    A fantastically well thought out video in plain language. Well done sir. The one rule that needed changed and was supposedly not even debated was the ball in a divot rule. Nothing more infuriating than a well struck drive ending up in another player's divot.

    Good summary of the changes. Agree that not being penalised for hitting the flagstick when putting is a significant change - for the better. Often you can arrive at a green where your ball is at the front but the pin is right at the back - so you have to wait until someone walks all the way up to hold or remove the flag. Now you can just get on and putt. There may be a few occasions where leaving the flag in for a downhill putt may be of advantage, but I think that's worth the trade off for faster play in general.

    I had read somewhere that one of the rule changes to speed the game up on the green would be for each person to putt till out, then the next person do the same thing. Would save a lot of bobbing up and down marking your ball when you miss the hole!

    • @AppleBottomJ
      @AppleBottomJ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it does if you have a tap in or a putt you feel comfortable making. If you still have a decent length left, it's best to mark the ball and get a line. This allows you take to focus on making the putt and others putting their ball. (stroke play)

    My frustration with these new rules is why didn't they bring in free relief from being in a divot on the fairway, it must be the most unfair "rub of the green" that there is in golf, and yet they have done nothing to address it with these new rules?

  • @95bochamp
    @95bochamp 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Regarding being able to re-place a previously marked ball on the green, I believe that the ruling bodies should have put more emphasis on the fact that the ball must have been marked in order to allow it to be re-placed. Further, they should have emphasized that a ball which had not been previously marked before the next stroke must be played from the new position. Perhaps these points are implied and don't require emphasis. However, in 30+ years of playing, many rules which are spelled out fairly clearly are very often misunderstood and/or mis-applied.

    Love the new rules. I think it will not only speed up the game, but would help the weekend golfers enjoy the game more. Now what they have to do is put a shorter time limit on the Pros in preparing for a shot. It would not only speed up the game, but make the game more enjoyable to watch on TV.

    • @sloebone7399
      @sloebone7399 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frank Jacono - I have the opposite view, I think most of the new rules are unnecessary and will slow down play. Removing loose impediments in bunkers and hazards takes more time than not removing them. The flag stick rule will slows things down. You still can’t ground your club behind the ball in a bunker. They still have red and yellow stakes marking “penalty areas”. I could go on.
      I don’t see anything that will speed up play.

      Frank, I agree with you on speeding up play. Nothing frustrates me more than watching a foursome on the green taking 10 minutes to putt out. The pros set a very poor example re: the time they take to putt.

    • @sloebone7399
      @sloebone7399 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Robarge - when one stroke can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, you really can’t blame the tour pros for being thorough. Their livelihood might depend on it. Plus they have the skill to use the extra information they get.
      The guy in front of you at the local muni just needs to putt the damn ball and get out of the way!

    I used to be the club handicapper and studied the rules very carefully. It has been two decades since then and I am amazed at the number of differences that are now commonplace. It really doesn't matter as long as everyone on the course is playing by the SAME rules. Yet I laugh to see how far we have come from "the ball should be played as it lies" from the earliest days of golf.

    A great help!
    I especially liked the shown examples (for example, the one where the player dropped the club on the green and moved the ball) to illustrate what might happen.
    Question: the example you showed about "unplayable in a bunker". That ball certainly could not be played toward thd flag, I agree, but it could (and should?) have benn played out sideways. When do you deem unplayable?

    • @phantomwhite7972
      @phantomwhite7972 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A player can deem his ball to be unplayable at any time. You could call a ball unplayable in the middle of the fairway if you really wanted to.

    • @interestedbystander196
      @interestedbystander196 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@phantomwhite7972 OK, I didn't know that. My buds and I tend to play that the playing partner(s) have to agree unplayable before you can take it. Social games, etc., and we are pretty fair with it.
      My example about the bunker we would have had to play sideways, hence my question.
