Just finished watching the film, I’ve seen it in parts before but never really sat down and actually watched the whole thing and now that I did, I checked TH-cam for more information on it because when I really like something I want to know more. Thanks for this commentary. In this and other analyses I've seen, no one makes the point that Alice, who admits to having fantasies, turns down the older man and the party, when she could easily have indulged herself without Bill ever finding out. Bill, who denies his darker thoughts, is the one who goes through one shocking experience after another. He finally realizes that it's not the fantasy or dark thought that is the issue, but the active decision not to act out on these thoughts that makes the person who they are.

If I may add something, in all moments of temptation, we actually don't know what Bill would have done. He doesn't clearly refuse the forbidden fruit because each time his choice gets interrupted. Before he sleeps with Domino, Alice calls. When he tries to proceed with Domino's friend, she stops to tell him that Alice is HIV positive. At the house, the prostitute chooses him not to sleep with him, but to warn him that he's in danger, and she does this twice, even stealing him from another prostitute to warn him a second time. She seems to have chosen him specifically because he stuck out like a sore thumb, for reasons that Ziegler later pointed out, and also because he was wearing a Volto mask, which in Venetian balls was a "commoner's" mask. So in truth, it wasn't Bill's good character and will power that spared him; it was external intervention.
As for the costume seller, it's very likely that he was trafficking his own daughter, and in order to cover it up the night before they played it off as if he "caught" her. He, like the upper classes, is running a human trafficking ring. This ties in to the end as Bill's own daughter gets led away by the two strange men.
My interpretation of the film is that failing to protect high values, even in the mind, leads one down a dark path of chain events that initiate an unstoppable outcome of evil.

Thanks for your comments. That's really interesting about Bill's mask being that of a commoner, that fits in with a few other thoughts I've had about Bill being a social climber, and of course some of the themes in the original novel. What you mention about intervention is really cool and interesting too. I was just talking earlier with a commenter about the parallels with a Christmas Carol, and how the film could be looked at as a fable, and how it could be about Bill and his life choices. Really interesting points, much appreciated.

@@johnrenneysboneyardcinema This movie certainly makes for great conversation. I think you got it right about Bill being a social climber, which his choice of mask reflects. And also this movie being a fable about choices.
One other interesting point is the question of who the true villain is. In my opinion, it's Alice. She was unable to manage her own jealousy at seeing Bill with two attractive females - even though she herself was with an attractive man at the time - and she immediately projected infidelity on to Bill. Worse, she proceeded to drag out her own desires for infidelity, so she planted the seed of insecurity and jealousy in Bill. She killed his faith and trust in her, sending him out into the night, where he found real darkness. And even though he narrowly escaped in body (only through the sacrificial act of the prostitute), he has now made his family a target for the society probably forever. All because Alice was unable to manage her own unfounded, projected jealousy. Even at the end, she is unable to give him the security that their marriage is forever. She loves him only for the moment. And she will string him along like this, seeding uncertainty in him, controlling his emotional state according to her needs.

@@Amadeus_2061It sure is a great movie, more so than the critics gave it credit for I think. I agree, Its definitely a film about jealousy. Jan Harlan Kubrick's producer said it was 'a film about the sexual jealously of the mind'. And like you say, I think Alice did sow the seeds of jealousy and allowed for doubt and more darkness to enter their lives. Bill and Alice are their own worse enemies, they have everything but still need to create this awful drama in their lives to fill the void. It is a story of the darkness within us indeed. And those words you mention 'I love you for this moment' say it all. It's all about the games we play. Kubrick definitely did want us to talk about this one lol There's a lot say.

I always felt Nicole Kidman's Alice was a stronger performance who I felt manipulated Tom Cruise's which Kubrick had taken Cruise out of his comfort zone.
I would of been interesting to see how Harvey Keitel original portrayal of the Sidney Pollack part. From watching Pollack portrayal of Bill's friend is quite like a mentor or father figure which is quite more shocking how sinister Pollack. Whereas Keitel is known for dark complex roles.

