The F-4 is a good choise. The F-8 and the F-104 are looser's choises. The F-8 can be easily slaughtered by the nimble MiG-17 with its superior guns and the F-104G is less than a match against the MiG-21bis and against the MiG-19 too. The F-4E can deal with great success against all the Soviet fighters mentioned, but it will be severely outclassed as soon as the MiG-23 appears in the simulator. You shall have to jump into the F-14A so as to claim victories. A better solution against MiG-23 could be the Mirage-F-1. It fills the gap somehow but the MiG-23ML is still better and a higher skill than your opponent is still required. The best option would have been the AJ-37 Viggen, but Heatblur Simulations refuses obstinately to develop this alternative version of Viggen, that can make use of the excellent BVR missile Rb-71 ( , which is the British "Skyflash" made under license in Sweden ). Good stuff. Bought the Mirage today and came across your channel looking for videos on that plane. Seems like a great channel and you are relatable. You, sir, have earned a subscriber.
The Cold War server is what Squad/Post Scriptum is to first person shooters : a structured experience with teamwork, some objectives & where people are playing by the rules (mostly) without the constraints of a full on squadron (time and commitment), & where you can just spontaneously drop into and have guaranteed fun.
Into the inferno servers are pretty fun and are dynamic but only pve. They are also almost all modern plane set servers. For me what makes cold war server great is that it's a cold war plane set, there are very few of those. The missions are also well thought out for the most part and there is a great variety. It's also fun when there is an active gci.
Man this looks like a blast. I havnt done much multiplayer because Im not a fan of BVR gen 4 fighting. I love my fishbed and early Cold War stuff. I'll have to try it out
Not super hard. I mean it defintely has its quirks but coming from war birds and having some experience in gen 4 jets, the Mig-21 really bridges the gap between the two era's and it shows. The systems are pretty basic so they aren't overwhelming or overly complicated. It's quirky but straight forward, so if you stay within your win condition you will do fine.
@@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles Storm of War is the only WWII server that has pop. I really just fly IL-2 for my WWII itch. If you want to do 80s and PVE, I would recommend The Syria at War server for your F-14, it's also set in the 80s. It's a good server, it's just PVE only though.
Pretty easy, coming from warbirds should make it much easier than coming to it from the more modern jets. It's the kind of jet you can learn to fly competently in a few hours, but it takes a while to really get the hang of fighting in it.
Greg, I watch your stuff too. In fact anyone who has a powerplant question or technical stuff, I send them a link to your videos. That being said, the Mig-21 is intimidating when you first get in it. Play the training missions, and read the chucks guide, and suddenly it begins to feel like there is a method to the madness, and then it flies like a dream. anyone worried about the complex looking cockpit of the Mig-21 should know, just get in and you'll be right at home after 3-5 hours in it. (as opposed to 15-20 in the hornet, and that's not even using all the systems.) The Mig-21 is a teddy bear to learn so long as you remember that she's always trying to kill you. Finally, Greg, buy the viggen. It's your kind of airplane, trust me, I watch your stuff too.
Thanks, I'm going to have to try it, I'm still terrible in my planes, new to the game but early cold war interests me a lot. I only own the mig 19 and mig 21. I started with the 21 but find it hard to control and I can't quite land it without damaging it most of the time, or destroying it. I bought the 19 and have been enjoying it, it's a bit easier to land and control, but I'm still terrible at dogfighting, but I've only been doing it against the ai or doing air intercepts on b52s. I need to practice my bombing runs to.
I am releasing an Ace Files video that will be a MIg-19 vs F-5 fight on the cold war server. You may find that video very useful. I will be posting it on Wed. the 25th. Hitting subscribe and the bell notification will give you a notification when I post it or just hang out on my discord and you will see it when I post it.
@@Enigma89 Nice, I'll check it out, however it would be nice to have a few more fighters from the 1960s and 50s, the F-5e is from the 70s and went through a big upgrade compared to the 60s era F-5, of course the mig-19 is still a good matchup, but a few other fighters would be excellent.
A few questions; If you could only afford purchasing a module for cold war servers; • What module would that be? If instead, you could buy one module for opfor, and one for bluefor; • what modules would you get? •among the old style MIGs which one to get?
Hey, just a tip from one MiG driver to the next. In your intro you have the guncam on. It’s pretty much pointless as it just further obscures the already poor view out the front. There’s a little switch for it to the right of the radio, on the right wall. It’s on the bottom row, third from the left.
It's a good server for anyone who lives exactly in the centre of the Laobi venn diagram. The most entertainment I get from it is now and again going to the ED forum and watching them all fighting like ferrets in a sack over the issue of 'balance'
Cool server. I gave it a shot yesterday and got wiped repeatedly. Due to eyesight loss from an IED in Afghanistan I absolutely can't spot targets without dot labels. I gave it my best but just couldn't manage. It was fun listening to everyone with the human GCI though.
