New COVID player here. Literally my thought was, “well I can’t spend money traveling or going to musicals or concerts, so might as well buy that Brian May BMG Special I’ve been lusting over and see if 12 years of classical violin translates to guitar.”
(Results so far, if anyone’s curious: my wrist vibrato from violin really helped with string bending!)

I have 14 guitars in my arsenal currently, most of them I've owned for a lot of years including my 69 Tele that I bought in 72 in a used guitar store when I was 12 years old. I've sold a few guitars over the years and regretted getting rid of almost every one of them at some point. I guess I buy them because I love something specific about that individual guitar, and it just pains me to part ways with one. I guess my kids will have to take the profit on mine when I'm gone, or sit around remembering how they loved when I played this song, or that song on that guitar, or the other one..... not a bad way to be remembered if you ask me!

Quote “every time a Gibson comes in it sells immediately”. Then is that Gibson Custom 355 in Cherry on the back wall is a optical illusion.
Sell it if it’s no been played in 6 months, keep if every time you play it it inspires you or makes your ears tingle and puts a grin on your mush

Third and final comment regarding building a collection I started playing guitar at the end of last summer. So that would be July 2019. I now own a Strat, an acoustic Redondo special, and my jazz master is on the way. So yes us beginners buy multiple guitars. I also have a Chibson I set up for a slide.A lot of the process for a beginner is finding out what you like I had a Gretsch and I sold it because it was a one trick pony. And I had a PRS and I sold it because the pick ups (85/15s) were so over engineered they were devoid of any character, They had “accentuated treble” which meant ear piercingly screechy no matter what you did. Full closure I am autistic and have sensory issues so someone else may like them. But Fenders just feel and sound so much better to me.

I too find a PRS to be extremely overrated. If not for their looks, they sound like Ibanez to me, and Ibanez does themselves best. Neat company, and really cool owner, but I'm not getting on that bandwagon.

It's crazy. I've wanted these 4 guitars for about as long as I can remember, so selling them, even at this peak would be crazy in my mind. That said, I was in my local Guitar Center and they had 2 Slash models (Appetite and November), a Blood Moon (GC exclusive), a tri-burst 60's model (also GC exclusive), Traditional, Classic, Special, and a Tribute Les Paul! They also have a right and left-handed 61 SG in Cherry, SG Tribute, SG Standard, and SG Special; along with a black flying V. That's GC VA Beach, which is driving distance from you guys for a weekend guitar safari.

I genuinely think it will. The truth is that it isn’t actually dead (and has never been) it’s just been under the radar out of the mainstream spotlight for the last 10-15 years. However, if younger people (ie: the demographic who buys music and therefore drives what is “mainstream”) start rocking out then it will be back with a vengeance into the mainstream spotlight.

I have a 4th one I'm having more difficulty moving because it has upgraded pickups (priced accordingly). I think I'll delist it, put the original pickguard back in, and sell it for almost double what I paid 13 months ago. None of the ones I sold were priced particularly high when I sold them, just used gear a couple of years ago was fairly cheap if you kept an eye for bargains. I just got lucky and bought the right gear at the right time and now I'm selling the right gear at the right time. The market is nuts! I have just heard too many horror stories of people selling their prized guitar for very little and how they wish they still had it. Mot that I have any super expensive guitars to begin with... but they all play really well. I have had them all set up, adjusted, frets leveled and polished etc. They play like one would think the more expensive guitars would play.
Anyway, back to sell or keep.... inhave a weakness for gear... especially guitars! I am a confessed, non-apoligetic, non-recovering guitar hoarder. LOL. I still have my first electric and acoustic from 40 years ago and would never part with them (they play well... but both were gifts from my dearly departed parents.)

