    John tells it and shows it as he can see it...
    Watch right to the end and the cows even get into it!
    Pictures tell a thousand words!
    Thanks again John for recording and sharing this interesting farming life.

    We bought home some buckets of charcoal from a big tree that burnt out in the bushfire and put it in our home garden beds along with a drum of cow dung.
    At the moment I got the best crop of greens veggies that I ever saw.

    Thank you so much for your effort so we can learn from your experiences, even though we need to be aware that we have different climates. I'm from Slovenia and we don't have as little rain as you, but our summers are getting drier and there are more strong storms than before. When I watch you, I would just come to your aid, so I'm happy with your casual approach to work. May God protect you and your family!

    They may have been eating after picking through that dodgy old baleage. Our Organic vet recommends offering charcoal free choice when feeding stored feed to help cows if they get a bit mold or such that upset their rumens. They will eat it and the upset causing agent will be absorbed.

    • @farminglifeaustralia6716
      @farminglifeaustralia6716  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe from time to time they just eat a bit if they are a bit crook? If you have cattle here from away with the Lantana they will eat the lantana and die and if you can get charcoal into there diet it reduces losses. I have just bought some rollers to make a crushing mill and hope to start putting Biochar in the feed next year. John

    Thankyou so much for sharing this. I am madly making biochar. So far I have 6 chaff bags full. We are surrounded by bushland so part of my reason for doing it is to reduce the fuel load around our property. Especially as there is a RFS planned burn for this Summer around our entire property. I was wondering how it would go around some of the native trees. So I have mixed a bit of decayed leave litter with the biochar and put it around one of the trees. Another lot I put in a horse feed bucket and poured seaweed solution. Your video has inspired me to keep going with my journey of feeding our very sandy depleted soil. :)

    • @farminglifeaustralia6716
      @farminglifeaustralia6716  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eventually even if you dont inoculate the char it works and the longer its there the better it works. Sometimes when you put it on if you dont put enough good stuff in it it will draw out any goodness into the char but inoculating it will stop this, urine is a good source of nitrogen and char takes it in quickly. John

    may be by incorporating the "Johnson-Su bio-reactor fesults with the "Young Red Angus" method of application to the soils, your biochar can see more of a results of good pasture growth in them,,,,,

    Good Day John, Was wondering do you use a broadleaf herbicide like Grazon to kill the Broadleaf weeds in your hay paddock?

    • @farminglifeaustralia6716
      @farminglifeaustralia6716  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I try not to use sprays we use very little in fact I couldn't tell you the last time I sprayed. The hay isn't much of a problem if I get areas of weed I plow them in the dry months and plant whatever I am using and do everything I can to promote the growth of the plants I want. I would rather have the odd weed in my hay than feed my cattle poison. Thats not to say there is no place for sprays but its not my go to option. John

    good to see the use of biochar on your farm, great attempt to green your pastures. May I suggest you look into Dr David Johnson and wife-s efforts in AU with the "Johnson- Su Bio=reactor" Seems that their mixtures do great at growing crops (including grassland) and uses many of the inputs you are using to make compost. Good Luck with your efforts

    I found a free source of rice hulls/husks delivered by 18 wheel trucks. Experimented with biochar with it. Mostly successful after a disaster or two. Mixed with chicken manure. A bit too rich but successful. Don’t know what grain sources you have there but you might give it a go. Here the mills will give it away and occasionally deliver it for free. Just a thought.

    • @farminglifeaustralia6716
      @farminglifeaustralia6716  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot for that. We don't have any grain growing in our area. But we do have a huge supply of hardwood that needs cleaning up. I don't mean live trees I am talking about dead trees from cyclones and limbs that fall that sort of thing. John

      @@farminglifeaustralia6716 yeah, we get hurricanes here that knock over large patches of trees. Wood is a bit more labor intensive to convert to biochar than the rice hulls for me. I also spread the whole unburned hulls over the garden about 6 inches deep and tilled it in. Some say it’s good and some say it’s not. I will find out in the spring. Thanks for the vids. Interesting stuff.
