      I think the main difference is that pros most usually get paid for training, thus making it their full time job, and that is not Ben and Mary's situation. But their performance is not far from professional

    Great insight. I run my easy runs to heart rate zone 2,i get an average of 8hrs+ and have 2 rest days a week and build in recovery weeks in training. I don't have a phisio a coach or experience gear though,however i do x train at home twice a week for about 40 minutes,no weights,glutes,quads and core. As far as my running goes,3 times a week, 5K tempo, fartlek session and a long run,sometimes mix in a cycle instead. Goals have always been half,marathon, full marathon,50K ultra, 50 mile,100K ultra 100 mile. Got my 50 miler in July. As far as consistency goes ive been runni g pretty much 3 days a week for nearly 6 years. I truly believe all the above has got me to where i am and where i want to go.Your video has confirmed that i have been doing the right training. You have to want to do it and i made it a lifestyle choice. Thanks Ben.😁

    As always great content Ben! You put a lot of work into these. One question I have though. If the elite runner who runs a 4:30ish minute mile in the marathon consider "easy" pace to be 7:30 or so, I would argue he is still getting a fair amount of benefit / training from it. It does take some serious effort to maintain that pace, even though it is easy for him. I would argue that let's say I run a 9 min / mile for the marathon and if I were to go out for a 12-13 minute mile "run", that I'd receive very little aerobic benefit from it, in fact to compensate for the much slower pace, my form would be drastically different, thus potentially opening myself up to weird injuries. Most guides say your easy runs should be about 90-120 seconds slower than marathon pace (so for me, 10:00 to 11:00). I am curious as to your thoughts on this. I think the rules sort of change for elites versus every day runners. I look forward to your videos and adventures and keep up the good work.

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Eddie. I don’t know the correct answer to your question, I only know my answer 😂 so I’ll give you that. Kipchoge’s average pace for his slow runs only START at that slow and end up around 2 mins per mile slower. So that actually fits in to your assessment. It’s something I meant to say and now you mention it, I realise I didn’t! So yes I’d say 2 mins slower than marathon pace is good. But I wouldn’t worry about form at a slower pace, there is so much less loading of the joints when running slower so your body can deal with difference in technique far better than if it was a different technique when running at pace. Well spotted! 😊

      @eddiegaul1903 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThisMessyHappy thanks for your response Ben. I am always trying to figure out and feel confident that I am running my easy runs easy. I have a tendency to do my hard workouts hard but my easy days at a medium pace which ruins the purpose of the easy days. I am getting better at it though.

    • @oliveuk
      @oliveuk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @adamsoft7831
    @adamsoft7831 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd argue conversational or percentage of HR are more useful as easy run metrics than nose breathing. I regularly hit over 90% of Max HR for extended periods while nose breathing. Even conversational can be misleading, when I'm on my own conversational pace feels much faster than if someone is there and I realize I really need to be going much slower. I aim for around 70-75% of Max HR and that seems to be about right for me personally. You can also go based on breathing, if I can't basically breathe normal slow in and out breaths, then I'm probably going too fast.

    suppose my marathon pace is 6, my long run should be on the basis of minus 3 minutes, at 9;
    Isn't that extremely slow and difficult?

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Eddy, it’s doesn’t necessarily work like that as some people run a marathon at a challenging pace to run a time and some people run the marathon AS the challenge so pace is not important. If you run 6 (mins per km?) and that’s in zone 2 then realistically you can do your training runs at that pace. You only need to dial it back some if you’re running a marathon pace that will push you out of zone 2. Eg, my goal marathon pace is around 4mins per km. but that’s currently low zone 3 for me. So I want my king training runs in zone 2. Hope that makes sense?

      the two most studied supplements are protein powder and creatine. Bodybuilders often use both and they can be used for running too. Unless you're trying to lose weight or build muscle you probably don't need protein powder. Creatine can be useful though as it helps the body convert ATD back into ATP which it uses for energy. Look at shredded sport science's channel for more info on creatine.
