All of that plus Peter was the calm center and Dennis was the sidekick and foil to the 'hero', Peter. Peter was channeling his father, Henry, a 'leading man/traditional hero'. Dennis is your very human, colorful, but obnoxious friend, who makes you look good by comparison, which is one reason you keep him around, because you need someone who is more honest and humble than yourself.
After filming this scene, Jack Nicholson was hanging around Taos and bought a small farm near LeDoux, NM and gave it to some hippie friends of mine. It was called The Lower Farm. I read where it’s still being preserved as a cultural site.

Reminds me of the 'autonomous zone' geniuses in Seattle that laid a tarp OVER grass and soil to dump potting soil on, sticking planters in and thinking food would grow in front of their eyes. Reality sucks but you'd better face it to make sound decisions.

These are basically city kids, hippies who moved way out to the middle of nowhere where nobody would care if they were squatting and they could live as they want. Only thing is farming is not easy, especially on this land, they are trying but not doing too well. They are just saying some prayers, in their own form of spirituality. It's a movie too, Hollywood's idea of what a bunch of hippie freaks would look like...
If you lived through it, it's easier to get. Some were runaways, others from broken homes, abused or beaten, or from battled backgrounds. They were the risk takers, the hopelessly optimistic, the ones with more than their share of imagination for a different, possibly better world. They are the malcontents who think there must be a better way, than the sad status quo that just oppresses and bullies everyone,,and usually it's the talented and the tender who get bullied by the unhappy belligerent ones, who were bullied themselves and do not know a better way.
