James Curnow's adaptations of classic works for younger groups have become standard literature for many directors who seek the highest quality works for their younger groups. This edition of Respighi's famous finale to the Pines Of Rome is a real gem, putting the original's power and majesty within the reach of most bands.

R.I.P. bass clarinet part. The orchestral arrangement knows you deserve better and will always be there for you.
Yesss 😢
How I feel about the horn parts..
I don’t play bass clarinet. Why is this not ideal? Is it too low?
I want to know, as I am just beginning to compose my own pieces, and I don’t want to do bad things
@@TetanicRain essentially in the original orchestra version, bass clarinet gets significantly better parts, rather than just standard quarter notes throughout the entire piece
It shouldn’t really affect your composing though
@@TetanicRainSorry I’m just seeing this now, but what the other person commented is exactly right. The orchestral part for bass clarinet is not only more melodic, but also more like a solo, as the part rarely has you playing at the same time as someone else. If it’s not a solo, like the beginning, it’s a “call and response” where you’re the only one responding (or one of few).
Changing the speed to 2 is quite comical, and what I thought the speed would be when I first played it, since it said tempo of march. Now as a trombone, I appreciate the crawling 60 bpm.
For good reason, you're thinking of traditional 1890s marches for marching bands. This refers to a war march. None of the carnival elements.
Superb chart Jim.
Needs a gong on measure 22
Really, that is the biggest thing missing? lol
YEAH OBOE SOLO IS SO FIRE
I have the solo at 1:05
I am also doing it
Me too
Man I play this on bassoon and trombone for the first part and I just went meh I like bassoon better it sounds fun
For the most part it is a nice arrangement. I just have like 3 main issues. You gave the Eng horn solo to the alto sax, just no. It doesn’t do justice to the original solo and having the oboe play it would have been fine. From m65 to almost the end, you could have had the piccolo playing the top line. I don’t think it would have hurt the balance of the band since everyone is ff. The last thing, that is missing in the upwards run into m57 for the flutes/piccolo.
the English Horn solo is too low for the oboe to play.
@@aliciadalbey1201 After looking at the solo again, to have it in the same sounding range as the Eng Horn, it would be really low. It would be a pain to the Oboe player and taking it up an octave would lose the original flavor
aww, why isn't flute important?
Flute sucks
The flutes and piccolo have more in the other movements in the band arrangement.
Mahadevan Seetharaman I realize it is the finale only got this arrangement. Even in the other transcriptions of the final movement , the flutes/piccolos really don’t do a lot compared to the other movements. The gist of those parts are similar to this arrangement.
這首曲子不只三級吧...
I play Clarinet
Lazygamer 300042 So do I.
ab._2 xs congrats

Can you do Invincible Eagle by John Philip Sousa arranged by Jay Bocook? Pretty please? 6/8 E-flat to A-flat
Having that little glock/bells part automatically cheapens even the best watered down arrangement
The part of Alto Sax is not good! There aren't grace notes (acciaccatura in italian)
I was going to mention the missing grace notes.
Where's Villa Borghese
Anyone here from DCI????
Yay! Im not the only one!
mg03214 you wish. I play the flute.
Julia Cooper what show??
erm.....sounds more like a legion of clowns....i think the standard orchestral arrangement is far better! even the brass arrangement has far more dignitas??!!
You're comparing a very difficult orchestra standard to an arrangement specifically made for middle school and high school ensembles
Way too watered down
Also rip Percussion/Alto Clarinet
Wdum
Lol this arrangement is awful please take it down for the benefit of other people
Aysar Marzuqi Listen to the original
Aysar Marzuqi This has no power
It's grade 3. Meant for middle school and lower high school.
If I was in middle school I would've loved to play this. Sure the original is better, but with the limitations of younger ensembles this kinda slaps
@@aliciadalbey1201 Man I was so ignorant back then. Yeah from my musical experience now I know what these are for and having watered down arrangements/transcriptions like these are a great way to expose the youth to really serious literature. James Curnow and all of the other people who do young band arrangements specifically for Hal Leonard are especially skilled, and I really appreciate them for all of their hard work in making literature for these types of ensembles! :)