I feel it helps to look at this film in terms of who is the protagonist/antagonist. Typically these are clear but not in a Kubrick film. Bill starts as the protagonist but is living in a superficial dream state. He has everything he believes make a valuable and fulfilling life. He believes he's done all the right things until he's faced with Alice's fantasy. His night out experiences present him with opportunities to see what's real- both good and bad. It's like A Christmas Carol, except ultimately Bill chooses to return to his empty superficial marriage making him the main antagonist. Granted Alice is definitely an antagonist as she values (even from the start of the movie) what the people at the party represent (total depravity), but because we see through Bill's perspective, it is his choices that matter most.

Thanks for watching and your comments. I agree with many of your points especially on A Christmas Carol. I think this is a very important part of the story and is perhaps why the film is set at Christmas. You can easily find evidence to show that Bill is shown a glimpse of his past, present and future, surrogating the ghosts for who you wish, be it Domino, Zeigler or Millitch you can take your pick. This narrative structure has been used in storytelling, filmmaking and most importantly to Eyes Wide Shut, fables since storytelling began. Thanks for your well thought out interpretation, much appreciated.

      @frozen1762 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

This is closest to my interpretation. Thats why I don't get it why people think this move is so deep when it's quite simplistic. From the start its clear that he is living a fake life and has a hint of the truth only when his wife is stoned and shows her true contempt for him. I also disagree about idea most people say that it's his perspective, maybe about clean plastic world in the bkg that he thinks is great but in general what he thinks and what Kubrick is showing us as viewers about his wife first is in total contrast; His wife hates him and seems to remain blind about it until the end. He goes on a journey where he thinks he is doing good stuff but at the end choses to go back to a lie. Practically all women in the movie show some sort of positive emotion to him except his wife. I think that mask represents literally that his wife is one of whores random people were fucking at that orgy. The only question is why is he still a cuck? Maybe he is too afraid or so lost that he just can't comprehend reality even after things he saw that night.

@@frozen1762 the fact the his wife is at the party is interesting. It fits metaphorically but she was not at that party, at least. She call him to go home and was home when he arrived. Another thing is that she was drunk and even drunk she refuses to go with the older man at the beginning. She could do a little bit of whoring but chooses not to.

@@frozen1762Like your analysis on EWS. IMO at the end, the daughter is going off with those guys from the party. Also, there are many occult symbols in the toy store. Have heard 24 minutes were removed. Maybe Bill did join them, which his wife was manipulating him to do. That’s why she will have sex with him. And why the daughter is wandering off - the sacrifice of the first born.
Was watching Eli Roth’s series on horror movies. He interviewed Steven King. King thought Kubrick destroyed his The Shining story. King was an alcoholic when he wrote it. Jack is one. In the book, Jack sacrifices himself to save his family. He redeems himself. In the movie, Kubrick had Jack personify evil. No redemption. Some fun facts. When Jack originally shows up, a Playgirl is on the table in the entry. Jack picks it up. Kubrick also added a scene with 2 guys seen through an open door, one was in a dog costume on his knees. In EWS, the young guys say Bill is homosexual. If unnecessary for the story, why have them?