I don't really play PVE but I will check it out when I can. I am working on a new DCS server which will be a dynamic campaign during the cold war. For more up to date info it is on my discord but i will release a video when we release.
I'm planning for this server to be my main port of call once my stick is repaired and once I'm back up to speed. The only other gripe I have is that DCS (in my opinion) lacks Cold War aircraft, and full fidelity redfor aircraft in general. I briefly spoke with Alpenwolf in the past about why the M2000C was excluded from available aircraft, given it's a Cold War era fighter and he stated it fell down to balance. I find it encouraging that balance is a conscious concern for the server owner/mission creator and it's definitely a check mark in the win column.
It's the only interesting server that is accessible, ie it doesn't have super restrictive mechanics. You will most likely see me on there as you play on there. I try to hop in there every 1-3 days.
@@Enigma89 sticks up and running again so hopefully won't be long before I'm on there although still trying to learn the MiG-21. Learning it feels a tad up hill compared to the F-5 😂
@@Enigma89 I've found it to be fun so far, I'm just struggling with remembering the procedures. When it comes to the flight characteristics, it's definitely an interesting beast. I know it's in the far off distance but I'm looking forward to the MiG-23 (would prefer the 27) although I'd love a good striker as I tend to enjoy A2G.
As someone who recently got into War Thunder Sim I have also been looking at DCS to consider getting into. Any idea how the servers you mentioned compare to Enduring Confrontation in War Thunder? I am not talking about flight models before anyone jumps into that, I am talking about the gameplay itself. In War Thunder you earn points against the other team by killing enemy fighters, destroying bombers and surveillance aircraft, bombing bases, capturing grid zones, supporting ground attacks with ground strike aircraft and things like that. Whenever I looked into what DCS had recently it seemed to amount to team death match, PvE missions or create your own PvE missions. This is the first I have heard of anything that resembles asymmetric warfare or dynamic multiplayer beyond team death match.
For what you described, Cold War, Blueflag and RSR will be the servers you will enjoy the most. Keep in mind that the UI and how progress of the overall effort is less streamlined than it is in War Thunder. With that said, once you start to get past the bad UI and understand better then yes, you can take part into a larger effort if you want to focus on the ground objectives. Are people going to be into the objectives, that will vary. Even focusing around and attacking the EWR systems/stations has a profound impact on the effort but the UI does not a good job of messaging that so your impact isn't obviously felt like it is in war thunder when you see an objective point change hands in a pretty UI. If you want a super objective orientated server for flight sims, I would recommend Finnish server in IL-2, this video goes into detail about it. th-cam.com/video/DqU4YZUG15s/w-d-xo.html I think the UI is much better in IL2 and it messages the impact of what you are doing in a better way. DCS is possible though but not 24/7 like it is in IL-2 with the Finnish server.
It is the best server by a Swedish mile imho. A plethera of missions and at its best when there's air combat/CAS backed up by a human GCI, co-ordinated ground war & helicopter operations with maximum use of SRS nothing else touches it much credit to Alpenwolf.
If you want a nice campaing full pvp server, i strongly recomend DDCS server, its a conquest server, where everything its player built, you see a column of tanks? They had been slinged by players and are being driven by players, sams? They are players, awacs? Start grinding resources to spawn one, same for ground units, you have human CIG lots of team work and very dynamic scenarios, captured a base? Time to sling troops tanks and sams to defend it Like in all servers everything its "set" in the same place, nice lines to shot at, with no mobility, in DDCS because everything its human driven, its so variable, you could have a thunguska or atingers huding in a mountain not firing at you untill they are sure you cant see them, and with no kill messages, you need to set a hunting team to look for what is out there and where So basically a dynamic ful pvp resources driven server that i think you will enjoy
I have heard about DDCS but I have personally avoided it. I want to try it out but I have heard so many bad things about the server owner that it has made me nervous to try it. Not making this to spread hate, I have never witnessed it personally but have heard it from several different people and communities so I just accepted it as a fact. With that said, I will check it out to see what it is like, thank you for the thoughtful and thorough response.
On one hand it is a bit frustrating he doesnt change things up too much. On the other hand, he is the only one maintaining a cool cold war server so I find it hard to complain. Either way i do wish we had some more variety in the planes.
shame that it is centric to f-5 and mig 21. i don't have either module and cold war should still cover f-16 and f-14a (i have both). honestly i'd rather wait for the f-4 phantom module to come out and get that before the f-5, and it should definetly be in the cold war list. (granted this is a year old vid and f-4 was announced a few months ago. I guess the restrictions on the f-14a would mean no phoenixes as it's a fox 3 boat.
