    FYI, the Macek footage with the famous “Now that’s a Cannon Movie” quote came from the Cartoon Fantasy Organization’s Robotech 5 Year Retrospective in March of 1990. I shot that shaky footage myself. I also appear in this video, which was kind of a surprise. Lol

    I can't get over how good of a story Macek managed to make out of footage just put in his lap like this, and having to deal with the fools at Cannon films.
    "Here is three different anime series, make one story out of all of them" not only does he do it, but knocks it out of the damn park

      I just found these videos watched the 3 in your Playlist. I really enjoyed them you broke it down into something I could understand. You did a better job the Dan over on his galaxy channel. I remember playing with Robotech toys (the cheapest ones you could get in 85) and I watched a few of the episodes. But I lived in Houston at the time and Dallas and Houston had a love hate relationship back then so Robotech wasn't something we got much of at the time so it wasn't something I got into. But I guess I have rambed enough. Have a wonderful day and thanks for the great videos

      Makes far more interesting than what typcally happens to movies and tv shows in America. But some of the shortcutting is typical of US entertainment where making a buck is more important than the quality of the feature or series.

      We hate Harmony gold because they have done fuck all with the series while preventing any battletech series and Macross series with their constant lawsuits over something they don't actually legally own from thriving in the west. They even interfered with an American port of the Super robot wars games which was a crossover of Macross, gundam, Evangelion, Mazinger and a whole bunch of mecha anime that still continues to this day. They have been given many chances and they fuck it up all the time, its clear Carl Maeck was all the creativity they had to offer. Its time to let it go of the license. Also Genesis climber Mospheads, Megazone 23 and Macross will all be getting sequels by at least 2020.

      We can be thankful to Carl Macek but fuck Harmony Gold. But I think should be more thankful to Shoji Kawamori since he is the creator of Macross and he has worked on the designs of G1 transformers, Escaflowne , Mobile suit Gundam, Armored Core, the original Space battleship Yamato and recently even devil may cry.

    One point that stands out in all of this, the fact that they spliced together so many different anime was out of necessity and not because they truly wanted to. I think that the haters never realised that, and the fact that they founded a new place to attempt to release uncut dubs shows that they were truly interested in the shows.
    Not to mention how impressive it is to actually be able to put together something of this sort. Power Rangers did similar, but the only things they actually re-used were the fight scenes. The fact that Robotech was able to make a coherent story from all this and only need a few custom segments drawn is impressive.

Although I knew it was from Japan ( like a lot of kids TV shows back then ) , I didn't realize that the series was a mash up of 3 different series until 1986. This never tarnished my feelings about Robotech at all, even after watching the Japanese versions of Macross , Orguss , and Calvary Southern Cross. I also see comments about Battletech , FASA used Fang of the Sun ( Dougram ) and Crusher Joe mecha for their game , not only Macross. In any case ,@MercuryFalcon , this was a great series to watch , thanks for taking the time to do it. :)

The animation in it made Robotech look bad pretty much. You could see how much they loved making that movie in every scene. Afterward Robotech just went down hill Harmony Gold should have let go of thier fake license so someone else might have continued it in a good way, or in a different way through games or live action. In thier hands it just steadily died and left the US without any of the Macross Series for more then 30 years.

    Hopefully HG will lose exclusivity on the rights in a couple years and other companies can export Macross products outside of Japan including the sequels. If HG still wants to keep making Robotech products, maybe this will convince them to fund something worthwhile to give to Robotech fans instead of trying to sue anyone they think is infringing on their license. Shadow Chronicles was a decent attempt. The animation was consistent but the CG was incomplete, and let's just say that all the women were a little too well-endowed. The story was good and it was great to finally see an older Rick Hunter. It's too bad they haven't been able to fund the rest of the story.

    They hated the first cut of the film because it wasn't violent and action-packed enough, but at the same time they were expecting an audience of mostly children because it was a cartoon. I believe it; we're talking about the same production company that made a series of fairy tale adaptations in the 80s ("Cannon Movie Tales") and seriously considered having Hansel and Gretel end with the witch's house blowing up with explosives.

