Your "$15" video was a major influence in my decision to get my ticket. I love the way you (and a few other hams on TH-cam) present your content. No hype, no trying to be trending, no disjointed live streams.....Just focused information presented in a friendly manner. Thanks for all your work and thanks for introducing me into such a wonderful hobby.
You're just an all around inspirational kind of a guy aren't you In about 3 hours from now I'll be sitting in an examination chair myself I hope I pass at least the Tech Thank you for everything you do for the hobby
You really do inspire many like myself and thank you so much. I’ve been down with your channel for about 6 months and finally starting to understand ham radios and how to operate them and still studying to get my license. Thanks my brother keep up the good work. 👊🏽👍🏽💯
Hey Brian, you inspired me to get my ham license. You also inspired me to buy a new D74. I have now passed and spend a lot of time on d star. Thank you Brian and keep up the good work. Ashley (M7TTI)
Thanks Brian for all the great insight into thing we might do with UHF and VHF with our start in Ham Radio. I'll test for Technician License in under two weeks I’m ready now. You’ve bee a great help and inspiration. 73’s
Hey Brian, I hope you are well. I'm waiting for a couple vof Baofeng radios to arrive by mail. I'm so glad I found your TH-cam channel. I have just subscribed. I'm in Bonnie Scotland and I may just give you a shout some time soon. Keep making great videos dear friend. Kind regards. Paul.
Been studying for my tech license for about 2 weeks now and I have my remote test tomorrow. Your videos really inspired me to just finally get into the hobby since I already had a UV5R that I was using to listen in on my local Sheriff and Fire Department (they use VHF and no worries I programmed to 5r so it couldn’t transmit). Hope to talk to you via EchoLink when I get my ticket.
Great videos, I have my tech license, and. this is what I am looking forward to to get contacts from a long ways a way without hf....I am looking at this radio....
I use a diamond antenna on my kenwood th d74. I was pretty decent signal xonsidering we live in a dip. Stood on front porch and was able to do a check-in with the local net.
Im thinking about getting this radio again, had it a few years ago and only did aprs and local net check ins...probably the nicest ht on the market, local vhf-uhf activity is not what it used to be so experimenting with d-star sounds interesting
Arsenal! ohhhh noooo haha. Joking aside, I just followed your Instagram for future possible chances of jumping on your radio club's repeater. If i'd have known, I would have definately jumped on through echolink from here in south-east england. Hopefully next time! stay safe and best 73' M7MMC.
Yikes! The Kenwood D74 is CDN $850 here (although I see a sale on at the Toronto based radio store, $100 off). What are the advantages? Are there other manufacturers that have similar radios for less? (a LOT less?). Enjoying my intro to ham radio with my 3 Baofeng handhelds, trying lots of things I've learned from your channel.
Ham Radio In Action Thanks for the reply! Will do some research and think about what’s next. On one of the ham channels I follow there was a formula given: R=n+1 where R= the number of radios one needs and n is the number we have now! VA3MZD
Just got a TH-D74A. Looking to set up for EchoLink but having trouble finding a step-by-step procedure. Can you point me in the right direction. Great video! Thanks. KN6JLC, 73s.
Echolink website has the DTMF tone commands to use, but you should contact repeater owner or manger to see if there are any restrictions or extra commands to link repeaters.
I am looking to get my license soon and want to get a HT now to start listening and learn. It seems to be between the TH-D74 or the Yaesu FT-3DR. I keep going back and forth. Still new so I am unsure if Dstar or Fusion is better for my area but which is the better radio overall is still unknown. I hear the D74 is probably the better overall radio but the battery life is not so good and it is not great for taking out into the woods etc... I read the D74 is kind of fragile. Opinions on those two things? I am leaning towards the FT-3D right now as it seems a bit more robust and has a great battery life but I love the features on the D74 from what I know at this point. Being able to take a radio out in the woods or just carry with you and use it is the main reason to get an HT so..
@@HamRadioInAction The only real thing that I may want in the future is SSB support and the FT-3D does not support that. Being new I am unsure that is a huge deal. Still learning and don't understand all of this yet so honestly am unsure what I need or don't right now. :) TH-cam class I am watching recommends getting a radio that supports it. Looking to future proof as much as I can as I "probably" won't be buying another radio for awhile. I live in a low area so probably won't even be able to use a base radio anyway. Unsure I could even reach a repeater. I may get a mobile at some point but the HT will be my primary unit and I will probably have to use a hot spot at home. Most use will be just taking it with me out in the field.
SSB is nice but usually people operate vhf/uhf SSB with base or mobile rigs with big antennas. The good news is ham radios don’t lose value as quick as other tech. If you buy something and don’t like it you could sell it and not lose that much money.
I know you’re a D74 fan, but I’m slightly sensitive to price, so why should I go with the D74 over the Yaesu 3DR? Will I get the extra money’s worth? If so, where? I’m studying now and hope to take the test in a week or so. Seems like HamFest has brought out some sales, so .... PS - Have you noticed the announced ICOM-ID52 to compete with these two above? Limited info but initial comparison thoughts? Worth waiting just to see?
Get what you can afford. I worked part time for a year to buy the Kenwood TH-D74A. The battery life is the only thing I hate about it. It is my primary Satellite radio and my only DStar Radio. The radio has more features than I have been able to use. I haven't really looked at the Yaesu 3DR so I can't compare but I do love the 74A. Honestly though, if you want a radio that you can carry around on your belt and talk for hours the Kenwood isn't for you. If you want the best audio and transmitting quality then the Kenwood is for you.
I have both the D74 and the FT3DR. The Yaesu only can offer FM or AM listening across its entire general coverage. The D74 does those but also CW and SSB. It’s also a tri-bander. The FT3DR has been heavily discounted since it’s launch a year ago. No one is lowering the price of the D74. If you’re going with the Yaesu, check the used market. Seems to be some values there compared to retail.

You inspired me to start studying for my tech about a week ago. Thanks for taking the time to put out content for others to enjoy!
I hope you get as much out of the hobby as I do. Thanks!
Got my Tech about 2 months ago. Go and get it. Good luck

There are so many good radios between The 74 and a Baofeng. Try to figure out what features are important to you and fits in your budget. Good luck.

I’m not afraid to take 74 outdoors I don’t think it’s fragile. When I go outdoors the only reason I wouldn’t take my 74 is battery life.

Anyone have information on EMP-hardened HF/VHF repeaters?
we need them.

How is the audio receive and transmit quality on the Kenwood D74? Would you recommend this over the Yaesu FT 3DR?

Can echo link and dstar communicate on the same repeater
Hi Brian how goes in the States a Shame i dont have a ham radio, i only have a cb 23 channels in my car, i hope you come t Danmark again. Mvh Brian

Can someone with a technician class license use Echo link? I’m getting mixed messages. I take my tech license test on 1/31.
My name is terry martin does anyone know if it is hard to pass the techinician exam i am new to ham radio.
How do I do call sign on eheo link
You can make an account online and it is easy to set up your phone to use echolink.
You can add your call sign to the profile or just say your call sign like a real radio
@@furonwarrior ok cool
Dude, you support ARSENAL? my home team in London..... where are you in the world
I feel that tossing voip in the mix is an insult to radio.
ARSENAL!!!!!!!!!
One of the best parts of ham radio is the lack of Spurs supporters because it requires learning and tests.
For a handheld radio that cost $1,000 you oughta be able to talk to Jesus with it!!!!!!!