Alice is 'The Pink Panther', a big predatory cat that preys on birds and rabbits at night. The clues are hidden in plain view, embedded into props, gestures, words, numbers, colours, lights and the music. Actors put their noses on clues or point at them with their elbows, index fingers in passing motions, etc. Kubrick would sometimes be happy after 2 takes but in many cases would do say, 80 takes... to get the clues lined up just right, appearing and disappearing, with camera movement and the movements of the actors. Alice has people killed, including Lou, Domino, Mandy, Nick, Bill and Helena.
Bill wasn't actually going to cheat with Gayle and Nuala, nor was he tempted. He puts his hands out, putting on the brakes, stopping them and insisting, where exactly would that be, saying it depends where it is. They were sent by Alice to make Bill look bad, distract him and to keep his attention off of Alice herself. Alice has sex with Harris just after the first dance at the party. Harris is the 6'3" man that works for Victor. Alice checks him out when she and Bill walk into the ballroom and Harris bobs, just slightly, very easy to miss, moving his arms, up and down.
Bill is profiled by Alice, knowing all his weaknesses, doubts, habits and curiosity. She and Victor plan out a series of staged situations to lure Bill into. Through these experiences, he's tortured to death, and will finally die physically later. The 6 guys that attack him on the street and impugn his manhood, the woman selecting him at Somerton and being taken from him in less than 1 minute, and coming back to Bill without her panties on, Sally telling Bill that Domino has HIV when Domino has actually been murdered, etc. It's all to weaken Bill, to terrify him, torture him and nearly paralyze him and so that he will blame himself when Helena's abducted. He will implode, maybe even kill himself and Alice will seem like a blameless victim, getting lots of life insurance and free to keep going to gangbang orgies. She's at Somerton, in the circle then in a wig, by the fireplace, having sex on a man's back for Bill to watch.
Rainbow Fashions is all planned and staged for Bill to find. Milich says 5 times that he'll kill his daughter (Leelee). It's said facing her, away from Bill but the threat is actually towards Bill. It's to confuse him and unconsciously/subconsciously terrify him and weaken him. Milich taunts Bill the next day, fake offering him Leelee for sex but it really means that Milich probably had illegal contact with Bill's daughter, Helena, at Somerton as she was there. It's all an act, with an indirect message and intent, meant to cause Bill huge confusion and conflicting ideas and emotions.
Bill's love with Domino was real and mutual, hence the green lens flare 'emerald' that appears on Bill in Domino's last shot.
The film ends with 'the kiss of the Pink Panther', a pink light behind Bill, but by his mouth. After Alice says 'F**k.' Kubrick exposes this pink light, just a tiny bit more, to make the point, then the screen goes black and the credits and Shostakovich piece play.
Alice wouldn't say 'forever' because she knows it's not.
It is physical for Alice, listen to how she describes seeing the young naval officer: after just a glance she was so wet and tingly, her vagina was so on fire, she 'could hardly move'. She gets all that and much more through the Somerton sex group.

Thanks for the comments. It’s a theory I can get behind. It makes total sense if you look at the film from the ‘Most Dangerous Game’ point of view. This suggests that Bill is being played like a pawn in a game. It’s very prevalent in the novella to the point where the protagonists inner dialogue asks himself ‘is this all a game’ and he wonders if he is being played and laughed at by the upper class for amusement. It’s an age-old story line when dealing with class or a fall from grace, see The Most Dangerous Game or a modern retelling in The Game. I think looking at Kubrick’s return to noirish tone and tropes in the film more than suggests this classical story line of a man caught in a game could be part of it and could be explored. Cheers and thanks for watching.

Its as if he has become complacent in life and it takes this night of emotional turmoil to keep him in check and realise what he actually has and how everything including love, life and family is so fragile and can break if you take them for granted. I think there are a lot of Hollywood and media based undercurrents in Kubrick's films. Think of the news and media representation of the newspaper Joker works for and the film crew trying to make a war film in the middle of a real war in Full Metal Jacket.
I recently had a conversation in the comments about the casting of Cruise and kidman and what that could represent and I'm petty sure this is a critical look at Hollywood. The depiction of Domino and how women are portrayed in the film, I think is also a very critical look at on screen representation in Hollywood of the 90's.

I'm not at all sure that an expose of Hollywood was a theme. Johnrenney said that he read the source novel, and I think that anyone who is really interested in the film should do the same. Schnitzler was working in Vienna at the same time as Freud. Freud apparently turned down an opportunity to meet Schnitzler worried that he might meet his doppelganger. Freud of course was looking at what drives the human psyche, and the book is similarly fascinated with psychosexuality, the life of dreams and fantasy, the link between sex and death. I would suggest that this was also the main fascination for Kubrick too, so reducing this to an expose of Hollywood is stretching it too much.

