    Hello Dereck,
To fully understand this song and the enthusiasm it generated, you have to put it in the context of its time and its release date.
Indeed this title of Edith Piaf was released in 1946. That's to say not even a year after the end of the W.W.2.
Paris and France had just been freed from the yoke of German occupation.
This title *La Vie En Rose* then became synonymous with emancipation in the country.
French people finally found all the youth and the soldiers who had been forcibly taken prisoner and enlisted in the *Service du Travail Obligatoire* (S.T.O.) in Germany established by the occupier.
Women, therefore, found their husbands or their fiancés, fathers, and mothers found their children, etc.
The French of the time made it the hymn of this freedom finally found ...
    Peace friends,

"Kids. I must've heard your mom's rendition of 'La Vie En Rose' a million times over the years, every night when she tucked you in, for instance. But that performance, that first night I ever heard her sing, that one will always be my favorite." HIMYM

"Ne me quitte pas" is not a love song.
Try to find his interview with Brassens and Ferré, where he explains the meaning.
It's more about men who don't respect themselves, trying to get/keep a woman, and act like a carpet, a slave, a dog (or even shadow of a dog, as the lyrics say) or spend lot of money...

My 85 year old mum is always singing the German versions lyrics that are as famous as the original ones. She knows La vie en rose and Schau mich Bitte nicht so an (please don’t look at Me that way). Edith gave the world so many classic melodies that the list endless. It’s essential music to know in life. The 1977 Grace Jones versions is brilliant.

    Eyes that gaze into mine,
A smile that is lost on his lips-
    That is the unretouched portrait
Of the man to whom I belong.
When he takes me in his arms
    And speaks softly to me,
I see life in rosy hues.
He tells me words of love,
    Words of every day,
And in them I become something.
    He has entered my heart,
    A part of happiness
    Whereof I understand the reason.
It’s he for me and I for him, throughout life,
He has told me, he has sworn to me, for life.
And from the things that I sense,
Now I can feel within me
    My heart that beats.
    In endless nights of love,
A great delight that comes about,
The pains and bothers are banished,
Happy, happy to die of love.
When he takes me in his arms
    And speaks softly to me,
I see life in rosy hues.
He tells me words of love,
    Words of every day,
And in them I become something.
    He has entered my heart,
    A part of happiness
    Whereof I understand the reason.
It’s he for me and I for him, throughout life,
