I love the simplicity. If you were out at the pub with some friends, just ask bartender for 4 coasters each and draw an X on the back of 1 coaster each person, and there you go.
now i want brian, tom scott, brennan lee mulligan, and matt parker to play skull together. i think it would be diabolical and things will be thrown or broken
A few rules that were missing here: 1.- Whenever anyone challenges, everyone has to either raise or pass, not just the next player. If you pass, you're out of that round, even if someone else raises. 2.- If at any point you're left with only 1 skull and no flowers, you can still play, but if your skull is ever uncovered, you're out, since there's no way you can raise anymore, so you can't win. 3.- If the last 2 players are revealed to only have flowers left, the game automatically ends, with whoever has more points or cards winning.
and a few others: If you hit your own skull, you select which card you lose. If you hit someone else's, that player is the one that blindly removes a card from you. The start player each round is the challenger from the previous round. (whoever had to start flipping cards)
Do you have to have a coster on the table to challenge? Cause it seems likely that on any given hand one would rarely want to put a skull down first, as you then can never challenge or raise on that round and thus not gain a point. (or rather you could only go as far back as one before your skull.)
@@Segphalt Yup, it is required for everyone to have at least 1 coaster down before challenging starts. A lot of how Skull works is a lot more defensive. It's less about getting a point yourself and more about stopping the others from getting a point.
The one important part of the rules they seem to have skipped is that instead of up or go, challenges in skull work on a bidding system. A challenge is called, you can up or pass, and bids continue clockwise until everyone else has passed.
The other rule I’ve always played with is that if you flip over your own skull, you do indeed lose a card at random, but if you flip over someone else’s skull, you choose which card you lose.
I LOVE Skull, it's such a lean game, sheer bluffing and nothing else! And a great intro to people who think they don't like board/card games 👌👌 I will say though, either this is a heavily house-rules'd version of Skull or that isn't how the game works... When challenging, *everyone* raises or passes, and once one player is left, they have to be the one to do the challenge, this variant where the next player can just say "nope" makes the person to your left WAY more dangerous... Also just generally not a fan of randomly throwing away a card if you lose a challenge, I think choosing to keep or throw your skull is a much more interesting choice personally, but I have played both versions!
Agreed, every player moving clockwise having an opportunity to raise the bet is super important to Skull, since it reveals more information, and that way Brian doesn't get screwed from Brad's play, for example (I play that whoever played the skull gets to randomly take a card from whoever hit the skull, however)
You mean that if the player to the left says nope, the next player can actually increase the bet, and they will be the one to do it if then everyone else passes?
I play this game with my students a lot (I'm a teacher, and this game can be played even with red & black playing cards). This is a very fun game as it is, but I would suggest you play our modified version: you can turn over any card on the table in any order, you don't have to start from your own. It's much more fun, and it's extremely challenging in terms of psychology. For example: if he has 4 cards and he picks the middle one, was that card a skull or he knew you were looking? with his situation right now, does he want to win (by putting in a lot of flowers) or does he want to trap others first? What went on in his head when he made a bid? It's awesome mind reading challenge. Forcing the bidder to turn over his card first makes the game much, much simpler, and lacks depth. Anyway, I've always been a huge fan of Brian. Glad to see you still enjoying everything like this.
Couple of things missed 1. Once someone challenges the next player can bid higher or pass, you keep going around until everyone but the previous last person to challenge passes. 2. If you reveal your own skull you get to select which card you lose. 3 if you reveal another players skull they select at random which card you lose. I would really like to see this video redone with the correct rules because I love this game!
A lot of comments have pointed out several misplayed rules, but I haven't seen anyone mention this: The challenger always goes first in subsequent rounds, whether they succeeded or failed. The only exception is if the challenger was eliminated. In that case the player whose skull they flipped gets to go first. If the challenger flipped their own skull when eliminated, they choose who plays first in the next round. They lucked out several times where the person that flipped discs was to the left of the last person that went first and they naturally shifted first person to the correct person. But several times they didn't follow this rule. In the practice game, Brad should have gone first in the second round as he scored a point. And in the real game every time Brian lost a disc he should have been playing first in the following round. Other rules they missed that other comments pointed out: After a player bids instead of playing a new disc, everyone that hasn't been eliminated gets a chance to raise the bid or pass. Once you pass, you won't get the option to raise or pass again in that round. It isn't until every other player that hasn't been eliminated has had a chance to bid and passed that the winning bidder becomes the challenger and starts flipping discs. When you flip your own skull you get to secretly choose which disc you will discard for failing. This makes the penalty for bluffing when you have placed a skull less severe as you control what you lose. When you flip an opponent's skull, that opponent gets to pick a disc at random for you to lose for failing. This makes the cost of seeing what an opponent played higher as you lose a disc at random.
I really like the latest videos because they're games you can play with a deck of cards. I mean as rogues we all have decks on us. Why not use them for more fun? It's because they didn't teach the rules correctly. You have two actions, increase the bid or pass. If you pass you are out but your coaster are available for flipping. If everyone passes then the first people has to flip their set. That is what stops people from just saying one, the whole table has an opportunity to increase the bid
It doesn't seem like it was brought up, but I assume on the rare odds that you end up with only one coster left and it's a skull you can no longer win.

