I went through my first breakup recently, so I decided to listen to some 2000's break up songs so I could feel my feelings and experience the actual emotions they were meant to evoke. This song was quite the surprise; I thought the upbeat tune wouldn't work well with the miserable lyrics, but I think I understand why they chose to do this. Someone in grief who listens to this obviously relates to the lyrics, which gives them a sense that they aren't the only one going through this. The instrumental part adds on many diffrent meanings, but the main theme I get from it is that it's trying to merge the sadness back into joy, but in a slow subtle way, so that it doesn't feel like a very drastic change. It could also imply that it's normal for someone who is depressed to go back and forth between emotions, and they are blended together here to also show that it's ok to feel multiple at once. This actually makes me feel a little better. :)