I have, I have done some videos on it before, you can check the channel here to see them. I think it's an interesting foundation but I wish there was more to do/fly. I think what the SOW admins are doing is commendable and they are doing the best they can but they are given so little from ED in terms of WWII stuff.
hello nice job i'm a little bit surprise by the list of authorized aircraft like the su25T, I have booth su25 & 25T but think that the 25T is not allowed, you confirm ?
It is fun, def check it out. I am not part of the server staff so please know my comments are truly coming a neutral source. I just like playing on servers where there are interesting fights. The population has been good lately.
How the hell can you put "Cold Start" into a "-" ? What's the problem? One minute startup procedure? It's not a Warthunder. Also which one Blueflag do you mean? '60? '80? modern? You put in "-" many things that are especially welcomed by many players - Side locking gives you a feel of playing a campaign - you're dedicated to one side, you make a career there (til the end of campaign at least) - A2G missions have actually sense since they results have impact for whole campaign. In pure Dogfight mission is practically irrelevant what happens on the map. - BF Modern is most populated in DCS but MiG21 is there just a flying tgt. - BF '80 moderate but very difficult for MiG21 - BF '60 low population but there's constant number of players, and there's a place for A2A and A2G pilots on both sides. MiG21 and F5 are top fighters there. Current campaign takes already 2 weeks (however blue side is loosing badly, and seems the end may come in 24 hours to 7 days..) also... Cold War (the dogfight one not the BF) is pure Dogfight. Ground operations are there, but after 4 hours server restarts and all results of hard work goes to trash. I don't understand your point. Sorry. I miss a proper pro online mp campaign, with full weather conditions (not only clouds, but turbulence, wind, and wake turb.) Cold-war or Vietnam -war style.
Because it's fun & Fuck does the lobbing shit 30nm out gets boring. You know it's bad after a full 2 hours long sortie, the most excitement you get is you're jive ass Carrier trap because the weather is a bit shitty. One thing, I would like is for more people to get SRS & wait a extra minute to have a wingman, Makes everyone life so much better.

as a mudmover I really like that server, because I can mind my own business plinking tanks alot of the time.
I cant wait to fly the A-6 and the A-7 there
Years back used to play cold war servers on flaming cliffs 2 it was a lot of fun
Server has had good pop lately, still a lot of fun
Good stuff. Bought the Mirage today and came across your channel looking for videos on that plane. Seems like a great channel and you are relatable. You, sir, have earned a subscriber.
Great! Glad to hear that and that you are vibing with the content. Please let me know if you have any requests, can't fill them all out but can try.
@@Enigma89 No requests but one, keep up the the good work
The Cold War server is what Squad/Post Scriptum is to first person shooters : a structured experience with teamwork, some objectives & where people are playing by the rules (mostly) without the constraints of a full on squadron (time and commitment), & where you can just spontaneously drop into and have guaranteed fun.
I'll have to try it out
It's a very good change of pace for DCS. Kills feel much more satisfying when you have to maneuver to kill them.
How hard was it to learn the Mig 21?
Not super hard. I mean it defintely has its quirks but coming from war birds and having some experience in gen 4 jets, the Mig-21 really bridges the gap between the two era's and it shows. The systems are pretty basic so they aren't overwhelming or overly complicated. It's quirky but straight forward, so if you stay within your win condition you will do fine.
@@Enigma89 I may try it. So far on DCS I have the Dora and the Tomcat. I haven't flown online yet. Do you know a decent WW2 server?
Great...as a fan of the f-5, I will try this server out!
Yeah this server is tailor made for you then. Please consider subscribing if you like the videos and dont mind my affinity to migs 😅
@@Enigma89 Subbed
ive been having a blast on your server, sadly team blue has been penned in for a while
Thanks, I'm going to have to try it, I'm still terrible in my planes, new to the game but early cold war interests me a lot.
A few questions;
If you could only afford purchasing a module for cold war servers;
• What module would that be?
If instead, you could buy one module for opfor, and one for bluefor;
• what modules would you get?
•among the old style MIGs which one to get?
MiG-21 for all answers.
Viggen for the blue specific answer.
@@Enigma89 thanks a lot ;)
DCS spotting is definitely a problem. I hope they find a way to improve it someday.
Yeah for real, it's something that is annoying. I do like Cold War but I wish they had maps that were clearer so it would be easier to see guys.
@@Enigma89 I use VR, and it's even worse.
@@Void304 F
It is easier for me to spot in DCS than in IL2, idk why but that is why I play warbirds in dcs now
Hey, just a tip from one MiG driver to the next. In your intro you have the guncam on. It’s pretty much pointless as it just further obscures the already poor view out the front. There’s a little switch for it to the right of the radio, on the right wall. It’s on the bottom row, third from the left.