    Anything after New Generation (MOSPEADA) I ignore. I love Robotech, and understand why Macek and Harmony Gold did what they did at that time with the original series, but continuing to cut up existing series to try to shoehorn it into the excellent original Robotech story line had to stop. Everything after New Generation was ridiculous. Sometimes you just have to know when to leave something alone and let it be what it is. Since Harmony Gold had at the time a good relationship with Tatsunoko, and they were willing to do new animation for them, they should have come up with a completely new and original show with Tatsunoko doing the animation. Instead, Harmony Gold is still flogging Robotech 30 years later, and suing everyone in sight over it. Sad.

And now I honestly have to say, I want to see them if only to witness what a Frankenstein creation it is. But hey, if you just try to get the Robotech continuity out of your mind, I suppose they're pretty cool. I'd like to state I prefer the original Japanese versions of the shows, but ... Well, there you have something wrong:
    - Tatsunoko only have distributions rights to the Macross TV series from 1982, not from the movie Do You Remember Love?.
    Those rights belong to Toho Company.
    Although Tatsunoko is the executive producer of the film, they does not have the rights.
    For the same reason, if Big West happens to make a remake of Macross TV, Tatsunoko would not have rights in that new series remake.
    - The other things, is Onogi never write for Robotech.
    The main reason why the designs and plots from Robotech II, was keep in secret in Japan, wasn't for the fans, was because Tatsunoko sell the rights from Macross, without permision of Big West, Studio Nue nor Artland.
    I don't konow were you read that Hiroshi Onogi colaborate on Robotech II.
    Is not on your link sources...

    Never did got why Tatsunoko didn't let HG get the rights to "Do You Remember Love" with Robotech proving a success there. I doubt "Clash of the Bionoids" was worth it.
    Though... I could've seen Megazone 23's adaptation being set on the SDF-3 and showing just what was going on during "Symphony of Light." As in, the new Super Dimensional Fortress contains an Earth City just like the original Macross to help preserve human culture and B.D. gets in the way of their return to their home planet in order to seize power for himself.
    If they got animators for the new ending, they could add a subplot of Rick being detained by B.D. before Mark comes in to save them (perhaps write him as Rick and Lisa's son). Maybe show Scott arriving and bringing news of Earth's long awaited liberation, ending the whole series on a hopeful note.

    • @LatitudeSky
      @LatitudeSky 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Toho owned the distribution rights to the movie and sold those rights, along with a bunch of other anime movies, to different companies. Peregrine Films ended up with the Macross movie, which got dubbed in Hong Kong, and actually did run on TV in the US. It wasn't really Tatsunoko's fault. Toho was ahead of them in the rights order.

    We actually now fully know the original plans for the "uncut" ver of Robotech the movie, I have some contacts who worked at HG, and the script (timed to a soundless-recut of megazone 23, as the script essentially states how it was to be cut) is avalible with some googleing. Not gonna say where, just look and you shall find.

    the most likely reason most be because the producers from Macross didn't like the idea of their anime being changed
    from what I remember, they had an interview where somebody asked about Robotech and HG, and the response was that they hated the idea that people outside Japan weren't able to enjoy Macross in its original form, limiting the franchise reach due to HG blocking anything Macross related due to them still wanting to retain the IP for Robotech and continue planning that Live Action Movie that been in development hell as long as the Macross and Gundam Franchise combined

    • @MercuryFalcon
      @MercuryFalcon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Micheal Perez my script was based on Carl Maceks account from his book. G.I. Joe did exist prior to 1985 but before Robotech aired the cartoon only consisted of two 5 episode miniseries. In September of 85 they produced 55 episodes for TV giving the series syndication and officially becoming a competitor.
      As for Transformers I guess what Macek meant is that the series didn’t show up on his radar as a competitor but by the end of 85 it’s popularity had grown exponentially.

    Too bad that bad decisions were followed by bad decisions. They got stuck in a flawed compromise which required ever larger shoehorns to try to make a way forward.
    Robotech should have went the Toonami route. Robotech should have been a platform for all Japanese animation.
    Macek did a lot of good. The voice talent and incidental music he used was the best heard In TV animation in two decades.
    His narrative approach was sadly too narrow, and restrictive.
    He realized this I think, and this is why he helped to found Streamline.

    • @kicapanmanis1060
      @kicapanmanis1060 ปีที่แล้ว

      He improved Southern Cross and Mospeda which is a good thing in my book. Also, he needed the large episode count to even get it on TV to begin with, not like he combined them for the lulz. Toonami also wasn’t an option in the 80s.
