Hello! This is indeed the arrangement of an old traditional Russian gipsy song called "Friendship" ('Druzhba') which has been performed in a lot of different forms throughout the 19th century: female voices, males voices, family choir, instrumental (generally violin, guitar and clarinet, occasionnally cymbalum). It was still very popular in the 20th century. The last time I heard it live, it was in 2004, in a street of St-Petersburg, sung a capella by an old lady who still had a powerful voice. It is still enjoyable in the ragtime style though! And quite well played too...
Großartiger Gitarrenspieler und Sergei Rudnev ist ebenso ein großartiger Komponist. Danke für die Künstlerische Darbietung.Sie hat mir sehr unterhalten.
I listened to this every day for the last 8 years or so, and today i have finally finished learning it. I've listened to it so much that i commonly play the F# that is supposed to be an F (2:33) by mistake
I notice the poster's website is in Germany, so he probably doesn't understand the syntax of the English language, and did not mean to label it as ragtime music. Hi, Stefan! Try re-titling the post: "Best version ever! Ragtime by Sergei Rudnev, played by Stefan Schmitz." Beautifully played. Thank you for posting this. I'm going to be listening to it over and over.
Ragtime is a type of piano style, although occasionally played by other instruments this doesn't sound like ragtime to me xD although its still a great tune
+rumi al-afghani ragtime is a genre of music which is characterised by its syncopated, or "ragged", rhythm. This piece has that ragtime rhythm. The difference between this one and other popular rags---such as Maple Leaf Rag---is that this in a minor scale, and doesn't have too many of those common 3 note loops we see in rags by Scott Joplin.
ahh i see, i was beginning to think i might just have a slightly narrow view on ragtime as i have only realy every played or listened to Scot Joplin and zez confrey in terms of ragtime.
I think ragtime wasn't just the kind of melodic business Joplin and other Americans used, but rather music that had an impovisational character, and where it might just take off in another direction all together before coming back to the theme. This does that but with more European (and gypsy) melodies. So it mostly qualifies as ragtime. But as we all know, all categories of music are attempts at using language labels on musical forms, and it fails at some point especially when the music is a hybrid of cultures, styles, and technique. Someone said; "It is a useful to talk about music as it is to dance about architecture".
you are a really good guitarist with a lot of temperament! I like you playing very much! And this piece is very beautiful, too! Thnak you for sharing with us!
Wow! Wow! Wow! Stefan! I watch your TH-cam videos a lot! This one is so good! I have watched it at least 5 times and I will probably watch it 50 more times- it is so good! You are amazing! Love it! Although, La Paloma and Rosita are still my favourites- I love Tarrega! Thank you for all the hard work you put into your music - it is truly inspirational!
This is high class guitar playing! Both the inventive composition as the virtuoso interpretation deserve the utmost admiration! The primary melody is very Russian, the variations and ornaments a mix of gipsy jazz, ragtime, flamenco and blues... So nice!
After browsing youtube I can say this is my favorite performance of this piece. You do phenomenal work with those bass notes and overall clarity, as I learn it I will use your interpretation for a guide. Thanks for uploading it PS: to all those complaining about it not being ragtime, thats the name of the song, composed by Serge Rudnev.
@ I meant the author of a piece for guitar. You are right: the musical basis of this arrangement is the song "Friendship". There is controversy regarding her authorship. According to the most common version, the composer is Paul Marcel (Pavel Rusakov), the author of the text is Andrei Shmulyan.
@@denmanwarren2696 Por supuesto que lo he escuchado; Richard es mi favorito Ragtime guitar player 😀. The cascades ejecutada por él es sublime. Coincido contigo.
@@pedro290860 Gracias Pedro. estoy contento que puedes entender lo que he dicho, porque solo hablo un poquito de Espanol. Richard Smith el numero uno de Ragtime!
Actually blame Segei Rudnev if it isn't real ragtime- he named the piece Ragtime - even if isn't true ragtime it is still an amazing piece! FYI the strings are NYLON and 3 lower tones have bronze wire winding and will squeak!
The intro is yours? Have I notice some influence from brazilian guitar? Namely Choro? Dilermando Maybe?Baden crossed my mind also. Congratulations by the wway!
You obviously know what you're talking about! He has his left hand in the "violin position"...the only way to play a string instrument. Bass players, Viola etc..They all do it to have control over the instrument."PUSH OUT THAT WRIST! Yes... I know it hurts!" Dangling a rock guitar from a long leather strap from the neck, below the knees and below the level of the baggie arsed jeans, puts the untrained left hand into a position where it can do nothing sensible and don't they prove the theory!! AND I'm only a low life jazz sax-player with guitar as a second love!. Wife is well down the list!
Stefan Schmitz appreciate a lot!!!!! superb!!!!!!! and zillions of thanks for the immediate response! and I have never mentioned that the piece and your interpretation are just orgasmic!
INCORRECT CAPTION: While this syncopated guitar piece is lovely, it is NOT RAGTIME. Ragtime is DANCE MUSIC, and this piece changes tempo, persuading dancers to fire the guitarist, hence is NOT DANCE MUSIC, hence is NOT RAGTIME.
I did not know that! And I've played both types of guitars (but not in a long time). Several months ago, I provided a comment to a Tommy Emmanuel TH-cam video: "I guess squeaking the strings is unavoidable." One responder said, yeah, essentially it is.
You know, I've heard others say the same thing! To me, the squeaking is a big distraction. But far be it from me to suggests to others what musical sounds are enjoyable and which ones are not.
It's a classical guitar with plastic strings... therefore the sound doesnt happen. Are you stupid or just to lazy to google something? I really wish morons like you didnt have access to computers, or air for that matter.
Andrue Stafford From this point forward, I will stop breathing. Thanks for the tip! Can I call on your expertise for other subjects? On what other subjects is your knowledge infinite?

Браво маэстро - блестящая игра! Вы один из лучших гитаристов.....
One of the best acoustic guitar players in existence.
No disrespect, the guy is good....but John Williams would take this guy to school! Michael Chapdelaine would also school this man.
@@jeff7767 ...and John James for the ragtime .
Very very nice tune, and very well played, but i would not could this a Ragtime piece
Not ragtime. Definite eastern european influences like Django mixed with some Spanish classical. Very accomplished and nice to listen to
and defenite some Scott Joplin influence also!!!
I thought Django right away too... The ontly thing hinting any ragtime would be the rhythm which even then is still changing a lot.
The composer Sergei Rudnev from Russia called this piece Ragtime. It is based on an old russian folksong called "friendship".
Ragtime as heck. Walking bass, alternate bass, extremely ragtime. Not American ragtime.
What's missing is the syncopation
This guy is incredible.
Not ragtime but absolutely amazing!! Hope one day I can play like that
Do you?
Man that guy is like "one with the guitar". Great Job!
What a great way to describe it (and him!)
Mind = Blown

Chord progression and scale is definitely ragtime. Love the bossa/flamenco-esque flares in there too. Going to purchase some of your music now.
Großartig!
Well it's certainly not ragtime so i'd change that title to what it is; incredibly well-played gypsy jazzy guitar.
Whenever I see a guitarist like this, it makes me feel like a charlatan. This is a real musician!
Yes, he's a fine player for sure!

It gets more ragtime in the second half, starting around bar 80 or so.
It's like a mixture of classical guitar and ragtime

not ragtime but very nice playing nonetheless

Whatever he does to avoid the squeaking sound made by running one's fingers along the strings, he needs to teach that to other acoustic guitarists.