Thx you my mig brother
It's a good server for anyone who lives exactly in the centre of the Laobi venn diagram. The most entertainment I get from it is now and again going to the ED forum and watching them all fighting like ferrets in a sack over the issue of 'balance'
Lol! No ne else got that?........Cnuts
My first time in the server was just me in a MiG-21 and a Tomcat flying around my airfield...Wasn't fun. I hope I can get in when it's a better mix.
Was this the map on the marianas?
Cool server. I gave it a shot yesterday and got wiped repeatedly. Due to eyesight loss from an IED in Afghanistan I absolutely can't spot targets without dot labels. I gave it my best but just couldn't manage. It was fun listening to everyone with the human GCI though.
I am sorry to hear that.
You should try XSAF! It's PVE but with a hugely improved goals based AI
@@FreeFragUK It's very squirly. At this point I prefer flying the Mig-19.
@@FreeFragUK Just remember the Mig-21 has a delta wing. You can use your wing as an airbrake for better or worst when you yank the stick.
2:35 Bf 109? I thought that aircraft were obsolete before the start of the Cold War.
a glistening slow burn gemerald
Sounds sorta similar to the storm of war ww2 server too
Sooo, how do F-5 navigate on the server now with the TACAN now COMPLETELY porked?! XD
It is the best server by a Swedish mile imho. A plethera of missions and at its best when there's air combat/CAS backed up by a human GCI, co-ordinated ground war & helicopter operations with maximum use of SRS nothing else touches it much credit to Alpenwolf.
How long is a swedish mile? 🤠
Time to sling troops tanks and sams to defend it
Like in all servers everything its "set" in the same place, nice lines to shot at, with no mobility, in DDCS because everything its human driven, its so variable, you could have a thunguska or atingers huding in a mountain not firing at you untill they are sure you cant see them, and with no kill messages, you need to set a hunting team to look for what is out there and where
So basically a dynamic ful pvp resources driven server that i think you will enjoy
Interesting the M2000C is not on the server, it's falls within that timeline. Fox 1 and 2 like the MiG-21.
I’ve had and lost that argument with Alpenwolf , he can be on crack sometimes with his thinking
Have you ever played the Storm of War server on dcs? It's ww2 with good population.
I have, I have done some videos on it before, you can check the channel here to see them. I think it's an interesting foundation but I wish there was more to do/fly. I think what the SOW admins are doing is commendable and they are doing the best they can but they are given so little from ED in terms of WWII stuff.
Sad A-4 Skyhawk noises
Love the cold war server, but the 104th Phoenix is my MP home
What's the server like?
hello nice job i'm a little bit surprise by the list of authorized aircraft like the su25T, I have booth su25 & 25T but think that the 25T is not allowed, you confirm ?
Only the Su-25 is allowed not the Su-25T
Needs to add the a4e
which plane should i buy? i have never flown cold war.
Here you go th-cam.com/video/gkCrGf74UFg/w-d-xo.html
Not sure but it's pretty unbalanced since the red side has all the plug&play jets
Can you define plug and play?
Looks fun
It is fun, def check it out. I am not part of the server staff so please know my comments are truly coming a neutral source. I just like playing on servers where there are interesting fights. The population has been good lately.
I fly it and I love it
How the hell can you put "Cold Start" into a "-" ? What's the problem? One minute startup procedure? It's not a Warthunder. Also which one Blueflag do you mean? '60? '80? modern? You put in "-" many things that are especially welcomed by many players
- Side locking gives you a feel of playing a campaign - you're dedicated to one side, you make a career there (til the end of campaign at least)
- A2G missions have actually sense since they results have impact for whole campaign. In pure Dogfight mission is practically irrelevant what happens on the map.
- BF Modern is most populated in DCS but MiG21 is there just a flying tgt.
- BF '80 moderate but very difficult for MiG21
- BF '60 low population but there's constant number of players, and there's a place for A2A and A2G pilots on both sides. MiG21 and F5 are top fighters there. Current campaign takes already 2 weeks (however blue side is loosing badly, and seems the end may come in 24 hours to 7 days..)
also...
I WISH that this server can run More on caucasus because its free map so that means More players like me that dont have syria
So i would say +10 players playing the server
@@onnipatri3810 It's an interesting point. Wish DCS made the maps all free :[
@@Enigma89 yea why do they even cost so much:(
Syrian disco? 🕺 Talk about deep tracks.
I would use music from north korea if it slaps 🎵
Is the loadout restricted ?
This cold war server is different from my own. This is alpens server he has different restrictions per map
You really like to zoom randomly don't you
It's a habit
Because it's fun & Fuck does the lobbing shit 30nm out gets boring.
You know it's bad after a full 2 hours long sortie, the most excitement you get is you're jive ass Carrier trap because the weather is a bit shitty.
One thing, I would like is for more people to get SRS & wait a extra minute to have a wingman, Makes everyone life so much better.
excellently done with a Russian plane
Thanks!
Nope - I didn't enjoy the music.
