- The WA-2000 is surrounded by lore and accolades. It's in movies, it's in video games, it's frequently referred to as legendary.
However, it's also extraordinarily rare and barely made it out of the prototype stage of development. In fact it's pretty fair to say that even the produced ones are still really "prototypes".
The Germans are consistently considered masters of firearms design, and the WA-2000 falls into that paradigm but there's very little data regarding the actual performance of the WA-2000, and even less so in the field.
We aim to add some real data and testing to this ambiguity!
So, we pit the Walther 2000 against its closest counterpart - the SVD Dragunov - on the fictional Eastern Front of 1987!
How does the WA-2000 actually peform?
What is it like to fire?
How can it compare to the Soviet mass produced DMR?

I see, now, why the Walther WA-2000 is so rare--each one comes with it's own squire. Takes years to properly train one.
What, no no no, that is a ghost that simply appears to make sure the rifle stays clean!

Hey, when you're a police sniper who needs to take out a terrorist or two, you can justify having a squire!
The fanfare involved with making ready to shoot is rather epic.
It's not a squire. It's a schleper.
Do not forget the prices. The purpose of SVD was to be cheap, effective and pretty durable.
Most importantly, it was meant to be light. SVD is just under 10 pounds. WA2000 is 17.4 pounds.
It's a good rifle, I regret not buying a Civil Version back in 1991. At the time we were thinking that it would make a very very good White Tail Deer rifle. While at the time I thought the scope was a little cluttered at that time and didn't think it would be suitable for the purpose I wanted it for, big mistake on my part. It may not be as refined as some but I don't consider a Glock pistol to be a thing of beauty and refinement either and they work and work very well, I carry a Glock 19 myself. You Russians are still haunted by the Second World War and for good reason. The AK's and the SVD is the effort to provide better small arms to at least close the gape if you will for lack of a better word.
@NADS IQ youre an arrogant moron. the WA-2000 isnt a battlefield sniper rifle. its meant for police and swat teams, counter terrorist units, stuff like that. thats why the weight isnt an issue. a soldier isnt lugging this thing around a war zone all day. it sits in its case until the rare event in which the police are in a situation that they need a sniper in.

SVD is probably just as accurate if it had a good optic glass like the german glass that is best in the world

Even in videogames where you oftentimes have access to names and a radar, the battlefield is so chaotic that friendly fire isn't uncommon
@@alephkasai9384 mostly just in cqc tho. Somebody runs into you from behind a corner or vice versa and you get panic shot, or someone running into friendly's line of fire, or throwing grenades into enemies where friendlies are too/ are going there
@@TheMegaPingasMobile So I'm not a soldier and I will never claim to be, but when a handful of rounds will knock you out permanently in a game it's my first instinct to just shoot anything moving in a room when I'm clearing a building. However there has been times where I shot up an entire squad of teammates because I have no trigger discipline at all.

Whenever you see inches, you can multiply by 2.5 and be close (actual rate is +0.04)
But the target ranges are in meters, not yards

I remember finding one on gun broker for 72,000 dollars.
Justin McCoy they literally produced and sold around 250 of them. It made to to production, just not mass adoption and production.

We have an amazing budget.
It seems to me like a 50's thru modern era sporting rifle like the Remington 740, Browning BAR sporting, or Benelli R1, wearing even the most common of 3-9 hunting scopes, would simply outclass the SVD, M76, M91, PSL, etc.
@@jacobmccandles1767 In a sporting match, of course. It's why they're used. But the US SOCOM is empowered to pick whichever rifle they like and they stick to DMR's like the SCAR(before they abandoned them at least)

@@linusdn2777 well, switching safety trigger between positions in combat situation is definitely overkill. If you can not control your shooting during the fight, you probably need training, not the safety trigger.

Back around 2001 when I was beginning my firearms business, I took in trade a Russian Draganov Tiger (with the sniper scope and a complete first Gen Russian night vision scope kit) in apparently unfired condition. The retail value of the trade item was around $1800.
I advertised it all over the internet, and dragged it to probably 20-25 gun shows before finally selling the package for a bit less than the value of the trade.
I had a couple of Russian guys flip out over the night scope package at a show one day, telling me it was incredibly rare to find a complete kit in that condition. They didn’t have any money though...
The rifle was chambered for 7.62x54.
I wish I was older than 13 at that time, I'd jump on that deal in a second, inflation included🤣.

Funny the best dragonov run (12.22) was better than the best wa-2000 run(12.66). Shows how well karl is practiced with his russian dmr, and how well the wa2000 performed given the lack of practice and single stage trigger.

Russians actually do use PSG-1 in their SSO units. SVD is a mere DMR, apple to oranges

its moa is not that overly great compared to more modern semi-automatic rifles
on top of that, if you would compare the psg-1 with one of the rifles in this vid, it would be best compared with the wa2000 because both are counter-terrorist rifles.

Issues? Sure it's not the most ergonomic rifle, wasn't even at the time of adoption and there's no way you are making a railroad on top of it.
What it is however is still the most reliable and rugged 2 MOA rifle caliber firearm in 10lb weight class.

Aaron Turner the best explanation I have heard is that not knowing when the gun will go off reduces flinch from knowing that the recoil is going to come.
That WA-2000 seriously looks like one of Walthers PCP air guns, which are outstanding shooters and great for pest control.

I was gonna say because I found the the plot to be balls out crazy yet fairly plausible, but yeah she was a refreshingly different form of sultry, too.

