The way I like to think of it is that in The Wiz, Michael is singing as the scarecrow. In this version, Michael is singing just as himself.
At 3:08, that's the part where the soul of Michael comes into you and you HAVE to get up and dance. This was played at a Philly Loves MJ dance party and I damn near got kicked out of the club for going overboard with the spins, kicks, points, etc.

Actually, this was the original. Quincy softened the sound and minimized the bass to make it more pop sounding for the soundtrack release.

see the scarecrow wasnt playing michael ,michael was playing scarecrow. this is michaels version of the song. the wiz version is much more broadway, and its just one line of vocals. in here there are multiple. also in this version hes alot more aggressive with his cadence.