This happened a month and a half ago,I have a Gibson firebird I bought brand new, then I found the les paul of my dreams bought it and never played the firebird it just sat in the case, I then saw on guitar center website a used Marshall DSL40 listed for $464, and that’s the amp I wanted so I thought I would see if I could trade straight up, they told me they would give me $450 for the guitar and put it on the wall for $898, I replied don’t care about the money I want to trade for that amp, $16 dollar difference for a used amp and they told me “no we can’t do that “ I’m thinking you can’t have more than $250 in that used amp and you won’t trade for a guitar you already told me you’re going to sell for $900, I could’ve paid the difference but I took my guitar back home and put it in the closet, that’s my Birmingham Alabama Guitar Center experience, btw that only had half a wall of guitars hanging up for sale

I think that the best advice for at-home musicians is, "don't try to be a business." Buy what you want to play, not what you think will appreciate in value. Sell what you don't need or don't play, at fair market value. Leave the profit-making to the dealers. All that being said, after 60 years on this Earth and 45+ playing guitar? In six months the used market will have a LOT of inventory, and there will be some natural depression in pricing. Supply and Demand is what it is.

I am also one of those people that bought a ton of guitars since covid started. A year ago I owned 1 Taylor acoustic. I’ve been playing since 7th grade. I’m 39 and had put the guitar down for at least a decade. A year later I have purchased around 50 guitars, kept around 20, and have made a HEFTY profit on the rest of them. I don’t think I’m going to ever go back to a real job, and now I play everyday and am a better guitarist than I’ve ever been.

It’s a sellers market with a very slight taper. It’ll crash in the next 12-18 months. That’s why I’m stacking Gibson’s . When the market crashes, I’ll sell one or two Gibson’s and buy 6-10 nice imports. And with new imports wanting 12-1500$ people would rather buy Gibson’s if they’re treading in that territory. I like my ESP’s , Schecters , Ibanez, LTD’s. But Gibson’s always hold or go up. I snagged 5 top shelf Gibson’s in the last few months. I could very well get close to doubling my money if I sold them right now. But I’m gonna hold out until I see the slide on the imports. I can’t lose money. Worst case scenario I hold onto the Gibson’s and buy imports I’ve been wanting when the market crashes. And it will.

I’m sort of at that same point right now. I really don’t want to sell anything I currently own, because I did that a lot when I was younger and almost always regretted it later.
However, there is a lot to be said for upgrading from a handful of good guitars to one excellent one. I’ve been thinking about a Fender Custom Shop Telecaster for awhile, but in the last couple of months I’ve become extremely interested in a Novo Serus T. They look great, sound amazing, and at least on paper it seems like I could get a guitar that would appeal to me from their options. However, I have yet to see one in person and until they reopen their showroom in Nashville I don’t think I will. I’m ready to commit to one if the design works for me in terms of size and feel, but I’ll just have to wait and see.
On the acoustic guitar side I have two that I’ve been looking at for a couple of years and a new model released in 2020 that has gotten my attention. Once I decide between those I don’t foresee ever shopping for another acoustic.

Same here, (old and learning new tricks). 2 Taylor Academy series, Breedlove Pursuit, all 3 concert bodies, a baritone uke and Ibanez semi-hollow for the variety, and a Vox Mini3 amp sounds great with acoustic-electrics, too. Best thing about guitars is that a decent guitar is half the price of a similar quality banjo, and the neighborhood dogs are less likely to howl along compared to banjo or mouth organ (harmonica). Learned Chris McKee's mantra, too: "The best guitar is..." "...the one you're making music with."

I’m with both of you. I don’t want to sell anything I own either. I started playing when I was a teenager in the late 80s, but quit in 1999 and sold everything I had except for my favorite amp (in case I started playing again one day). I started back a few years later and I still have everything I’ve bought since except for that favorite amp that I didn’t sell and the first guitar I bought when I started back up. That guitar and amp were both stolen 10 years ago. I’m still sick about the amp, but the guitar was really only sentimentally valuable. However, I have replaced both which much better guitars and amps in the last 10 years.
I will admit that in the last few weeks the idea of have one really nice electric guitar, one really nice acoustic guitar, and then one more of each that’s slightly less nice has started to cross my mind. For the record, by really nice I mean in the $5,000 or so range and for the slightly less nice it would be selected from what I currently own. I’m so amp obsessed that I would never be able to do it with amps though. I would also have to keep a bass, and my 1957 Fender Mandocaster isn’t going anywhere as long as I’m still breathing.
