Chris is my favorite living singer/songwriter and I have tickets to go see him in Austin in a few months, certainly wish he played Texas more often. I love that I was able to introduce Chris Smither's music to my mother a few years back. In the late '60s we lived in Boston but as moms says, she was busy raising kids and so unable to hear the 'new wave' of musicians playing The Unicorn. Smither is the one artist that'll get that old woman in a car for 200 miles to see.

In a way, Townes Van Zandt is on the same line as Franz Schubert. There's the greatest joy and the greatest sorrow in their life and work, hand in hand.
_"I come from a long line. High and low and in between, same as you. Hills of golden, piles of poison. (...) What can you leave behind when you're flying lightning fast and all alone? Only a trace, my friend. (...) All things that are alive are brothers in the soil and in the sky. And I believe it with my blood, if not my eyes. I don't know why we can't be brothers here. I know, we should be. Answers don't seem easy. And I'm wondering if they could be."_
Thank you for these precious stories, Mr Gibbs. Waving from Istanbul.

I think at one time there was a book of Townes' song lyrics. My wish has always been to have a book like that. I wish it would get re-published.

As much as I love Bob Dylan, Townes may be the greatest song writer that's ever lived. There... I said it.

It is important that all of us who were a part of the music in whatever capacity that we tell our stories somewhere and to someone. History will be written from what has been left behind in whatever format is to be found or discovered. ☘

Some people find humour in the alcoholic/drugs self-destruction of Townes Van Zandt, but not me. I only find sadness. I had a friend who was a really talented musician and songwriter who recorded an album and had a bright future, but like Townes destroyed himself and his career with alcohol. All that wasted talent just makes me sad.

you can't save people from themselves. Townes lived free, and wrote music that will live forever.

Just rewatched Without Getting Killed Or Caught. It’s free on Tubi. Kinda get the feeling hanging with Townes meant being on life saving standby. Thanks for saving him, Chris.

What a great story haha! It's amazing to hear a story about one of your heroes from one of your heroes. I Love Chris's music. I was really into Kelly Joe Phelps back in the late 90's/early 2000's, (still am) and somehow led me down a rabbit hole of music to Chris, and eventually to Townes. First song I ever heard of his was "No Love Today", and been a fan ever since. Think Listening to Kelly Joe, and Chris is what got me into that whole travis picking sound. Thanks for these stories @otisgibbs. Wonderful stuff man! All the best to you and Amy.

Love it!! Great channel, discussions and fascinating content. Same thing happened to me too. Stood up on a diving board with a drink in one hand, head hits the edge of the board and was out cold. My brother saved me though, sure as shooting!
