This is a very detailed account of Ed Shames endeavor. I know this place like the back of my hand. I spend two nights bivouacking in front of the foot bridge. The map helps to comprehend the very confusing geographical structure of this area, counting 4 rivers, two locks and one canal. The drone view helps also a lot. The bridges emplacement are a bit difficult to find, look for the lane on the right, in Pénème, after the Fortin farm, a quite extensive farm now (not sign for the farm or the bridge). You can still find remnants of the foot bridge and the sunken ferry. The Taute farm, near the foot bridge doesn't exist anymore. I couldn't locate any ruins either. Further upstream, you can find the concrete pier of the road bridge.
I find only one slip of the tongue regarding the Bloody Gully battle. The 17th SS motorized division attacked with elements of the 6th Fallschirmjäger regiment of colonel Von der Heydte, not the 6th panzer division (currently, on the eastern front at that time). those events are thoroughly narrated in two books. The most detailed is from Ian Gardner(numerous maps and prewar pictures of the area), definitely worth reading.

If you were the Fortin farm side of the canal you were lucky not to have been thrown off. The farmers there don’t like people roaming around. « what’s mine is mine » That’s one reason I used the drone.
I got that great book by Ian Gardner. Most if this info came from his book on Ed shames.
You’re right about the 6th pz. I’m sure I saw that in a document while I was researching. Should have rung alarm bells.

@@WalkingDday I managed to camp two nights in front of the former foot bridge without any problem. I 'm used to settle my bivouac at dawn. I don't light a fire and take away my garbage. Being French and a cyclist helps also a lot regarding relations with farmers . I also camped twice on WN 60, the best location overlooking Omaha Beach. The farmer came early in the morning, during my breakfast and just gave me a nod. I also settled twice in Timmes' orchard near Amfreville without any problem.

I know what you mean. I love the attitude of the French. I park all over these places over night, sometimes longer in a big van and I have never had any problems with French farmers and and locals in general. As you say, the French are very cycle orientated and I own I bike shop with my company logo plastered all over. So this may help. I camped in that little lane next to wn 60 for a couple of days more than once (it’s a beautiful sheltered little spot) and as you also pointed out..... leave no rubbish. In fact having the room I have I often clear up cans and bottles left by others. I feel it’s the least I can do. I haven’t a bad word to say about The French and I visit France 3-4 times a year because of this. Vive la France. 🇫🇷

No, the 2nd armoured was landing on Omaha beach. Bradley ordered them to get to Carentan ASOP.