There is so much focus on Hollywood and the wealthy elite that everyone ignores the tree stump in their own front yard. Organized sex parties take place in middle-class America every day. People choose to focus on Hollywood because it is an easy target that the "normal" people wish to cast spiteful aspersions upon. The only thing different about Hollywood is that they have a better club house and better looking people.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the final scene in the film where their daughter is seen walking towards the two older gentlemen while they ignore her and isn’t seen again. In your analysis, you say that Bill realizes he wouldn’t be the kind of person to sell out his daughter, but the final scene implies that he is or at least he’s focused on something else leaving his daughter to wander into that kind of life.

Thanks for watching and for your kind and thoughtful comments. This is a tuff one lol
I’ve thought about it quite a bit over the years. I think you can say that there is an element or sub plot of the film that is about the concept of grooming. This could be evidenced in the way that the Milich’s daughter mirrors the prostitute that Bill meets. I’m positive that their similarities were intended for us to be seen by Kubrick. The colours used in their scenes, the stance of the characters is almost identical, and I think it’s implied that Milich’s daughter will turn into a version of that prostitute. You could say she is groomed by the powerful or suited men she is seen with, and this is enabled by Milich for personal gain.
If you follow down that line of thinking, showing the character of Bill’s daughter being lured away at the end could be considered the beginning of that grooming cycle. To back up the grooming theory being part of the film, I think there is evidence to say that Bill is also being groomed by Ziegler. Part of the definition of being groomed is “the way that people can be coerced and silenced by people who are charismatic and powerful” and I think that definitely applies to Bill’s relationship with Ziegler and is evidenced in the dialogue when Ziegler tells him “This is between us”.
There is a lot that can be interpreted from the end scene, like the fact it takes place in a toy store at Christmas. This could mean that Bill and Alice buy love from their daughter rather than earn it. I think the fact that she wanders away unattended by Bill, implies that he needs to be less selfless and look after his family, he needs to learn the lesson that having a family means giving away part of yourself, his life is not just about him anymore. I could go on lol but there’s so much to say.
Anyway, that’s kind of my theory on Bills daughter in the end. I’m not committed to it, but I do think there is a sub plot of grooming in the story and if Bill’s daughter is snatched after the camera stops rolling, I think it could be suggesting that this is the beginning of the grooming cycle followed by Milich’s daughter, the prostitute and then the dead girl is where they may end up. Just a fan theory of mine, but I hope that helps answer your question. Thanks again.

@@johnrenneysboneyardcinema thank you for your response. I do believe in the grooming side plot due to all the hints you mentioned. The only thing I gather from the end is that even though Bill resist temptation multiple times when it comes to cheating on his wife, he still is heading towards being a character just like Milich. He wants to believe he wouldn’t be like that but his daughter walking towards those gentleman without him noticing, symbolizes this, I believe. He might be incapable of cheating on his wife, but he still has his demons when it comes to his daughter. The ending might seem positive at first glance, but I think it’s actually very tragic. I like the idea of Ziegler grooming Bill too. I’ve never thought about it that way. I’ve always seen Ziegler as someone Bill wants to be like, but once he is given the opportunity, Bill’s conscience doesn’t allow him to. Thanks again for your reply.

@@dwezel No problem thanks for getting back, I love to talk movies especially ones as layered as 'Eyes'. I agree, I definitely think that the film is a tragedy, the ending leaves me with an empty feeling. Bill and Alice have everything people wish for, yet they make there own tragedy and drama between themselves. And like you say, in the end it's to late and Bill will never have absolutes, just like Alice tells him he can't even be sure of her love. I think its one of Kubrick's most layered films. The man certainly knew how to get us to think.