I have taught this game to drunk people in noisy bars! Once people know it though, I play with a few small house rules. First, everyone just antes in their first card -- no reason to play those one at a time. Second -- and this is my favorite -- after someone challenges, anyone can raise them. If two people raise at the same time, tie goes to the person who was next in turn order (closest to the left of the last person who challenged or raised). The third one is how I thought the game was played, but I think I like how y'all played better. We always do it that whoever's skull was hit gets to pick the card, so if you hit your own skull, you get to choose which one you toss -- not randomly, but that was always the clunkiest rule to teach. Lastly, we use some little trinket to mark who the first player is, then pass it after a hand finishes. Sometimes that trinket is a a plastic skull or a flower, other times a large coin, other times, a fine glass of scotch.
Ooh, I like that second house rule. Means you’re not shafted by happening to be sitting to the right of the bidder. May have to try it next time I play this!
@@cjappleby88 The proper rules are supposed to be like that anyway. It goes around with people bidding, and only once everyone passes on raising the bidding do you start turning over cards. The weird version they're playing where only one person gets to bid or pass is not in the rules.
@@scragar Yeah I've always understood it to be that way. Snag is that if the person who starts the bidding is on your left you're at the mercy of the rest of the table as to whether you're willing to bid or not. If your right-hand neighbour bids your max, all you can do is pass.
you basically want to challenge to signal that you have a rose and are going for a point....then have someone assume your rose and outbid you. then select your skull... you cant get a point if you played a skull. but noone else will bet on your card being clean unless you look like you want the point
I think you’re technically supposed to be out if you only have a skull card left. Maybe you could theoretically bluff everyone else out, but you likely wouldn’t last long with as many challenges as you’d have to manage to get 1-up’d
Man, you guys stopped being cool. Like seriously, look at the views! Like before people good heartedly joked about "dad hobbies" sigars and all that. Now the channel is back to the content that people originally subscribed for, but for many already lost interest in the channel. And im not here to talk smack, honestly you guys are my most favorite internet personalities. And even though the kind of content the people subbed for is here again, there is no more spark to it. I want your vids to get good again, like even last year your content hecking rocked. But now, eh.... You guys need to save the channel before its too late

The "lost bid" doesnt lose a puck at random. its their choice. and is done in a way that doesnt reveal what it is. has a second level of deceit to it. did they hold their skull for the late game or did they lose it early? It also goes around the table until all but one player doesnt want to bid. not just the next player. But who cares its a 9month old video, amirite? lol

i think im dumb here. i get the idea but 1 person cant bluff or vouch for others .... thats what breaks my brain
Idk youtube takes notif... again
Hey Brian, which do you like more? Liar Dice of Skulls?
Yes.
This really just feels like a more drawn out liars dice
So having a skull in your pile would pretty much mean you can't challenge or your options to challenge are incredibly limited?
you basically want to challenge to signal that you have a rose and are going for a point....then have someone assume your rose and outbid you.
then select your skull...
you cant get a point if you played a skull. but noone else will bet on your card being clean unless you look like you want the point
I think you’re technically supposed to be out if you only have a skull card left. Maybe you could theoretically bluff everyone else out, but you likely wouldn’t last long with as many challenges as you’d have to manage to get 1-up’d
me wants, damn shipping
Man, you guys stopped being cool. Like seriously, look at the views! Like before people good heartedly joked about "dad hobbies" sigars and all that. Even if it was not what the people wanter or expected from the modern rogue, people watched it and enjoyed, but not because this is the content that they want but because you are the people that they like and want to see more.
Oh, you... I'm not sure what you were trying to say, but I definitely noticed the part where you said we were doing the thing that you want. On behalf of the whole team: you're welcome. -Brian
But who cares its a 9month old video, amirite? lol
Yeah the rule teach was wrong. You should really reshoot the video with the correct rules in order to do justice to the game.
Don't joke about people's Mom... That's a good way to get hit or beat up. Js. My friend Dan told everyone this and another friend kept pushing the Mom stuff (he was drunk) and after being told again that night Dan slapped the bumbaclot out him! He didn't talk about Dans Mom anymore lol
This is similar to bullshit or cheat. The card game.
