Chaos Pen Blanks - Use Up All Those Cut Offs
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 9 ก.พ. 2025
- Like most pen turners, I have boxes of cut offs from past pens. I decided it was time to clean out and finally put all the great wood to use. There was a ton of gluing involved to make these blanks but I think you'll agree, they are worth it!

Bob

Very creative way of combining cut offs for some eye catching blanks. I will definitely be using this technique, thank you for sharing!
Thank you.
Maybe throw me a shout out when you do. 😀

I'll have to try this out with my scrap pieces. Awesome work
Please send a photo, I have seen some amazing blanks made this way.

@@RJBWoodTurner I just started a channel I only have 2 videos up so far. Could you give me advice on getting better shots when turning a other ideas. Thank you
I use a ladder and clamp my tri pod onto
It. That lets me hang it above the lathe. Then zoom the shot and eliminate everything that is not part of the turning.
Regards,
Bob
Oh man that's a good idea. I'll definitely give that a try. Thanks again
Great idea on how to use all those bits and pieces, and create a beautiful pens.
Thank you Clyde.

Bob
That was crazy. I love it!
Thank you.
I'm learning a LOT in watching your videos! Thanks!
Thank you.
Regards,
Bob
I like those. I especially like the fact that you cut them at such a steep angle, really gave it a great look. So many people doing chaos glue up don't use a strong enough angle, and it doesn't look that chaotic. Those really look chaotic.
All those small pleases?, just dump them in a mold and fill it up with resin.
Glad to have you back.
Thank you Barry,
I do need to get back to casting.
Regards,
Bob
Absolutely SPECTACULAR! What a wonderful and creative use for discarded 'waste'.
Thank you Bob

Very cool blanks Bob! However I have to say that I found your patience to actually create these blanks the awesome part of this project. Great work! Thanks...
Thank you Mike,
I made them over a month so it really wasn’t all that tedious.

I love your videos, I get tons of ideas.. this "CHAOS" blanks is so cool and we all have "scraps" to make the most unusual designs...keep up with the amazing vision and even better execution.

Hi Bob...wow that's an awful lot of work!! But the result is fantastic..beautiful pen..don't think that I have the patience!! ..All the best....Andy
Thank you Andy,
It’s not as bad as it seems. Set the blanks out and do glue ups between other processes, chip away at it and before you know it you’ll have some beautiful blanks.

Bob

Very nice pen
Thank you Donald.

Bob the smaller bits you could cast in clear resin making a large block then slice it up in different angles to give pen blanks like these
I kept them so I’m sure they’ll show up again sometime as a new pen blank. Good idea.
Regards,
Bob
Best idea I've seen yet for using those left overs we all have. Well done, Bob. I may have to steal this idea 😉. BTW, great seeing you at SEPG.
Thank you John,
It was great meeting you too.

Thank you so much! extremely rewarding result. I have done a few of these (in a much simpler glueup) with veneer etc,
but these, though time and glue consuming, are absolutely gorgeous!
Thank I you Ej.

I myself don't like to throw away even the smallest wood pieces 🙏.
Really appreciate for not adding to the ever increasing thrash in this world 🙏
Thank you.

Great use of scraps. :D I have so many cutoffs in my shop. Give away as much as I can, try not to throw out any.
I’m the same way. I figure I can do this maybe once a year and really clean house.
Regards,
Bob
Those look fantastic! Hope your glue joints don’t fail during turning.
I used Tight Bond II. And there glued in all sorts of directions. The ones I’ve turned have held well.
Regards,
Bob
Very nice
Thank you.

What a wonderful idea to process leftovers into a one of a kind piece of usable art! Thank you. Very inspiring. My only thought is, what if this turned into a segmented pen?
Thank you, there is so much potential and opportunity with this type of blank. It could easily be made a segmented pen.
Regards,
Bob
I'd imagine there's quite a bit of time invested in making these but certainly worth it for the result.
Thank you, they are most definitely worth it, I’m loving how they look when turned.
Regards,
Bob
Very nice very very Nice
Thank you Mark.

Bob
Thanks for the great idea.
Greetings from Germany
Thank you Rainer.

Bob
wuauu, that's increible!!! thanks
Thank you.
Regards,
Bob
Such a good idea. How long did it take to do all this, from sorting to prepping them with tubes?
LOL,
Sorting and prep took a while. Now I use whole blanks and it goes much faster.
I have a great idea for the really small pieces. Break out the pressure pot. Pick a random color epoxy, grab a random handful of the small pieces, toss those pieces in a square mold (and 8 do mean just toss them to randomize them), pour the epoxy (or resin, I'm using those terms interchangeably), pressure it up, cut up the block, and see what kind of chaos comes out.
God bless,
Matt
Thank you Matt, that is a great idea.
Regards,
Bob
Wonderful as always. Plans for jig?
Thank you April,
I don’t have any plans for the sled. It’s just a backstop on a sled set at 90 degrees to the blade.
Redress,
Bob
Hi Bob. How much do one of those pens cost. They are awesome. I'm still setting up my shop. New York weather hasn't been nice to build in. Have a great day my friend
Thank you Joel,
I quit selling pens a couple years back. Thank you for asking though.
Regards,
Bob
How much do you sell each pen .
They look amazing
$100.00
@@RJBWoodTurner thx ill show my wife for my birthday in January.
Looks great what kind of kit did you use
That was a Sierra kit.
Regards,
Bob
@@RJBWoodTurner thanks
Will you be selling any of these blanks?
Unfortunately there already spoken for. I may make another batch as cutoffs seem to be very common in my shop.
Regards,
Bob
I thought I was the only one keeping all those cut offs. Ha!
LOL, I just can’t bring myself to throw them away, I always knew I’d find a use for them.
Regards,
Bob
How much would you charge me if I sent you my box of cut off’s to do one of these? I don’t have the right tools. 😀😍
Thank you for the offer but they take way to much time to make. I will be selling eleven of them on this channel as I clear out some excess blanks. Stay tuned.
Regards,
Bob
Totally understand!
Why not cast all those little pieces in a mold and cut the up into pen blanks?
That is a possibility. I haven’t decided yet, I’m leaving my options open at he moment searching ideas.
Regards,
Bob
They are so cool! (AKA Twisted Creations by JI on insta)
Thank you Jeff.
Regards,

Great video Bob!
But sorry to say I don’t think you have a career in hand modding.
LOL, I’ve never been accused of that.
Regards,
Bob
Funny how recycling cut offs creates more cut offs... Lol
You can’t avoid that, LOL.

Bob