I also see the setting in motion of a pattern relative to when bill treats the od woman, he saves her life, then it appears that the same woman offers herself as a sacrifice when Bill is revealed. They tell him that what is promised there cannot be changed. So far he hasn't done anything wrong, however at the end scene with their daughter there's a game called the magic circle, I believe what he doesn't realise is that her sacrifice for his life means there is a very real debt that will now need to be repaid by his daughter. Something has been created through a kind of black magic. I'm not convinced he does get to walk away without consequences of his actions. He's stumbled into something way over his head and doesn't even realise the implications that he's now set in motion for future generations.
I think an aspect of the story is be careful of falling into a hellish world which is your own creation through lower choices and desire.
There's also a few references at the end, obviously there's a significant amount of symbolism to the goat and Capricorn, in the context of this film the rituals are all about the beastly aspect of desire and lust not the higher version of divine union. Then there is also the bear and the Barbie, two things the daughter picks up in the store. The Bear is symbolic of winter solstice and the darkness/ hibernation in the cave and the Barbie is plastic. Pretty on the outside but devoid of spirit within. I think it clearly suggests the daughter will now be claimed in the cycle.

I do agree and enjoyed your deconstruction and analysis of the movie, and i'm a huge fan of practically any Kubrick movie save The shining and this one. The main fatal flaw in this one being, Tom Cruise playing it as such a cypher and non-entity - even though he's sort of acting being perturbed and having sexual anxieties.....he doesn't convince me one bit. The relation with his wife is very very coldl, they got all of the trappings and a kid (to which they don't pay a great deal of attention), but relation wise? Umm, i've seen Woody Allen have more passion and horniness in him. It's all sort of done on purpose, TomCruise is not a bad actor, but romance or sexual tension was never his forte. Usually he plays the determined character, but here he's quite the passive floating raft on the high seas of a fake Christmas Manhattan. Ergo with little passion, no convincing sexual tension (at least for me), no real debauchery or sexual heat at the main "orgy" (it is more like a sort of arty Paris catwalk no, the masked audience sitting down and watching passively, not a whole lot going on there).
The (grooming) thread i kind of suscribe to, the whole first Ziegler and the drugged prostitute being all a little bit too much of a coincidence, is this all just a set up putting Tom to the test ? Is he ready to join the powerful sexual perverts or is he basically a cypherish passive "romantic" sort of type.......seems the latter. And as the grand master suggest we will come after your family, the daughter is curiously missing and does look purposefully back at the parents in her parting shot. Grooming part 1 okay.......but boy does this whole Pizzagate for the demonic illuminati go nowhere....... not so much as you couldn't make a thrilling film about that, (one could), but it's like Nicole suggests they go fuck (as soon as possible). Both their reactions are underwhelming to say the least - again on purpose.....are we supposed to take this seriously ? Okay let's assume that loving sex and a commited relation are fragile at best..... Credits roll, what happens now , they start to get just a little eensy-teensy bit horny to fullfill their marital duties and then they discover their daughter is gone, kidnapped or pawed by the Illuminati/demonic powerful Democrats )cause hey, Evangelicals and Republicans don't/never do these things right ? LOL.
What next, panic? Why is that whole grooming thread in the movie anyway?
As far as we know from real life, the Weinsteins, the Epsteins, the Prince Andrews, The Trumps, your Diddies and Andrew Tate, your Abercrombie and Fitch.....you groom the naive and the poor with promises and half lies. The ones who will most likely shut up when they reach 18 or 20.
The whole rather carefully set up narrative thread of powerful satanic rituals is just left dangling with nowhere to go (and for sure weak doctor Cruise will not crack the case) and no consequence or point Besides it's not the subject of the movie ....
Power corrupts has been done in other and better movies, multiple times. And again it's not what the movie purports to be ?

