To me Satie is the GREAT composer... he does things with time and space that nobody else has ever done, takes the piss like nobody else can, and also creates some blindingly wonderful music too. He is my absolute favorite musician.

i would add something as a french baguette person myself.
"Pour se jouer" is actually pretty ambiguous to translate because it doesn't mean anything much in french.
But in regards of the biography of Satie we can add a new interpretation to this :
"Pour se jouer" can be understood as " to play for yourself " but also as "to play yourself".
Erik Satie was part of the rose croix communitie which is a esoterical branch of christiannism, it finds its legacy in the kabbale and gnosis mouvements. this mystical point of view leads us to a spiritual journey in which the individual is at the center of his own question, with only him to unravel the mysteries of his words and reality.
Of course we remember the three "Gnosiennes" and their weird indications like "Munissez vous de clairvoyance" (be clairvoyant) or "du bout de la pensée" (From the tip of the thought).
So I think that in this perspective Vexation can be thought as a journey, a unsettling and confusing journey (as the triple flats and sharps seems to suggest) through a life who wants to keep its secrets from us, in order to get somewhere someday you'll have to endure what Pascal call "le silence éternel de ces espaces infinis" (The eternal silence of these infinite spaces), you need to stare deeply (at least 840 times maybe more who knows) at all of this and cope with the infinite silence that endlessly follows all of your questions.
"pour se jouer" can be seen as a indication that something's maybe hiding in the vexations and frustration, i don't know maybe this feeling of doing the same thing over and over with no results allows your deepest fears of impermanence to burst when you finally see your life fading away in time during your 18 hour play.
This Vexation of trying to find meaning in this intricate and mysterious piece, wondering if there is any meaning after all, remembering that the fact that "there is no meaning" would, itself, give a meaning to the piece.
As if, in some way, Vexation was a creation of some god that forbid anyone but the creator to understand it properly.
It tells about art, it tells about the human condition, it tells about mystic, it tells about this universe, or maybe not.
    But HEY, THAT'S JUST A THEORY !
Actually if you scearch enough you can find that Satie composed it after he broke up with his "maitresse" Suzanne Valadon, i don't know what to do with it, it can easily be implemented in my theory but it would be a big gap to cross attribute mystical and existencial meanings to a break up song, but as a former psycho student and esoterical aficionado i'll take the bet. what about you ?

@@feanturidur6422 Well I just read all of it, and presumably you read at least some as well in order to leave your own comment. Perhaps you can afford to have some more faith in arts commentary :)

For them to think that Satie recommended silence and contemplation prior to performing or undertaking the monumental task of 840 repetitions as simple humour or a joke, they’re highly overlooking the importance of meditation and contemplation in the traditions which Satie involved himself in.
