I was obsessed with Tom Waits as a teenager in the early 90s. His music is so evocative of an era long gone by. Ppl ask, why does this not have tons of views; because Mr Waits didn't sell his soul and sell out. Thats why....
he pretty much got his shit together by the 90s and partly why he finally gathered fame and had bigger deals and contracts offered to him,,,, before that he had his ups and sometimes bad downs so he stayed an underground and smoky piano bar singer gathering a cult following for quite awhile,, I started following him in 1974, we're the same age.... One of my all time favorites in both music and acting..
The first part of his career, the jazzbo leaning on a lampost was close to it. From franks wild years onward tho . That's the real tom. He's said as much
I couldn't agree more, boundtomusic - Marc Ribot is nothing short of amazing, he's played most of my favourite solos... mostly on Tom Waits songs... he's done some amazing solo work too
First Waits to cross my ears was this. Played it 100s of times Sophmore Year in #AnnArbor. Love you Tom. Thank you so very much. “Sane sane, we’re all insane.”
❤An original originator. A musical genius. A genius, period. Every song hits you in your heart & soul. It’s hard to do that on a consistent basis - he does it every time. “I’d rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.” -and- “Ya know there ain’t no devil it’s just god when he’s drunk.” -and can’t leave out: “Reality is for people who can’t face drugs.” All sounds like my life. Thank you Mr. Waits
Thank the lord for artists like Tom and Captain Beefheart. They don't give a toss whats hip or what bullshit music is fashionable they stay true to themselves and are all the more respected for it
Sane, sane, they're all insane, fireman's blind, the conductor is lame A Cincinnati jacket and a sad-luck dame Hanging out the window with a bottle full of rain Clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands Said roar, roar, the thunder and the roar Son of a bitch is never coming back here no more The moon in the window and a bird on the pole We can always find a millionaire to shovel all the coal Clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands Said steam, steam, a hundred bad dreams Going up to Harlem with a pistol in his jeans A fifty-dollar bill inside a Palladio's hat And nobody's sure where Mr. Knickerbocker's at Roar, roar, the thunder and the roar Son of a bitch is never coming back here no more Moon in the window and a bird on the pole Can always find a millionaire to shovel all the coal Clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands I said steam, steam, a hundred bad dreams Going up to Harlem with a pistol in his jeans A fifty-dollar bill inside a Palladio's hat And nobody's sure where Mr. Knickerbocker's at Shine, shine, a Roosevelt dime All the way to Baltimore and running out of time Salvation army seemed to wind up in the hole They all went to heaven in a little row boat Clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands Clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands Clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands
I didn’t know there was a video for the song I just wanted to listen to the audio and I don’t want to watch the video because while I’m sure it’s amazing I just don’t want it to ruin the visual and feeling I already have had for so many years
Back a ways, used to go to these "Underground Moving Gallery Parties" and there would be sports stars, writers, rockers- music stars of all kinds, politicos, NO media, hmm, alongside pimps, dealers and all types of alternative identities and some like me- the ones who exist on the fringes, all of us, in danger of extinction, cultures of just one - three, and maybe a generation from gone, we became the Nomads, now over 30 countries strong, yet as the song says- means little or less except when we get things done, and that unheralded, still- yes, "You can always get a millionaire to shovel all that coal" -or is the green energy the agenda today? The next jab? Are other entities seeking to import more improprieties? Your answers are within and without, so please care and act accordingly, not predictably, as we are not wasted organ transplants, we- like regenerated discards of chaos, the invisible voices, yet heard and echoes never lost, we pay the major costs, so let us care beyond the frost. Be warm to your neighbors and family. Smile at strangers, as you may find, as I have, some are related (to me) and that makes for an awesome bond. Carry on... peacefully. I keep my "black wings" under my long coat. Tom is a buddy, coz he never sells out. Thank you for this fantastic composition, the video that plays so great with the song. Appreciate it and will share many times as I always see more the more I watch. New subscriber happy to seek and find... ~RaVen~

I wish you could actually hear that clapping. It would really add that organic sound to the more 80s production. It would be like a Clutchy Hopkins instrumental! Still....this is so good for 86.

Rain Dogs is a masterpiece
Absolutely beautiful. Thanks Mr. Waits and to everyone involved.

Well Said.
We can know all those who have sold their soul.
he pretty much got his shit together by the 90s and partly why he finally gathered fame and had bigger deals and contracts offered to him,,,, before that he had his ups and sometimes bad downs so he stayed an underground and smoky piano bar singer gathering a cult following for quite awhile,, I started following him in 1974, we're the same age.... Best comment on the best video of the best artist
People sell their souls to Tom Waits.
The first part of his career, the jazzbo leaning on a lampost was close to it. From franks wild years onward tho . That's the real tom. He's said as much
The one man who can rock a fedora.
Me and my pal used to go camping in Wyoming...at night driving to an overlook and listening to Tom Waits just made the world okay...
Love the Imagunarium of Dr. Parnassus clips in this video.
One of the best guitar solo in rock history without any doubt and one of my absolute favourite tracks by the genius.
Mr. Marc Ribot.
WTF
I couldn't agree more, boundtomusic - Marc Ribot is nothing short of amazing, he's played most of my favourite solos... mostly on Tom Waits songs... he's done some amazing solo work too
check out Marc Ribot's intro & outro solos on Chocolate Genius "Half a Man" live . You will wonder how that Telecaster survived...
This track is one that Tom Waits will always be remembered by.

Tom Waits music, lyrics His multi dimensional artistic skills are sensational , and reveal bull's eye human behaviour
Heard this song the first time in ESPN documentary "Once upon a time in Queens" Can't believe I never heard this gem before.
Same. Great song
Tom Waits is in a class of his own, both in writing and performance. Just pure passion for his profession.
The best king in the music history Chris from sweden
Thank the lord for artists like Tom and Captain Beefheart. They don't give a toss whats hip or what bullshit music is fashionable they stay true to themselves and are all the more respected for it
When I heard Swordfishtrombones my world stopped. I’d been waiting all my life for it.

Thanks for this man !!!! This song does something to me. Music this deep is rarely made now a days. The lyrics have a eerie ring to it that digs deep.
Oh my goodness, this is a psychedelic experience
einfach genial der Typ
Une chanson qui berce mes soirées... J'adore !
Excelent and disruptive guitar riffs
Just heard this song today and now I found this video, wow! Clap Hands!
Lily Cole is great in this. A fave of Tom Waits oeuvre. Love the percussion & guitar

Magnifico.
This song and video mesh so well. I literally watch this video every night just hoping I can dream my way into it.
"They all went to heaven in a little row boat.."
So much sympathy for mister #Jim too.
And he can dance

That's from a movie Tom appears on. "Mr Parnassus" or something like that
The imaginarium of Dr Parnassus. Such a great film. Heath ledgers last movie. Tom waits does an amazing job as his character. One of my faves.

На Вашем месте я бы отправил данный клип на официальный его канал на YTube в подарок ))) Честно.
I came here from "SAF - Belgique". Like both versions.
Wow, never saw this. Who is that chick? Hot stuff.
Awesome it's a song that Peaky Blinders used.
"Well, damn. I won!"

Poets are born in Pomona ...
Waits played the Devil a little too good
Where did you get the footage of Tom in the bowler as the devil?
The movie is the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. Great Flick