In looking into the aftermath of the film - Kubrick loses a daughter to the Scientology cult and Kidman loses two children to the cult following her divorce from Cruise. Life imitating art?
As others have written, although the film takes place in NYC and shot in London, it is really a tale about Los Angeles/Hollywood and all the wannabe's and double lives in that city. All the young women in the film are types of those 'performing talents' trying to break into the movie and music industries and are shown as having sex with the Hollywood establishment (to pay their dues with their bodies), whether it is a figurative casting couch in Ziegler's bathroom, prostituting/escorting, at a Hollywood party where they are expected to promiscuously service the male and female members of the upper echelon of the Hollywood cult.
Alice and Ziegler's wife are types of women who have previously paid their 'industry dues' as once young aspiring talents and still participate in the licentious activities as initiated members of the cult - hence the mask placed on the pillow when Alice returned from the orgy/bacchanal before Bill returns. We also see Alice grooming her daughter for a similar fate as she is preprogrammed to climb the Hollywood ladder and cater to rich and older men - fugitively portrayed as the two older men who lead her away in the final scene.
The mansion ceremony with the satanic circles and mysterious red cloak high priest are meant to convey the hidden evilness of the Hollywood upper circles, and that only the initiated (same shared values whether politics, sex, morality, wealth, etc.) can be part of the Hollywood cult either in the inner or outer circles. The mask represent their hidden and sordid lives in contrast to the faces they show the public. At the end of the film, Bill's eyes are now wide open to the inner grammar of decadent Hollywood scene and its sordid and corrupt nature and the realization that his sexually unsatisfied wife and daughter are lost to the cult as he breaks down now knowing the cost of success in Hollywood. It ends with Alice telling him nothing is permanent, the Hollywood dream is just that, a dream not the reality of selling oneself over and over for success and wealth, to live in the moment, and all that counts is having sex and gratifying immediate desires.

I believe Stanley Kubrick had a contract where only he could edit his movies and the company wanted him to take out about 30 minutes of.it and he wouldn't. After his death they edited the movie the way they wanted and I believe the day he died was 666 days before the date of 2001 A space odyssey. Also, Nicole Kidman's father left Australia for Singapore to stay with his other daughter because they were looking at him for improper advances on a child. His death in Singapore was a little suspicious. Another thing to think about is Bill's strength, he could have had sex with them women but he had the strength to mot do it. Just like I think r**e is a sign of weakness not power because they were to weak to control their urges. Yeah, I could be wrong about that.

I haven't seen all of Stanley Kubrick's movies. But I've seen this one. First off, mad respect for Tom Cruise. He's a confident action star first and foremost but in this film, he's vulnerable, uncertain and doesn't seem like a man who could do all the insane stunts he does in his other movies.
Second, I think a very strong case could be made that Stanley Kubrick was THE greatest filmmaker of all time. Outside of Eyes Wide Shut, I've also seen The Shining, The Killing, Doctor Strangelove and Fear and Desire. Granted, Fear and Desire was a clumsy mess but outside of that, Kubrick delivered banger after banger consistently for 4 decades. All of his movies are personal, apart from Spartacus which was a for hire job, but they're also unique at the same time. You can tell the same man is behind the camera and that could have become stale but Kubrick, much like George Lucas, wasn't content to repeat himself.

Thanks for watching. Yeah, I agree he's one of the greats of filmmaking, his compositions and his style are like no one else's. 100 other Hollywood directors could line up the same shots with the same lenses and still not capture his magic. I was watching Full Metal Jacket just last week and the way that he shoots that ending in what looks like the fires of hell, when they are at war with the sniper is so horrific to watch, yet I still marvel at each shot. The zooms from the snipers POV, that tight close up of Joker when he finally does what he has written on his helmet is real, raw and emotional filmmaking.
I'm so glad you mentioned Cruise's vulnerability in Eyes Wide Shut, I've had so many negative comments about my take saying that its a surface analysis and that its about so much more and I'm wrong about how I feel, and I guess there is so much more in it to be honest lol But my take was always how I related to Bill's vulnerability and the feelings that he must be going through, for me its his best role. And the movie is all about the complexity of human emotions and the war inside of us all, as we wrestle with out own feelings.
Thanks again for watching and sharing your comments I really enjoyed reading your take.

