This whole "Ozil can't defend and should, therefore, be shipped out" narrative is utter rubbish. We saw it with Pogba being dropped for "not doing his hard miles" but those people (incl Mourinho) fail to realize that for some players, what they offer with the ball can afford them the luxury of not running around like rabbits.
Now, to make Ozil improve his defensive attributes, the manager should let him loose: Give him the freedom to create chances, assist, score.... tell him to use his powers for the good of the team more often. (We know his abilities and now he has Auba and Laca to work with). Mesut loves the club and he will do it. Now, once Mesut is happy and productive attacking-wise, ask him to start tackling a bit more than he does and tell him it is okay if he doesn't. Believe me, he will do a bit more defensively because he really cares about the club he committed his entire career to.
This whole nonsense of not even having him in the squad is all a bit ugly and even impacting the mood in the dressing room as some players become sympathetic to him (and he draws a lot of sympathy with his demeanor; he is not a bad boy or an abrasive character). Would Ozil thrive at a team like Atletico, you can bet he would!
The point is: Get the most out of Ozil who has dedicated his life to the club and it will be a win-win situation to everybody. Right now, his market value is even plummeting if offloading him is the end game with Emery. A foolish decision both on and off the pitch by the look of it.

The reason the defenders aren’t dropped is because we have nothing else, ozil can be dropped because we have loads of attacking minded players capable of playing a similar position such as Micki, Ramsey and Iwobi.

21/02/19 Arsenal vs Bate. Kickoff. Bate start off brightly to try and score an early goal in the first 10 mins. After this spell, Arsenal start to find their feet and rhythm and start to control the game. Bate set up to build a solid sturdy, "fence" to go with their, "De" and try to keep Arsenal out.
Frustration and groans around the Emirates as Arsenal play a few wasteful passes, but on 28 mins Iwobi breaks the deadlock after a fine passage of play. The game starts to open up and on the stroke of HT, Aubameyang finds the back of the net to make it 2-0 Arsenal at the break. *The fans are singing...*
2nd half resumes and Arsenal start off brightly missing several opportunities to make it 3-0. The game becomes a little bit flat but Arsenal are still in control with the majority of possession and chances created. The players are comfortable and atmosphere is amazing. *The fans are singing...* (including the hooligan away fans)
78mins in now and Monreal plays a poor back pass to Koscielny putting him under pressure. He gets pressed by Bate's striker causing a rash clearance which deflects back off him and rolls 10yrds out for a cheap corner kick. The Bate striker goes down after the collision with Koscielny with cramp, and gets a little treatment but soon gets back up in time.
81mins the coner kick is taken and poorly dealt with by Arsenal's de- *fence*. Bate win the header at the back post, and the loose ball is missed by 3 Arsenal players who all switch off (zonal marking 😆).
Tap in from 7yrds out by the most unlikeliest of match winners in the Bate team. 2-1. Crucial away goal conceded by Arsenal. The pressure intensifies. Wave after wave of attacking with no conviction untill they finally get tje ball in the back of the net to make it 3-1... until the linesman puts his flag up and rules out for offside 😁. 6+ minutes added on (only god knows how the ref calculated that) and Arsenal keep pressure on. Bate have all 11 men not only behind the ball but as deep as their own area, defending well as a unit, schooling the Arsenal de-fence.
Finally the whistle blows which is matched by a flury of BOOOO's around the emirates and the Arsenal players immediatly head for the tunnel with the Bate players celebrating relentlessly.

Aside from not hailing Arsene Wenger, Yeah he had to go but he was so so so important in Arsenals development, great moments at the turn of the century and just being a great guy. He deserves that award!
Klopp took 2-3 years to establish his style of play, Guardiola too took time... and these managers had a lot more backing financially from their owners. Claude, where's your voice of reason? Also, the reason why Ozil is dropped and not others is because they give 100% on the pitch at much lesser than 350k a week. Love Ozil but he needs a fully secure defense to do the dirty work for him, something that Arsenal lack currently.
