Kubota BX Maximum Boulder Capacity?

  • The Kubota BX is a small tractor that can pack a punch, but how much can it actually lift? In todays video, I set about pushing the little Kubota BX2380 to it's max load, by moving a bunch of boulders that I had dug out of our gravel driveway.
    In the end, we are able to find the little tractor's breaking point when it comes to weight in the bucket, without shimming the hydraulics.

      I believe most tractors have a larger weight limit for curling the bucket than lifting loads. When you came off the drive to dump the rock you had clearance under the bucket. Were you curled all the way back to put your load closer to the rear? I have had my rear end cantilever because my load was not centered in my bucket. I have an 1850 and am very happy with it for doing my landscaping design work. Stay with what you have unless you are planning to do more construction around the farm. Sometimes bigger is not better. I know you’re pain with rocks since I am just south of Lowell here in Mass. Another enjoyable video. Thanks.

    Nice little experiment. I usually leave the backhoe on the back of mine when I'm doing this kind of heavy lifting. That way there's something around 700lbs of ballast in the rear to counter the front bucket load. These little monsters never cease to amaze me.

  • @sethdunn4412
    @sethdunn4412 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I'd recommend a ballast box or some weights for the rear of the Bota. Not only will this help you keep the tractor on the ground, it'll help save your front axle seals. Keep in mind that when your rear wheels are offset by the load in the bucket, your brakes are not really effective, which can be scary.

    • @TheMindfulHomestead
      @TheMindfulHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The front axles seals are my main concern with operating without ballast... the whole tipping over thing is easily mitigated by just driving carefully and not taking chances.
      I've been going back and forth with a ballast box or weights. I think I am going to go box.

    Nice work! I have a BX23S and have moved many rocks like the large one you moved. The weight of the backhoe really helps ballast on that model. The best modification for the money I have done is Ken's Bolt-on Hooks. They are great for pivoting large rocks back into the bucket and many other uses for stabilizing loads with a 5/16" chain. You really need some more weight out back, and the cheapest would be a ballast box or a hitch attachment that can hold weights. A small rotary cutter (bush hog) is good ballast as well if you ever think you will need one. Great little tractors!!

    Great video and it was nice to see your comments as you worked through moving the rocks. I actually just moved a similar giant rock in my yard with my BX1880. The 1880 had a hard time lifting but I did the same, got the rock in the bucket and a inch or two off the ground moved it to its resting place. The BX is small but man it does more than I figured it could!

    Just bought a 2020 BX2380 with 225 hrs on it. Picking it up Monday. I would have NEVER thought the tractor would have handled that large rock. I have 2 acres and the tractor will mostly be a mower. Am going to put in a large green house and some other stuff such as put in a gravel road but was thinking I would need to rent a big tractor for that. I'll be following your exploits and watching your already done videos to get a better idea of what my tractor is capable of. I think rather then filling my tires I'll just make a rear tray kinda like a mini pickup bed but make it so it can be a dump bed. Then get a 55 gal barrel for counter weight if ever needed. I can just fill it with water when needed.
    Love that Parana tooth bar but honestly would probably never need it with my flat 2 acre property completely covered in lawn. I will be using the bucket to plow snow on my 100 ft asphalt driveway. Will need to figure out how to do that without messing it up with scrape marks. Was thinking of bolting on wheels on both sides of the bucket so I can maintain a 1" scrape clearance for removing the snow. Drill holes, insert short tubes, weld on both sides and then bolt on wheels. The wheels would only be there for snow removal. Who knows maybe wont need to bother with those but really do not want my drive way COVERED with scrape marks though.
    I am considering some kind of edge bar as my bucket does not have one but I'll probably just get a steel bar and bolt that on, or the factory bar. Could make it look like the one you got but really do not need that for my 2 acre lawn, just need a bar to protect my factory bucket edge. Welder/fabricator/machinist so I can build whatever I need. Think I am going to build a nice sun/rain protection canopy that fits on my rops bar lower section also. Do not need a full cab, not going to do snow removal for the 6 hrs at a time....

    • @TheMindfulHomestead
      @TheMindfulHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe some sort of rubber or HDPE edge that you could bolt on? Might scrape the snow without doing damage to the driveway or wearing your edge.

    The B series would be a step up for sure, I have a BX2380 with a FEL, 54" mid mower, 51 rear mount snow blower with quick hitch and rear wheel weights, my unit works OK for my needs.......the loader does have its limitations but it is a lot better than a shovel and wheel barrow.

    I haves moved several large rocks with my BX2380. I remove my front bucket and use a set of straps under the rock then wrap them around the quick attack on the front loader and up it goes. Gives you some extra lifting power since you are not lifting the bucket with the rock in it. I have a weight box with some pea gravel in it and it works great. Did you buy the unit without the backhoe? If you had the backhoe on the back you could lift considerably more up front. I didnt see any weights in back either. These BXs are extremely limited by counter balancing the weight. They lift a lot more than they are rated at and you really can't break a BX without really really really trying to break it(they just simply do not have enough power to break under normal use.)

If I could find 28" Tires for my BX I'd buy and install them if they would fit, even if I had to remount the loader control valve body or flare the fenders and put on spacers.

    observation: That rock IS a rock. Boulders start at 400 lbs. That one looks 275#. I have 1500 rocks boulders on hand. You can see the pile in 1 or 2 of my videos but would not have know it was a pile unless. That aside a Deere 3320 with a rear ballast and front bucket or pallet forks is good for 2000# a couple inches off the ground. At least you can go forward. It is good for 1000# loaded gravel/ sand or dirt at 8.5' to dump over a fence and 1200 or 1300 at 4' high tp lace into landscaping. Run your idle higher for more umpff. And you better have a rear ballast at all times if anything is on the front. Even empty loader. Why? your front wheel bearing are at risk and the Kubota manual probably says so somewhere. And if a Kubota mechanic drives by and sees you without a rear ballast he is obliged by oath to stop and punch you in the back of the head. Maybe take some peas from the garden to boot.

    I bought a BX1800 in 2000, still runs great but I was told not to lift anything in the bucket without some weight in the back, my box blade stays on and I can lift boulders bigger and heavier than those all day. Give it a try.

      If it will be a mower for you, how tight do you have to turn? Do you have a bunch of trees you have to mow around? If mowing is not your biggest use of the tractor, then, GO BIGGER with the b series. You wont be sorry. I just bought a BX2380 because it will be a mower 98% of the time for me.
      I wanted to go bigger but held back due to me needing to mow mow mow most of the time with it. Now if $$ was not an issue for me I would have bought a zero turn mower and got an older cheaper and, "bigger" tractor.
      The BX2380 has that nifty easy to remove front end loader setup so I can mow and then put the loader on only when I need it. That was the reason I stepped up and spent more for the newer fancy tractor.

    everyone bragged abt how the john deere 1025R was so much better but the only way they can lift stuff is if they have 120lbs on the back of it and plus they have engine issues... kubota is king 😌

    They will lift more then you think. you need counter weight in the rear and it needs to exceed what youll be lifting and it will never tip. when using the loader you should remove the deck they will bind you up quickly in the rite situation.

      I mean, HP doesn’t mean much if there isn’t weight behind it. A 26hp tractor that weighs 5000lbs will do more work than a 45hp tractor that weighs 2000lbs.
