For someone who gets out to the range once a month or so, will I still need to replace mine every 6 months, or will they last a lot longer? Do they get stiff when exposed to elements, or even if stored in their special shell?
You can use either the ep3, ep4, or ep7 because they offer the right amount of protection when the cap is opened to protect you from loud noises and still be able to play your instrument at the right volumes. Whenever i try to play an instrument with regular foamie earplugs, its impossible to play at the right volume because i cant hear it properly. But with the ep4 i can still hear it while being protected from the constant noise level of 85db when the band is playing.
I'm not gonna lie, six months to replace the EP3's, I've been using mine for a good 4 years now, for shooting, and they're still going strong. Just a little bit of ear wax has build up in the flanges, and in the canal
childs play. I've had my pair since I got out of the Marine Corps in 2010 I still use them. I've kept good care of them and still look like new. There are no signs of wear. There's no cracking or tearing in the material.

Hell no. Ive had mine for 9 years almost 10. As long as you keep good care of them and inspect them they will last you a long time
Which set of ear plugs are best for musicians?