Simply put: Bill's worldview or reality gets shattered. He attempts to reconstruct his worldview based on how he "thinks" the "elite" do things. But he quickly comes to realize that this is a very bad idea, and the ideals of the "elite" are not what he really wants.
Bill represents the upper middle class social climbers, who suddenly become aware of a "dark side" they are dealing with.
The big question is: do they (Bill) continue to enable or ignore what they have "accidently" become aware of, Or do they just decide to forget it all.

Bill could have slept with the costumer's daughter. I think you overlook the Freudian aspects of the novel and the film. Are dreams of infidelity equivalent to actual infidelity? Bill's unrealized infidelity is no more consequential than Alice's dreams of infidelity, yet both produce feelings of guilt. Whether the Mansion was a playground for the rich (ahem, Jeffrey Epstein) or a criminal conspiracy to silence Bill, the doctor's sense of guilt leads him to perceive threats. So much of this is Freudian symbolism.

Thanks for watching and for your comments. I’ve had a few conversations about this with others too, many have mentioned this in consideration as to why the film is set at Christmas as this bears no or little relation to the source novel, so the emphasis must be for a reason. There are elements of sacrifice and self-punishment in the film that of course have biblical aspects and the film could be about temptation. We may also consider that Bill has a cathartic realisation and is taken through the open door. It is a very interesting interpretation and one that could be spoken about more in depth. It great to hear different interpretations, Do you have any more thought on this?. Thanks again.

@@johnrenneysboneyardcinema It's difficult to talk about, because it is doubtful we have the same experiences. But my experiences are "last century", same as Stanley's. A few points - we see a Sociology textbook in Domino's bedroom. The nineties were a time when there were a number of major magazine articles pitching the idea that sex work was a good way for a girl to pay her college bills. Girls were doing it, there was nothing wrong with it, they enjoyed their work. I remember reading articles like this. (This would be completely unacceptable to Christians.) Then, Millich I believe, is on one very subliminal level, a Jesus figure. Beard, long hair, (bath)robe. His switch from the first scene with the Asian men to the second scene says it all. He has changed. He has accepted the unacceptable. This is equivalent to all the changes Christianity embraced just last century - sex before marriage, shacking up, illegitimate kids, divorce, homosexuality (in some churches), gay marriage was coming in at that time. What upset the Christian grandparents didn't upset the boomer grandchildren. Also, Christmas is, apparently, only about wrapping presents, shopping for presents, waiting for presents, asking for presents. Nothing more. Oh, I would say, at that time, taking your kid to see the Nutcracker performed would have been considered what a good, college educated mother did at Christmastime. (Alice doesn't take her kid to the ballet, so I would rate her as not trying very hard to be a good mother.) How the Grinch Stole Christmas is the book on the table during the breakfast scene with the TV, the cartoon, and Alice reading the paper. I think this is a social engineering comment. There may be a subliminal Grinch face or two hidden in plain sight in the film.

