Great form and great knowledge of bunkai. People think kata is always about fighting. It is not yes movement and blocking and striking which are fighting movements. However kata is about energizing your body. Strengthening your muscles. Moving your body and working on your inner strength. All katas are about making you and your karate better strong and a better person. Karate is not about being a badass. It’s about being respectful caring honest and a solid person that can defend yourself and others. With being respectful.

I wish everyone had this kind of thoughtful understanding of karate - it's so many good things rolled into one, when taught correctly. We are a one-channel battle against the flashy stuff, but we are trying to advocate for this kind of view of karate. It's so nice that someone like you found your way to us!

Hello, Sensei. Thank you so much for a simple, and informative breakdown of some of the “ whys” of karate training. It is so very important, that understanding, I believe, , for a new student particularly, of a black belt as being more of a starting point in their karate journey. And yet, at least when I began training, an aire of “ mystic mystery “ and “ because Sensei said so” in the Dojo were more frustratingly pervasive instead . I suppose each Sensei has a line to draw as to how much “ explaining” they feel is necessary to offer or provide to brand new students. Whether it’s a value to “show” sometimes, and “tell“ other times can be a delicate balance to reach, I suppose-True? Thank you again for all that you both, and your humble channel, continue to share, and the inspiration such sharing continually provides. Take care!

Sometimes as Sensei, I want to just say "BECAUSE I SAID SO" because if someone asks another question I am going to puke blood. I was doing some self-defence scenarios, and kept getting a million what-if questions, and my nerves were somewhat shredded by the end of it.
But yes, they also need to understand the why of a move, otherwise they will just do it like a dance, and then no one is happy.
Thank you always for the lovely, lovely comments, Mark! We appreciate you so much :)

Good comments at the end. I set here with torn retinas in both eyes, joints that don't move well and other issues. What a journey. Good presentation as always!

William!!! It has been so long since we have seen you in the comments (I am behind a few weeks, I might find another one as I work through them)
What a journey you have had - we all need to take better care of ourselves and each other. It's why I keep hammering the idea of karate begins and ends with respect - it is the best way to ensure that we _all_ enjoy long martial arts journeys. So many of Ché's peers were too injured to continue - there's a whole lost generation because of the hardcore attitudes of the past and the damage it has done. I know its hard to balance, but we can still train hard without smashing ourselves and each other. I think things are changing, but as always, meaningful change is so very slow.
So nice to see your name in our comments threads again :)

I have been watching but nothing I could add would have been helpful. To paraphrase "don't text just to see your self texting"

You are so welcome! It is never too late to start - we have people who started in their 40s and 50s and got their black belts :) Thank you so much for watching and commenting, we really appreciate it 🙏

Those bunkai look great. I really like that you do combinations in the Gekisai 2 bunkai, and that you have 4 bunkai for this. We inherited just 2.
As always I really enjoy the comments put on screen as Sensei is explaining. They make me laugh - especially when Sensei Che was talking about something really seriously and I read about the dental bill.
I really like that you show high quality karate and have fun presenting it.
And now I know what next week's video is. Ha.😂. Nice teaser.

Only two bunkai? Hopefully now it is more complete :)
It was a $200 dental bill in the end for a whole implant - tooth was cracked right though and couldn't be saved! Most of Ché's teeth have fractures in them from his kumite youth - hopefully it'll be a while before another one decides to break lol.
Apologies for the appallingly late response - working through the backlog of comments now. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!

Bunkai is not about combat but about applying good structure while moving Goju-like.

Bunkai is about skills, but the way some styles are allergic to it...
