- Three super talented dogs have learnt to drive a car in New Zealand. After months of training they can start the engine, steer and accelerate. Report by Rob Gillett.

We missed the flying car mark, but reached cars that can drive themselves and dogs that can. I’d say we still did pretty darn good!
The point is to raise awareness about animals in shelters. Many people have a stigma against shelter dogs and feel they are inferior to dogs from a breeder. This is to show people that shelter animals make wonderful pets and are capable of amazing things.
The dog probably knows how to drive stick shift more than most of the drivers in America
There's no way a dog which has barely grasped the accelerator can drive standard transmission.

Yeah I have a service dog. He not only helps me emotionally, but also takes me to doctors appointments. Now that’s one hell of a service dog!

I think the steering should be modifyed even further.
I feel it is easier if the "bike" handle type of steering is easier to learn.
Also she has very hi pitched commands too often. But I'm sure its exciting for her too.

It's to show that dog owners who abandon their dogs, saying they are too stubborn and wild to keep, are actually just bad dog owners.
These dogs were abandoned with that stated reason, and the trainers are emplyees at a dog shelter. The purpose is to get more abandoned dogs adopted.

yes and no. Humans see colors on a three color scale (Red-Green-Blue). Cats and dogs see colors on a two color scale (cant remember which one of those that was missing, but one of the three is missing for them)
5 weeks to get a dog to drive a car. I still can't get my dog to sit on command.