@@watermelonlalala Thanks for getting back to me on this and sorry for the late reply. I appreciate the care and thought that you put into your answer. My favourite thing about movies is how we can all watch the same work and have a different interpretation and also share evidence to support it and discuss it.
I was raised in a catholic environment and as you say, I feel that does often effect the way that I interpret and experience work. This is especially true in the way that I see character realisation as catharsis and sometimes how I relate to characters punishing themselves for their sins.
I’m 100% with you on Dominos’ character. I always believed that was definitely an intention, looking at set dressing such as books is a key aspect that Kubrick used in a lot of his work to let us know the internal dialogue of characters. Similar in Clockwork orange when we see the inside of Alex’s head when we enter his bedroom. I do believe Domino is a reflection of the treatment of women in the media of the late 90’s. Kubrick was very astute at letting the zeitgeist of the times subliminally seep into his work and was often at the forefront of exploring media as a tool for controlling public opinion, I visited the Kubrick archives at LCC in London and Kubrick’s research papers and books show that subliminal messages were always on Kubrick’s mind, throughout almost all of his film projects. There are literally mountains of boxes which contain his reading lists and influences.
I appreciate you sharing Your thoughts on the subliminal look of Millich, as you say our experiences are different and I would never have thought of the character that way, had we not had this conversation. I really appreciate you sharing you thoughts and helping me learn how others interpret film. For me this is what starting this channel is all about. Thanks again if you have any more thoughts please let me know, it’s great to discuss and learn from others perspective. Cheers.

The film is a metaphor for the typical American upper middle class male who believes in the American dream and doesn’t realize that he is being manipulated by elites just as he would have been in the old world order of European nobility. The first clue is the movie poster itself where Bill is kissing his wife and his eyes are shut however her right eye 👁️ is open like the one atop the pyramid. The title could be a metaphor for something that is happening right in front of us but because of the dream we don’t see it but Bills wife sees it because she is a part of it and is trying to trap Bill into the CULT of the elites. She purposely tells him of her fantasy knowing it will drive him over the edge and into the arms of the prostitute who was a setup. Everything that happened afterwards was designed to bring him to the mansion ritual. This is observable by the fact that his friend Ziegler was at the ritual also. How coincidental is that. His wife was aware of the whole plot which is indicative of her right eye 👁️ being open on the movie poster. And she probably put the mask on the bed unless we are to believe that someone snuck into her bedroom and then snuck out unnoticed. So in conclusion I suspect that Kubrick was trying to tell us that nothing has changed and that the American dream is really a nightmare of deception.

I really enjoyed reading this, its great to hear a precise and well thought out interpretation, delivered in an intellectual and friendly way. Wow, loved your insight into Nick Nightingale being a dark magician, a boatman to a forbidden place. That reminded me of professor Marvel from 'Wizard of Oz' with his crystal ball and Dorothy wanting to go on the road with him...
Is Bill a good man? Bill has 5 opportunities to commit adultery in the film. 1. with the two girls at Zeigler's party, 2. with Marion the grieving woman 3. with the prostitute 4. with the prostitute's friend 5. At the orgy party. To me it feels only by shear chance at times Bill eludes to following through with the act and not steered away by morality/ethics or love for his wife. Whether Bill is overseen by some form of divine intervention or the movie plays out in the dream realm, he seems more compelled to cheat on his wife as a form of revenge. I personally feel the movie would of been much deeper if he followed through with the act of infidelity, be seduced and somehow find redemption in the process or not at all.

Hi G-Funk thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. I agree, Bill is out for revenge when he walks the city. It’s interesting that you mention there might be forces at work. It does seem like the world is out to get him for a time. For example, when the drunken jocks bump into him on the street and question his masculinity, that must be devastating for Bill especially after his wife has just implied that he may not enough for her. He can’t satisfy his wife, now he can’t defend himself. I think Bill is knocked down from his pedestal and is at the most vulnerable he has been for a long time and that’s when our resolve can be tested the most and the forces of good and bad can affect us and our choices. Interesting thoughts.

@@johnrenneysboneyardcinema Yeah well said John. I find it hard to sympathise with the Bill character as it feels he never really overcomes the challenges faced before him, just manages by shear luck to evade/survive his escapades along with being confused as to what happened to Nick Nightingale or whether the girl at the party was murdered or merely overdosed from cocaine, which for me gives more credence to the dream world narrative. Always left me wanting more from this film.

But again there are many cool theories that image that Alice in is on the game and is also setting Bill up. Many fans also theorise that the people from the mansion party place the mask there for a warning to Bill, that he must heed their words of warning ‘There will be dire consequences’ and they are watching.