Right? For the longest time I had a strong disliking for gun culture mostly because the closest thing I have had to exposure is people shooting RPGs at couches and "triggering liberals".
But after seeing channels like Forgotten Weapons, Inrange TV, C&Rsenal and Cap & Ball I have a great fascination in firearms and excited to get my own(which living in Hawaii, will be hell).
Serious, well made (and in this case, quite funny) content on FW and InRange has won me over, a softie from Europe! (although I've shot some weapons in the past)
Yeah, I find most American firearms media unapproachable because of their culture wars and conservative identity politics.
The skills, history and engineering approach is infinitely more interesting and informative.
Agreed, these channels i guess you could call the intelligent moderates of the youtube gun world. And i've noticed a lot of the viewers don't see the be the hardcore gun people either. Thus it's all around a lot more sensible and civilized.

Would actually be pretty cool if you could compare the Svu Dragunov (bullpup) and the WA-2000.
The comparison would be more or less the same. The SVU is used exactly like the SVD but it's shorter.
I agree, there's about ten years between the WA-2000 and the SVU so it wouldn't be Ostfront 1987, but they are both bullpup so it would be good to see a nice East vs. West comparison.
I believe SVU uses 7.62x54 and that is a NATO 7.62x51 version of WA-2000 but there's also a 7.5x55 version of the Walther which would make things more even.
In the end we are both living in a dream, SVU is a cold war premium military only rifle and getting those to the US can happen only illegally and/or with bribes.
Pekka Rastas The application of the SVU is exactly the same as the SVD. Therefore a comparison between the walther and the SVU would come to the same conclusion as the comparison in this video.
Despite the SVD and SVU being the same action, both rifles being bullpup would certainly be "more" interesting.
7.62 x39mm The practical differences between an SVU and the WA 2000 would be the same as what's described in this video.

Thanks for the intelligent discussions about firearms, which is hard to find these days, especially in print with the seeming demise of print journalism. It's easy to see how the '72 Munich terrorist incident pushed the design of the Walther -- it was their attempt to fix all the issues that came up in that debacle. Unfortunately the prohibitive price didn't help it catch on. Love to see it redone with .338 Lapua or 6.5 Creedmore and counter-balance the action for extra high-tech fast recovery after shots on target.

I've always wanted a Dragonov, they are just so cool. I actually love old Russian military guns in general, I've had a Norinco AK since 1999. I also love the modern stuff as well.

In so much as comparing similar rifles, yes. But a large part of this video is comparing and contrasting two very different rifles, even though both are "sniper rifles". As much as comparing a WRX rallycross car with a WRC rally car makes more sense as a direct comparison, you can still learn and understand certain things by comparing a WRX rallycross car with a WTCC touring car. =)

It really bothers me that SVD's are so hard to get in the US, ive always wanted one but dont have 10k dollars to blow on one.

You can get a variety of high quality semi auto DMR for under 5k, that probably perform better than the SVD and it's now semi-antiquated round...
I want to add fuel to the fire, in russia we can get hunting version of SVD under just 500$.
And military version for about ~2000$

It's also the most powerful sniper in some of the Hitman games (if I recall correctly).
It was always the sniper rifle that you could transport in a case, but not the most powerfull.
IIRC, it was just easier to conceal. Most of the snipers in game (again, IIRC) you had to carry in a briefcase and then assemble/disassemble...I seem to recall that the advantage with the WA was that you didn't have to screw around with that, which made exfil a lot easier.

The NDM-86 is Chinese made, in fact many of the parts, like the trigger group and the dust cover, have features unique only to the NDM-86 and do not share these features with any Russian made SVD rifles. The NDM-86 is known to have worse QC, especially in the 308 models, compared to their Russian counterparts. There is known problems with the NDM in 308 particularly, many were imported with excessive head-space, the 308 models tended to penetrate primers, and on the forums, people tend to find the 54R models to be more accurate.
bfgmovies Chinese ndm has 320mm barrel twsit, while most of russian svds have 240mm barrel twist.
they only penetrate primers on certain primers with a particular chemical. ie federal ammo. the 308 version is a lot more accurate than the 54r version. People say a lot of BS about these but few have actual field experience with these.
The only quality issue is the paint job on the chinese norinco dragunov for civilian market. It actually interchangeable with Russian svd parts other than the bolt being cut to fit the 54R rim cartridge. And a square 308 mag vs 54r curved mag. The pierced prime issue is only with soft federal commmerical primer as the bolt and firing pin was designed for hard military primers.
I own a 308 win NDM86 so i would know more or less. The 308 is a lot more accurate than the 54R because the mass of selections available. While the 54R is limited to surplus and few commercial loads.
Except it is actually the opposite from what you said, NDM-86s had some parts changed to improve on the original svd. The design changes such as the increased barrel twist made the gun more accurate than the original and it is evident is the controlled tests between the two. Random people on forums arent a good source for information.

same with the pdw idea, the vz. 61skorpion is, well from the 60s and pretty much a pdw, but 40 years before NATO thought about the idea

That scope is set up for the 7.6 x54mm not for the .308 win. The bullet drop and ret are all wrong for .308. The 7.62 x 54 is generally going 100 to 150fps faster than the 2550fps of the 168gr .308 win match load. The 7.62 russian or rimmed was a touch faster than even the .3006.
.308 is something middle of 7,62x39 and 7,62x54.
And Chineeze SVD have same barrel lenght as a original SVD, this is a problem.
