Trying to FIX: 3D Printing Pen

  • Hi, in this video I attempt to fix a 3D pen sent in by a viewer called Lee. The nozzle part has become blocked and pulled out the wires feeding the element. Did the element fail causing the blockage, or did the blockage cause the element wires to break? Let's find out.

    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    11:47 vince I was cringing when you were bending the plastic as I knew it was going to break... here is a tip, next time heat it up with hot air for a second or 2 not too long that it melts. just enough to get it warm then it's more pliable and won't snap

    there was nothing wrong with the old heating nozzle. There should be a little white/opaque tube (PTFE tube) that needs to be pushed ALL the way down to the nozzle. What was happening was that tube had a gap between the nozzle and tube and the PLA balls up there and never stays hot enough to get down. I have fixed a few ;), also same principle as a 3d printer.

    Last thing to try maybe is to swap out the thermostat sensor from the old nozzle. The thing you was pushing back in at 8:25 ? The new sensor might be set to a lower spec/temp so throws "error" once it the pen shoves more heat through it then it can handle?

    This is exactly what I did when trying to fix my daughters 3d printer pen. In the end I ended up putting a small screw in the hot end. Because whenever you used it it would push the hot end out from the force of the stepper motor inside pushing the pla through

    An interesting video, Vince even though it wasn't fixable. I have a faulty smart light bulb if you would like to try and fix it?

    I've had that problem on my 3d printer, tried it multiple times, cleaned it and everything. The problem was just the end nozzle. For some reason even though it was clear it created some friction or similar which prohibited the filament from flowing through. You can see that the heating element is not the problem in this case since the filament gets melted in the nozzle

  • @jayarmstrong9504

  • @Jdbye
    @Jdbye 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    PLA is plant based, it's supposedly safe for home use without any specific ventilation needs, that's part of why it's so popular for 3D printing. Some others like ABS not only smell bad, but the fumes are potentially toxic, and the printer should be well ventilated and kept in a separate room from where people are. In an apartment that might be hard to do, so without PLA 3D printing would be a lot less approachable.

  • @Driv3r96
    @Driv3r96 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Vince, this video here was a bit hard to watch for us into 3D printing haha
    The reasoning was okay, but I think the issue was different. You see, sometimes plastic can bunch up right before entering the nozzle, getting a wider diameter than the nozzle entrance. This typically happens when the teflon tube inside the hotend/heating element is not inserted properly, or when something called "heat creep" happens. 3D printing pens may be more subject to heat creep due to the fact they don't have active cooling, but they are built differently to compensate. I think what happened here is just the teflon tube got pushed out a bit, so it was bulging between the nozzle entrance and the extra space between it and the tube.

  • @technixbul
    @technixbul 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You also have to swap temperature sensor (the element with thin wires that pop out when you clean the old heater) because the resistance is different. My second guess for that error is if it is a "K" sensor type, it has polarity and you just have to swap thin wires to fix the error. You'll thank me later ;)

  • @typicalpctech6674
    @typicalpctech6674 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Soldering the nozzle is the issue I believe. The nozzle melts the solder. It has to be connected in a different matter? Or maybe it's designed that way. Using the real thing at 600 degrees. Solder would never last.

  • @MBR-and-R
    @MBR-and-R 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    most likely the issue with the new nozzle is that the new nozzle is for a pen that runs on 12v , the original ones come with a 12v wall adapter where the cheap Chinese knockoffs are usb powered
