Fun synth that one. Interesting that envelope followers were still included up until the SH-101 where they disappeared never to return. A really handy feature.
@@ewanstefani Yeah, I guess it was seen as a guitar feature but it's totally open ended. Drum machine to modulate the filter? Yes please! Surprised it wasn't used more and wound up cast aside. One of my favourite features of the ARP 2600 is the envelope follower.
@@AlexBallMusic I stuck a Yamaha MR10 thru it in the Patreon version of this vid! Before I had a sequencer the env follower was my route to bass lines that were in time!
One of the first analogue synths I ever tried. My music teacher had it. The bender handle had broken off, but it worked okay anyway. The oscillator was a bit flaky, though.
I'd love an sh2. I dunno if they could capture the true vintage sound tho. Vintage synths are just so sloppy and unpredictable in a musical way. A happy accident of old components and aging.
Sadly why behringer is so prevalent these days- they're one of the only companies who can still make their own silicon, which was vital for lots of these synths. Behringer actually supplies chips to dozens of other music/synth brands, believe it or not
For all the new tech that Roland has been building and coding its synths like this that they should be making again just with more modern connections and stability no one would care about the next generation of new synthesizers or cloud engine’s.👽
If only Roland would do what Korg has done : Faithful reissues of some of these classic synths. The original SH series of synths had such a great overall sound, everything they released after became more clinical, less characterful, less capable of producing unpredictable but pleasing results by pushing it to the limits. Such a shame.
@@roundandwoundtapetransfers9054 really do they still sell stuff well, some of their Digital Pianos are very good but A lot of their new stuff looks cheap and plasticky, the last exciting release was the V-Synth GT which was 2007, that’s in 14 years
this is why vintage synths are amazing.

Capturing the guitar + synth market didn't really work for 70s synths. By the 80s they'd given up; nearly.. OK Roland kept the dream alive ;)

@@BOOelectric Ah cool! I did the same with the RS-505 that has external filter mod, but no CV/gate. 🙂
This is super impressive for just one oscillator!
What a gorgeous sound, reminds of Tomita so much! Love it :)
Yes you’re right there
Quite a chilled vibe, rounded even when metallic. Nice.
I Had Two Of These Back In 1979 Till About 1983 Then I Had SH-2 Wow That Was Something Else
More of this please! Shortest five minutes of my life.
Sounds great, have never even seen one in real life. Owned an SH-09, which also has surprisingly broad sonic capabilities for a single osc synth.
Nice demo of great sounds out of this vintage Roland gear. We need a Roland SH-02A boutique (SH-2) with at least 4 voice poly. Come on Roland!
My first synth. PHAT! Great range of sounds for such a simple synth.
FB is down and Sonic State is up and keeping us HIGH thx :)

My first synth! 😀 Retired almost 25 years ago, it still lives inside a suitcase here. A great instrument to learn the basics of electronic music.
I had one for several years. Great Synth, sounds so much better than sh101
Brilliant sounds
Lovely vibe although the reverb elevates it somewhat. Great video.
Wow such an amazing demo!!
Wow. Some amazing sounds can be coaxed out of it.
the synth used on "Don't Change" by INXS
Digital emulations get 98% of the way there, but there's something about a physical synth that is just so amazing.
I wish i had one! 4:23 sounds lovely
lovely job
sh1 3 and 5 are excellent sounding designs, like the early MicroKorg series of the same era
our band in 1982 had an sh-09....
dear behringer 2022 sh-09, sh-2 sh-1 or sh-1000 please.
I'd love an sh2. I dunno if they could capture the true vintage sound tho. Vintage synths are just so sloppy and unpredictable in a musical way. A happy accident of old components and aging.
Deffo, the SH-2! It's like a souped-up 2 oscillator version of the SH-101, fkin' brilliant wee synth.
Extraordinary sounds from a one oscillator synth. rich, full, alive and varied! Great demo
Thought you were going to do Acid Rain by Lorn in the first couple of seconds...... nice vintage sounds.
Flock of Seagulls used it, I think. Surprised at similarity of layout with the BS-2.
Still regret not grabbing one for 300 bucks at a Guitar Center like 13 years ago. Have had an SH-01a since they came out but it's just not the same.
2:28: Elephant talk!
that's the right entertainment during the Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp shutdown ;) thanks SonicState :)
Every day should be a Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp shutdown ;)

It is for me. I have a pintrest though I like to build stuff.

Man, those mid to late 70s Rolands and Korgs have a real growl that's lacking in the later models.
superb.
Awesome beast! 👌
The mean space machine!
Surprised you can even use your hand with your wedding ring so tight
Awesome‼️👌

Wow, this is quite a sound - I really like this new Roland synthesizer
It's not new, I don’t think
@@keyshialee1585 yes it’s very new. Coming out NAMM 2022
unfortunately, few synths seem to have that kind of mojo nowadays

Yay BOO!

Beautiful :)
How do get it to sequence? Cant see any hold note function on it?
@@Laytonstruggle keen to know this as well !

Similar to my SH 7
How come Roland were giants 1972-1986 and now they make cheap tinny sounding and poorly moulded plastic digital synthesizers?
They weren't really successful until 1982 or so, but they found that cheaper $ells better

Yes they suck now except for the boutique jx 08 and se 01
So fat and musical. The SH-1 is a monster.
