  • Iron Helm is a solo-play dungeon crawler in which you play as a hero in search of one last major score before finally hanging up the sword and retiring.
Join me as I play Iron Helm with the second dungeon deck, which changes up the gameplay quite a bit.

When spending a ration at the end of the dungeon level, you gain 1 Energy(this seems to be widely accepted by all on BGG though not specifically stated in the rules). What backs this up is where it says "You may spend a ration in between turns to gain 1 Energy" (Ration section appendix pg3). This would have given you additional Energy throughout the game but don't think it would have avoided the eventual defeat. Just good to know on your next play? Great playthrough, the alternate Dungeon Deck does change things up quite a bit.

I found an unopened copy of this in a used book store last month. $15. I screamed, grabbed it, and ran to the checkout 😂

Wow, that is a bargain! In those situations you gotta play it cool - spent a minute looking at it, pretending to consider your purchase and then saunter over to the counter 😉

Great find. I wouldnt have guessed that would be found in a used book shop.
I've still been kicking around buying it or not.
I have limited funds, i have to be really picky in what games i buy. That i have to invest in the games i know i will play for sure, as i cant hardly get anyone i know to play games and my friends who would now live far away Lol

6:26 It is unfortunate that Jason has chosen to use AI to do the art and then to stylize the result. It is very obvious that this was achieved via those means; it is not that his art has "improved" out of nowhere. This new blue deck, as well as new "promo" cards, is the reason why I decided against buying this game.
His previous art had the charm of an amateur and a soul; you felt passion behind it. The new art, especially when you clearly see that it was generated, speaks to you differently. The specific "quality" behind the generation contrasts with the previous art as well as with the still-amateur design of the cards, and there is a tremendous contrast-an unpleasant one. I hope that designers will acknowledge that their "amateur" art is something of value, and I hope that more buyers will see the difference between real art and a generated one.

Jason has done a video on his own channel about his thoughts on AI art; I just watched it as I was thinking about how to respond to your comment. It's pretty clear to me that he wouldn't use AI images in the way you describe.
He's one of the most distinctive designers in this little corner of the gaming hobby and his art work - which has improved steadily over time thanks to hard work (and natural talent) - is a big part of what makes his games so well loved.

@@lone_adventurer Thank you for your reply. I really appreciate that.
Let me address your point regarding his hard work first: I acknowledge that he certainly has a history of making games; that's absolutely clear. I like his videos about game design, and I think that he has his own unique vision as a tabletop game designer. It is always a pleasure to listen to his thoughts about different board game design-related topics.
I have seen the video about AI as well. In the comments to that video, he noted that he doesn't mind photobashing and using AI for that purpose. This technique is what I'm talking about: getting an AI output and painting on top of it or stylizing it. I didn't say that this is something anybody should be ashamed of; what I tried to say is that using AI changes your vision as an artist; you stop expressing yourself as a person and start reinterpreting whatever AI created for you. If you look through a "Gnome Pack" product, you will see the drastic difference with Jason's art output provided previously. That is my point: I want Jason to express himself, even if his art is amateurish. Art is subjective and intimate (if it is done by a person); that is why I adore Dungeon Degenerates or Dark Venture, for example.
A good example of how visibility helps an artist really grow is the bluebotic2327 channel. They are also an indie boardgame developer, but the visibility of the creation process is palpable-that indie developer shares all steps regarding not only how game design is developed and refactored (what Jason does as well) but also how art is being developed, from pen sketches to gouache paintings and editing in Photoshop. This is possibly a far-fetched example since that developer is a true artist, but we don't see the same transformation and "growing as an artist" from Jason. He talks about design because this is his true passion. I like that about him. What we don't see is his creation process for his new impeccable characters concept art. As an artist, you can't be caught blatantly photobashing someone's art anymore since your input may come from a unique AI generation. I'm only pointing out that photobashing upon AI output takes a creator's soul out of the product. For people with an art education, those things (at least for now) are clear. Iron Helm became popular despite art being less "professional," but because of it.
I may have been wrong in choosing my wording; English is not my native language. But I wanted to share my opinion to bring that discussion to others to contemplate. I even consider writing a letter to Jason now as well, although it seems to me that he cares about game design much more than expressing himself as an artist, which is not necessarily a bad thing either.

@@michaelpachin1157 thanks for your response - definitely a topic worth discussion and I appreciate you doing so in a measured way. I think there is a decent chance that you're right and Jason has introduced an element of digital support to the composition of his illustrations. But I'm still inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt (not that I'm neccessarily saying that approach would be in any way innappropriate) until such time that he chooses to publicly discuss the topic himself.
      Thanks for watching!

a quick tip: when you have two cards that allow you to avoid an ambush, use the one that ONLY avoids ambushes first, that way the other card can still be used for its other effect.
