.

I read ayaan ali hesis book infidel because she has always been touted as such an intellectual and i was expecting to see some real 'debunking' of Islam. But instead all I read was a story of deep emotional and physical trauma inflicted by those around her when she was young and vulnerable. She was let down by her community but she blames the religion and conflates culture with religion all the time throughout her book.

    Interteresting topic..
Islam means peace and a Muslaman is an individual whom submits to the will of Allah and the Oneness. Everyone has their own choices if what lifestyle/ religion they follow . But it's also a fact that most of the time Islam is misunderstood as a result of half understanding and lack of genuine knowledge of the context and reasoning behind certain versus in the Quran.
Its all about educating yourself and looking into the authentic sources also and gaining knowledge from the scholars etc.
There is no rush when one reverts.. They may take it one step at a time and as the saying goes.. From the cradle to the grave....

Choose to be a good human, help others and make the world a better place.
Drop the ex-Muslim label, you are a person that no longer believes and that’s fine. No compulsion live a fruitful life and help others
